US actor Karl Malden, best known for his roles in films such as A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront, has died at the age of 97.

He was also famous for playing Lt Mike Stone in the long-running TV series, The Streets of San Francisco.

Malden won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1951, for his performance in A Streetcar Named Desire, and was nominated again in 1954.

Malden, who died at home, had been in poor health for several years.

His family said he had died of natural causes.

The only time I ever heard of him at all is on a Family Guy episode where Peter regrets sharing cocaine with him (evidently because of his big nose). :rip:

Gosh it makes me feel old every time an older actor dies and posters say "I never heard of him or her." :toofless:

Karl Malden wasn't usually a lead actor, but he was an excellent supporting actor. RiP Karl Malden.

Great, great actor. I watched the Streets of San Fran once in awhile, but I've seen many of the movies he'd starred in.

He led a long and, hopefully good life. Shame he's getting lost in the midst of Michael, Farrah, Ed McMahon.

The big question should be ... Did he leave home without it?
