Ill. sheriff: Graves dug up to resell plots

ALSIP, Ill. – Workers at a historic Illinois cemetery may have dug up more than 100 bodies and dumped them in mass graves at the back of the 150-acre property in a scheme to resell plots to unsuspecting customers, authorities said Wednesday.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said his office was questioning five employees from Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, about 20 miles southwest of Chicago. But no charges were announced and investigators were working to determine how many plots may have been resold.

The sheriff's investigation began six weeks ago when the cemetery's owner reported that an employee who began feeling guilty revealed what allegedly had been going on, possibly for as long as four years, Dart said.

:gagged:All I'm going to say is that I hope they'll be haunted badly for the rest of their lives.

Or longer if I can arrange it.

What strikes me about this example of entrepreneurial initiative, is that it's very much like what was done that led to the current economic meltdown. You keep selling what really has no value, to people who don't know any better, until someone gets wind of it.

ALSIP, Illinois (CNN) -- A Cook County cemetery where hundreds of graves were dug up and allegedly resold has been declared a crime scene, meaning that relatives of people believed buried there will not be allowed to visit for several days, an official said Friday.

"It would be the height of irresponsibility for me to invite people in, to raise expectations and then crash them," Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart told reporters in a news conference held at Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip, Illinois. He pleaded for patience, saying he hoped to reopen the 150-acre cemetery to the public in five to seven days.

Dart said the scope of the investigation has broadened to include "Babyland," a section of the cemetery intended for children.

"A lot of women came up to me and asked for help with Babyland," he said. "To a person, every one I talked to could not find any of their children in Babyland."

A large number of grave sites "are completely missing," he said, adding that he had received more than 5,000 telephone inquiries and 1,700 e-mails about the matter since the investigation began.

Never heard of anyone trying this scheme before. Pretty sick people.

The funeral home industry is pretty bloody crooked. Another big business lobby.

just think, here in IL, cemeteries are generally "owned" or controlled by city/county/state governments too (unless of course its on church grounds).
so dig in deeper and think about the story some more....
and keep in mind "everyone" wanted an illinois politician as president....
its only gonna get worse....

Somehow, I knew somebody will try to link this to Obama.

According to this article (http://cbs2chicago.com/investigations/Burr.Oak.regulation.2.1079737.html), it's because there isn't a lot of regulations governing cemeteries but this cemetery is controlled by Burr Oak, which has the license (http://cbs2chicago.com/local/dan.hynes.burr.2.1080746.html) to run it.

yep.
and yep.

the first article and the lack of regulations on cemeteries, as i stated in my first post, is because most of them are in fact owned by the city/county/state governments....

the second article didnt actually say much. all the "revoking license" is doing, is shutting it down for now for any further use. didnt you find it a bit fishy that the article and the investigators didnt actually say who owned burr oak cemetery!??

not to mention this statement made by the investigator himself....

As a result, Hynes said his office can only audit cemetery care trust funds. Auditors were at Burr Oak at least eight times in the last four years. That's when employees were allegedly disinterring bodies and reselling graves.

the true story is family members of the dead buried there caught on to what was going on when they were returning anually to visit the graves of their dead family members and called them out on it..... now their just trying to cover it up with a chocolate covered lolly pop investigation to shut em all up.....

god bless illinois.....

Actually, not quite. Perpetua Holdings of Illinois, Inc. has owned the cemetery since 2001 and the company president is Melvin Bryant of Richardson, Texas. (http://crimeblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/07/illinois-cemetery-scandal-has.html) According to the previous article (http://cbs2chicago.com/investigations/Burr.Oak.regulation.2.1079737.html) that you replied to, they were going to place regulations on it but it was blocked by the cemetery owners lobby (whoever that is).

Not really. Apparently, the Cemetery Care and Burial Trust Department has received many complaints about this cemetery before and, like all government departments in the world, it took the media to make it do something.

the media is powerless without the people going to them first.

but yeah, im giving up my debate, i just did a google search on Perpetua Holdings of Illinois and the first 48 pages are nothing but whats transpired in the last couple days. cant find anything about Perpetua Holdings of Illinois itself otherwise.... but living here in IL and seeing this same thing happen dozens of times with dozens of cemeteries..... i dont trust the media/government..... theres always things conveniently covered up and the blame shifted.....
