Alexa Longueira, 15, was walking with a friend along Victory Blvd. on Wednesday when she suddenly dropped underground.
"She's all scraped up on her back, under her arms and her shoulders," her mother, Kim Longueira, said.
The schoolgirl had just been passed the phone by her friend and was opening it to send a text message when the ground beneath her feet disappeared.
The manhole had been opened by a Department of Environmental Protection team flushing a high-pressure sewer line, officials said.
As stupid as she is for doing this, why wasn't there yellow tape around the opened manhole?

heck, i've been wrapped up in conversation before with an actual person standing next to me, to the point where i've walked into poles and such... i wouldn't be so quick to blame texting here... she should have gotten tangled up in Caution Tape before falling into the manhole...

I can't help but laugh though I do think there should have been caution tape. I can't say the same couldn't happen to me as I'm not the most coordinated person to begin with, especially not with friends while talking or texting.

Teens should be wearing helmets, elbow and knee pads, jock straps (boys, of course), and safety goggles when texting. Oh, and the thumb braces they'll probably end up wearing later anyway when carpal tunnel sets in.

Some people like myself simply aren't very coordinated whether texting is involved or not. I run into shit all the time usually when I'm not using technology.

 i don't care this chick was dumb. and she should i suppose count her blessings that she didn't end up like the chick who had her comp in the bathtub. i don't really see why you must text everywhere you go. standing in line, on a ride, on the toilet, during a strip show. c'mon people! it won't kill you not to text while your going from point a to point b will it? anywho her stupidity is her own and the workers were in the process of grabbing the cones, though they shoulda done that beforehand. just a few scrapes, nothing to sue over geeze.

Well, texting wasn't around 20 odd years ago when I was a teen. However, I've hit many a door, telephone/electric pole, vehicle, walls and even tripped over the edge of the sidewalk while talking to people and not paying attention.
It could easily happen to anyone.

I walk into things all the time. I have broken my elbow and a tooth walking on flat surfaces while not doing anything else (and sober)! On the other hand, I've read while walking most of my natural life without running into/tripping over anything. So I think I actually walk better with something in front of my face! LOL

Sometimes I have just seen orange cones set up around the hole. Those would be just as easy to miss as the hole itself if a person wasn't watching where they were walking. I tend to watch pretty closely. I've taken a lot of falls, mostly on ice, but even when it's dry, and have messed up my lower back pretty badly. But I think my oldest granddaughter doesn't watch where she's walking a great deal of the time - she has severe ADHD. So far she hasn't fallen into any holes.

I'm not going to blame texting either. :) I'm pretty clumsy too, and I don't even own a cell phone! Over time, I've gotten better at looking and listening to my surroundings.

It helps to watch wear one is going.. but I have smashed my being into lots of crap before. Heck.. I fell in a well two summer ago. ( just the one leg which was bruised for months)
I sometimes feel I need a guide dog just to get me down the stairs in one piece, and I am not a big texter.

One of my friends used to text while driving..lets just say I didn't get into the car with her often and if I did I usually had her phone. I could see her doing this too she texts way to much. I"m not sure why the need to do that but what do I know I still have the old land line at the house and have no intrest in getting a cell phone.
I"m already way to clumsy without the phone add in the phone and i'd be dead in a week I swear. LOL
