From what I have been reading the first step appears to be performing a guided meditation, is this correct?
Also, it would seem there should be some downloadable mp3s to walk one through astral projection. Anybody know of any?
Thanks

There is really no one way to proceed toward astral projection. Many people see this as a complex pursuit. While it's true that astral projection isn't to be taken lightly, the practice is more common than people often think. In fact, many of us travel out of our bodies when we are asleep.
Some people prefer to dreamwalk - that is, to encourage astral projection while their bodies are asleep. But many like to move from a conscious waking state (what is sometimes called a normal beta state) down into a deep meditative state (perhaps one centered around a theta or delta trance) without falling asleep first. The choice often has to do with control of the experience. For instance, some people find it easier to control their astral experience if they are anchored in a waking state. Others are perfectly happy to only project out of their bodies when they are sleeping.
If you wish to move into astral projection from the waking world, I would recommend a handful of possibilities for making the journey easier. First, make sure you can center, ground and cleanse during a normal meditative state before you go out journeying. Being able to enter a light trance state and do these things serves as a good pre-cursor toward astral projection while helping you to stay safe. Second, work on your ability to visualize. People often find it easiest to progress from physical to transcendental to astral visualization. Physical visualization begins with being able to picture a simple object from the physical world. Take a stone or crystal or piece of fruit of similar object without too much complexity and hold it in your mind with your eyes closed. From here, you can move to transcendental visualization. This is where you take the object and change your perceptions of it. Let's say you've chosen an orange. Close your eyes and picture what it looks like (physical visualization). Then imagine you are far above it, on the other side of it, a tiny ant looking up at it - any point of view you can imagine. This is transcendental visualization, and it can even extend to unraveling the object and putting it back together or radically changing its background (see it at the bottom of the ocean, or the surface of Mars, or floating above the highway). These practices help you comprehend what you are seeing when you move out of your body (astral visualization). And don't let the term "visualization" fool you - you should work with all of your senses (even your sixth and seventh senses, which is what you are really developing in these exercises). Third, once you are used to moving out of your body, take time to examine what you find in the otherworld and to figure out how to navigate there. Moving around and interacting with beings and locations in the astral is rather different than it is here in the physical world. You may wish to begin by remote viewing or bi-locating (I recommend you work on shielding and other psychic self-defense techniques before you do this, just to be safe). From there, you can move into various astral realms that are farther removed from this world.
Obviously, these are just some very basic instructions, and I can't make suggestions to meet your individual needs. But I hope the suggestions I've offered will be of some help. As always, reading and studying the process of astral projection is highly encouraged. Fortunately, there are several good books out there - on astral projection in general and on all sorts of shamanic pursuits from a vast array of different cultures.
You also mentioned guided meditations. These certainly can be helpful, and I encourage you to try them. However, be aware that there are cons as well as pros associated with guided meditations. On the one hand, you are being given help in seeing outside yourself and enhancing your ability to visualize. On the other hand, you may get to the point when you feel held back by the parameters of the guided meditation and want to go exploring on your own.
I wish you the best as you practice your skills. Astral projection is a wonderful experience that can definitely enrich your spirituality and magical practices.

Overall , very well stated , Scott...
What I would add to this , as far as mental cleansing ,
Dark Night , is one of the reasons for this , is what we
call the "Mirror Effect" , in my Tradition...
That anything taken into the astral plane , as far as
mental , or for that matter , emotional baggage , is
reflected back to us , in our experiences , and visions ,
in the astral dimension...
Physical applications of this cleansing may include
a lustral bath , sage and cedar , sweetgrass , or sea
salt...
Psychic cleansing methods vary...use what feels best...:uhhuhuh:

I always thought you had to be like...in a knocked-out type trance for this to work. I need to figure out the basics, but Google isn't being my friend :( If someone in the know wants to PM me about how to actually project or whatever, it'd be cool. Because if we're talking about deep-trance visualization journey-type things, I've almost done that...but not actual travel :weirdsmil
ETA: Sorry for the hijack...it seemed like a more appropriate place than usual :P

You might want to look up states of consciousness by type (beta, alpha, theta, delta) to give you an idea of the different types of trance possible. You'll get a lot if you google "beta alpha theta delta" or this with the added term "brain". Here's one example: http://web-us.com/brainwavesfunction.htm. Although keep in mind there are many over-simplifications out there. For instance, you can't be in a state that involves ONLY delta waves, but you can be in a state where delta is the most common type you experience.
As for which of these is conducive to astral projection, I think you can affect the astral from an alpha-based state, but you may not be fully immersed. I'd say full focus on the astral requires a theta-based state or lower. But I've never projected while I was hooked up to an EEG, so I'm just giving an approximation based on experience. :uhhuhuh:

Hmmm...I'll have a look. I guess my question is - how would I know for sure that I'd projected or affected something?
