I don't think its hilarious. We've reached a point where human-animal hybrids are entirely possible. Why is wanting to put a halt to that a laughing matter?

That was a pretty goofy report. I guess it's good they're going over this now, you know, just in case someone wants to try it :smileroll

People complain the government didn't do anything about the levees in Katrina or whatever. Now here the government is finally doing something BEFORE it becomes a problem, and people make jokes about it...

Apples and Oranges. Do I really need to explain why?
Forget your Supa Sci-Fi Thursday education and look at what such genetic experiments will actually yield. Greater insight in genetic disorders and diseases is just one avenue. Another would be superior cross species organ transplants... no waiting list for a new heart, just transfer a custom grown heart form a genetically altered pig or what ever.

Yesterday's science-fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_the_Earth_to_the_Moon) is today's science-fact (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_landing). Why shouldn't we expect that today's science-fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_of_dr._moreau) couldn't become tomorrow's science-fact (????)?
Especially when you take into account that human-rabbit hybrids have already been created in China.

i want a link to the human bunnies!
and if your gonna treat this as a legitimate problem then i seem to notice that human beings have no problem creating animal hybrids and messing with their genetics, even to the point of the animal being appallingly unhealthy. if we're going to be all outraged at this then why does no one give a crap about morbidly obese breeds of pigs, beagle sized rabbits, or ligers and mules? what makes it ok to mess around with them just because we can but not with our genetics? human hypocrisy at some of its finest if you ask me.

or ligers and mules?
That isn't the same thing, since that is the result of two closely related animal species getting it on with one another. This happens even without human guidance. Also consider the recent case of a polar bear mating with a grizzly bear in the wild to create a weird hybrid that some hunter shot. Point is, hybridization occurs in nature so it is a part of nature... to an extent.

It's a human rabbit hybrid embryo and it only lasted for a few days before being destroyed and harvested for their stem cells.
Here is an article about animal-human hybrids:

I never claimed it was otherwise.
I'm just pointing out that had it been allowed to develop its very possible we would have had a real life Dr. Moreau's island on our hands. The science is definitely there, all that is needed is the will to do it.

I never said you did. I'm merely giving more details about it.

but they're still messing with something they don't have a right to. just because they can. how's that any better?
and besides, you did make a fair point. that those are closely related species. and aren't many hybrids sterile? i seriously doubt we're going to start seeing people who have vulture wings coming out of their back or cheetarahs and lionels. :)

Man has naturally evolved to have intelligence and the ability to manipulate so..
who is to say man should not use its natural intelligence and capabilities of manipulation to create new species if they want? They are naturally designed with the intelligence and ability so they are as nature intended and perhaps nature also intends for them to create new? We are destroying species at an accelerated rate...replacing an extinct species with a new species has always been done. Perhaps nature designed us to have the capability to do just that.
Devils advocate at work. :bigredgri
Besides I think it would be great if we could grow furry tails. :toofless:
