Just out of curiosity, what herbs do you think is most important to have at home? What herbs can't you do without?

For food, my most important herb (home grown) is chives. Then closely followed by coriander, parsley, Otherwise it falls between sage, thyme and lavender, probably lavender would get my vote. Really though, whatever I can grow gets grown. I just wouln't be without my herbs. They are wonderful for all sorts, bath satchets, cooking, tending, etc. They keep me at peace.

I just love herbs and plants and flowers and all, unfortunately I don't have a garden, I don't even have a balcony... so I'm gonna start growing some herbs indoors, in my kitchen window. =)

I agree lavender is great... and also sage is a must...

What if you had to pick just ONE herb? What would you pick? I really can't decide...I'll have to think about this one...

Just one..... that is a decision that I couldn't make. Maybe rosemary near my door.

I don't think I could ever pick just one... ok but if I am gonna start growing herbs (unfortunately indoors, which I am... ) what would you say I just had to grow?! I got four windows in my kitchen, so I am thinking of growing plenty of herbs there... =)

What herbs do you store at home, you know what herbs do you use most? Like dry or fresh herbs...

Rosemary, peppermint, sage, lavender, calendula, chives, thyme, basil, chamomile...AUUUGGGHHH!!! Can't pick one...

I know how many herbs I'm growing this year...I'm in the process of moving my herbs to form a herbal medicine wheel...I have 49 different herbs. This is not counting the varieties...the six different varieties of lavender counts as Lavender. I use both dried & fresh herbs. As much as I would love to...I don't grow everything I use...just not enough space or time. I do have a couple of reputable places that I purchase my dried herbs from.

Emy, first you have to think about what you want to do with your herbs. Do you want to use them for cooking? Then you might like to grow chives, rosemary, sage, thyme, & basil, or any of the culinary herbs. If you're using them for sachets & pot pourrie, then patchoulie, lavender, pennyroyal would be good choices. For teas, you might want to grow peppermint, lemon balm, chamomile. All these herbs I've listed, I've grown them indoors as well as outdoors.

I use lavendar a lot, as well as small rose buds. But one that I can't do without but wouldn't even know how to grow if I couldn't get at my favorite store is galangal root. It helps to promote psychic powers if you carry a piece or two with you. Mine always ends up in the washing machine....

If you are planting mint, I would suggest you contain it, plant it in a container in the ground.....It grows like a weed. I now have mint all over my yard.

Rosemary is my #1 right now.

I am jealous, lavender is not a perennial here...I am in zone 3

I am drawn to heather right now, I am not sure if it is a considered a flower, shrub or herb. The dried flowers would be great in a sachet

I would have to say that I use chamomile the most. I make shampoo out of it and also I drink it in tea. I use honey to sweeten it. YUMMY!!! Anyway, I also drink lavender tea. But to my original statement, chamomile is a must. I'm thinking of trying rosemary in my shampoo next. I think it's suppose to bring out the red in your hair. We'll see.

I've never met an herb that I didn't love, and I love all that have been mentioned so far. I'll add a few that haven't been mentioned: violets, yarrow, artemisia, meadowsweet, and sweet woodruff. Working with a plant that is aromatic is so much more satisfying to the soul than those hybrid flowers that are just for show.

I love all herbs, choosing a favorite would be hard. Lavender would be at the top.... Aloe Vera is a must.. however it is not always considered an herb. It is a succulent but found in alot of herb books.. What is the defintion of an herb? Any plant that can be used for medicinal purposes?
I love rosemary too!!!

Perhaps this thread can be of help to the person looking for a must have herbal list.

As mentioned in another thread ("Must Haves" in this Green Room), mugwort is my #1.
Other than that I always have; thyme, oregano, basil, rosemary, parsley, chili and a bunch of others. I use a LOT of herbs in my cooking, and other than the ones mentioned I also have a lot of magick/medicinal herbs.

Abbycat would agree with catnip, Romani... and she'd add tea tree oil to the list. She gets MEAN with tea tree oil....

The only one I currently grow is chamomile so I'll vote for it. I planted lavender this year but I'm still waiting for it to sprout if it does.

That gave me a great visual!

Ok.. what was the topic? Oh yeah. Herbs.. Well for cooking I'd have to say sweet basil (smells sooooo good), chives, rosemary, sage, thyme..... ahggg! I cant think of only one. All herbs are much better when they are fresh. I live in a one bedroom apartment (w/o a kitchen window :( ) but I have quite a few potted herbs on my front porch and since I live in AZ, they do pretty well. But of all the herbs, I have to say that my sweet basil is my favorite.
