In almost every culture there are legends of submerged cities that once were paradises. Celtic culture contains a few of these that are mainly centered around islands. The idea of "submerging" may be one of going into the Otherworld or even be a much older primal/instinctive memory of a world when sea levels were much lower.

Analogies and stories of utopias abound in the mythic universe. Atlantis is one of these. The Biblical Flood is another. Tales of Ys and Lyonesse are Celtic versions of these tales. Even Tir na n'Og or Tir fo Thuinn can be considered versions of these magical lands in the sea or beneath it.
