Books by Lewis Richard Farnell.
So, I came across these older texts on Archive.org and they looked interesting.
As anyone read them? (Links go to archive.org where they can be downloaded, I recommend the black & white PDF)
Volume 1 (http://www.archive.org/details/cultsofgreekstat01farn): Cronos, Zeus, Hera, Athene
Volume 2 (http://www.archive.org/details/cultsofgreekstat02farn): Artemis, Hekate, Eileithyia, Aphrodite
Volume 3 (http://www.archive.org/details/cultsofgreekstat03farnuoft): Demeter, Gaia, Kore-Persephone, Rhea and Kybele
Volume 4 (http://www.archive.org/details/cultsgreekstate02farngoog): Poseidon, Apollo
Volume 5 (http://www.archive.org/details/cultsofthegreek05farnuoft): Hermes, Dionysus, Hestia, Hephaestus, Ares, & minor cults (Helios, etc)
Are they for the most part, accurate? Not?
Anyway, if no one's read them, they might be a good source to learn about the gods and their cults. From the little I've read, it seems informative. Though it was written in the early 1900s...

You're welcome. :)
ETA: I also found a Torrent for a 5 volume book set on Zeus (Zeus: a study in ancient religion (http://books.google.com/books?id=y_43AAAAIAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=study+in+Zeus&hl=en&ei=fgBZTKqENI32swOllbnYCQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CC8Q6AEwAA), plus the other parts-- note: this isn't the torrent, just a section of the parts Google has on preview). Like massive amounts of info. I haven't even gotten to read that one yet. I'm just glad I have the texts! The books are old, out of print and if sold, a lot of money. I find Zeus to be interesting. I could direct anyone to the torrent. Or share the PDFs. Just ask :)

You're welcome.
Could you (all) share your thoughts if you read the sections of gods you know a lot about-- to compare the info to what you know, etc? I'm curious to hear the thoughts of those more knowledgeable than I.

Will definitely try. But reading almost 600 pages on a PDF is gonna be a little hard. Though I do see that the University of Oregon's library has a copy, so I'll try to get my hands on hard copy. In the meantime, if I get any of it read on the computer, i'll post here.

Could you print some out? I think Apollo's cult section is shorter (I'm assuming you'd want to read his). I think I printed out Zeus' a few months ago and it wasn't that many pages (15, I think)...though I print weirdly-- like, 6-9 pages a sheet. That could be an option?
I wish there were more hard copies around (not only for these, but tons of other old books). :hrmm:

They're pretty readily available, it seems, for around $35-ish on a number of websites like Amazon. If they're worth it from the library, I might someday want to acquire the set.
As for printing...maybe some. i don't have a printer and right now have to use the library and, of course, pay by the page. I'll start with the Apollo bit and see how long it is, and if I can screw with it and condense it down to something that won't take up an inordinate number of pages- as it is, that volume is nearly 600 pages. but I do want to read it, so we'll see what I can do.
ETA: Taking a closer look, I see that Apollo's segment runs at least 300 pages (though there aeem to be quite a few blank pages towards the end). I don't *think* I'd be able to easily print that many...hmm...then again, if I could copy the text to a .txt file, and then throw it in google docs and reduce the font down to like 2 points (Yes, I would far rather read a 2pt font document than read it all on screen), I *might* be able to get it to a reasonable size. I'll try to screw with it tonight- I have to print a few other things at the library tomorrow, so if I can- big" if" there- I will.

Has Herakles, the Dioskouroi, Asklepios and general and other minor cults.

Yaaay! :boing:
I can't have physical books on this subject lying around the house, 'cause I'm in the broom closet as some of you know, so these links are all super-useful. I've been wanting to get more in touch with my spirituality and the like, too...
Thank you for posting
