My mom has gone back to Texas to be with her brother. He was diagnosed just a few months ago with lymphatic leukemia. First round of Chemo made him gravely ill. The cancer is gone, but his liver suffered major damage. While that is healing he is filling up with fluid. They have him on a ventilator and things are looking dim. Two different Docs have said they don't see how he can pull through this, but his original doc is saying he still has a chance and he isn't giving up. I hope he isn't just being overly optimistic.
They had to give him blood last night and again this morning, so he is bleeding from some unknown, internal point.
He is one of the kindest, most loving people you could ever know and I am having a very hard time dealing with this. Lots of anger right now. His youngest son is to get married in July. He had been trying very hard to get his strength back to make it for the wedding. Please keep him and his wife and sons in your prayers.
My mom lost her sister just a little over a month ago, so this is an especially hard time for her. She told me this morning she isn't coming home until he is off the vent one way or another. Please keep her in your prayers as well. I can't go to be with her until Trey is out of school next week.
Thank you all.

Update and a bit of good news: My mom called and told me they at least found the bleed. They have determined he is bleeding into his stomach and now they have an NG set to suction it out and are continuing to give him more blood and platelets to attempt to help the blood to clot. They are lowering the vent settings and he seems to be tolorating it fairly well. His still has an infection but hopefully the antibiotics will kick in soon.
Thank you for your thoughts and please keep it coming.

Update: They almost have the bleed stopped, but wont attempt to wean him off the vent until it is for sure stopped. His sputum tested positive for MRSA, which is no suprise to me considering the comprimised qulity of his immune system. So they have started the Vancomycin and hopefully he doesn't become resistant to that..that would be a bad thing.
Thanks for your continued prayers.

Well they had to do emergency surgery last night to try and stop the bleeding. They were able to stop the big bleed, but the entire lining of his Duodenum is bleeding, so I am not too sure how this will go. Please keep him in your prayers.
His youngest son is supposed to get married in three weeks. Please keep him in your prayers as well. Thank you.

Well, my Mom called from Texas this morning and said the doc has recommended that they turn off the vent. There has just been too much damage done to his body. My aunt is talking it over with their sons and then they will make this hard decision. Please say a prayer for them if you have the time. Thank you.

Sending prayers and energy for the family to find peace with all the decisions they have been making and will still make. I went through a time when I felt guilty for certain decisions as my mother was dying of cancer, but looking back later I realized that I (and all of the family) had done the best we could with the information and knowledge that we had. We can always see better in hindsight than in the tension and worry of the present, eh?

Thanks again for all your prayers and good thoughts. My uncle passed away about five hours after they turned off the vent. He was alone in the room. Often people will wait until after the family leaves the bedside and this is how he chose to do it.
So, we will make the trip yet again for a funeral on Friday. Please keep my Mom in your thoughts. She lost her sister two months ago, so this is a hard time for her right now.
Thanks again.

(((((Semele and family))))) sending energy for strength and love for comfort.
My mom did almost the same thing. My dad and youngest sister Peg wanted Mom to keep fighting the cancer, but the rest of us agreed that she was making the best decision for her. Then came the time she had been in coma for about 3 days and one evening about 5:30 my dad and Peg left to go home for the night, leaving me there to sit with her. A few minutes later the nurse came to help me turn mom to her side and we found that she had stopped breathing. It was so quick that I looked out the window to see if Dad's jeep was still in the parking lot. Somehow she knew that the coast was clear then.

My Dad waited for my sister, Debi, to leave the hospital. She was always Daddy's girl and even then I think he somehow knew it would devastate her to be there. Blessings and deep sympathy to your family, Semele. Take care.
