I was just curious if anyone here has and/or uses a rock tumbler? If so, where did you get it?

I have one. It's just a child's tumbler, though, likely from a toy shop. It works alright, but takes SOOOO long to polish a stone, I don't use it often.
You can get really really nice tumblers from lapidary stores...you should be able to look up "lapidary" in your local phonebook to find some near you.

I've read somewhere that using a 'rock tumbler' takes away from the stones properties...kinda like chopping off someone's leg or arm....
i've always wanted one...till i read that.
If you get one, let me know if you notice a difference in the stone and how it feels after you tumble it...

We got ours from a lapidary shop. We don't use it often as it's kinda noisy and it takes a while. When we do use it, we set it up in the garage.
FloraCove, I've heard that too but I haven't noticed any difference in the stones we tumbled. I had wondered if maybe I just wasn't sensitive enough to it. The black one that I carry all the time still feels like it's full of love that my son put into it.

Cool!
I was thinking about this thread last night, in my sleep...

The one we bought was a refurbished one. They had taken it in as a trade and completely refurbished it. A lot of lapidary shops will sell used ones...much cheaper. The only pain is having to change grit every so often.

It's been a few years since i used my tumbler. Was thinking of using it for a few cracked crystals.

I have a kids tumbler as well. i don't use it enough to need a better one. but there's always the chance i may would wish to tumble a larger stone and see what happens. hrm...
who knows.
I like tumbled stones and polished as it brings out the physical properties and makes them much easier for those who are beginning to recognize them from "some other stone" . IMO.

Mine is a little better than the "toy" ones but is not quite profesional. My biggest problem is I have a hard time finding grit for it.
I got mine at a rummage sale about 10 years ago.

I have a small one but don't use it very often. It takes weeks and weeks to polish and is so loud I have to wrap it in a blanket and put it in a cupboard
Ginger - I have never noticed any difference between tumbled stones or raw

I buy replacement grit on ebay. usually 3 or 4 $s per kind . lasts longer than what you buy for the Toy tumbler. :)

also for the best results with clear quartz crystals is to use titianium oxide for the fourth stage. That one gets them looking like pieces of ice(of course you will need the buffers a.k.a fifth stage) which i use Ivory Snowdetergent http://bestsmileys.com/drinking/20.gif

i am intrigued to get a tumbled one day too, but not at the moment for i live in an apartment house with sooo little space and sooo many neighboutrs. lol
but than again, i am also contemplating to buy a drilling mashine for gems (they are special mashines, not like the ones you d use at home) and pretty expensive too
just the drills are about 10 USD each. but this too isnt meant for here.
if you would like a polishing mashine, so you get the pieces to have a polished and a rough side, just let me knbow, i will post a new thread on how to make one yourself for little money :D

A rock tumbler is a devise which tumbles rocks. /it makes rocks smoother to the touch. usually they are rectanglar in appeareance with a cyclinder on top of it(this is the part where you put the rocks in).
