This occurred to me the other day when I got out of a tanning bed and realized I hadn't taken off my jewelry - can stones be affected by electrical ultraviolet rays? Of course I know that the heat may affect them, but I'm wondering if the ultraviolet would change or affect the stone's makeup or properties.

I haven't heard anything about that. I would imagine that it would have pretty much the same effects as sunlight.

Honestly I'd say the tanning bed is worse for you than for the stones!

Probably so - but I'm a sun worshipper from back in the day when we didn't know it was so bad for us :( I do prefer the real thing, but going outdoors in Oklahoma in the summer can really be hazardous to your health with our extreme heat. The heat from the bulbs is actually very therapeutic for my back, so that's how I justify it

Back on topic - I only know that sunlight can be used to charge stones. Are there also damaging effects?

No Damaging effects, Real or Fake Light... =)

Freyja, this is really funny that you brought this up now! A while back I posted about an Amethyst bracelet that I have that had been dyed. Well I lost track of it and the other day I found it--hanging from my rearview mirror where it had been roasting for a few weeks in the sun, apparently. Some of the stones had turned BLACK!!! So I asked my mom who is a science teacher and my aunt who is a lapidary and they both said that it was the dye that turned black. The stones are not affected by the sun or even the heat, (because the heat isn't really that high by rock standards). If anything, your stones probably just got a minor power boost :)

Thanks, that's good to know. Funny that you should mention keeping stones in your car. I've been keeping a smoky quartz in mine because it's said to protect your car from breakdowns. It apparently fell inside the steering column when I moved it and forgot to put it back where it was. Maybe it'll work better now that it's actually INSIDE the car :T

I work with cars and reading that makes me cringe. But I guess that so long as it doesnt interfere with you controlling the car... it probably doesnt matter... and maybe it will help.

I know this is a really old thread, but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents...

Intense UV light CAN affect some stones - they actually irradiate Tanzanite to turn it from blah brown to the gentle lavendar colour most people like. But that's at much, much higher levels than (I HOPE!!! ) you would ever be exposed to in a tanning bed.

if an opal get to hot and dry it loses it's shimmer -- because the shimmer comes from trapped water.
