A book that has been "essential" to me is by Valerie Gennari Cooksley titled AROMATHERAPY A LIFETIME GUIDE TO HEALING WITH ESSENTIAL OILS. I don't know if it is appropriate to give this info here but like I said, I've used this book so much in the year that I've had it that it looks like it is 20 yrs old. It didn't cost that much either. Hope this helps.

Another good book is "The Art of Aromatherapy" by Robert B. Tisserand. I bought it at a health food store, and it's pretty good. It only covers 29 essential oils, but is a good starting point.

Merry Meet All,
I have started a nice collection of essential oils and have been enjoying using them for ritual and other purposes. They are all in amber bottles and stored in a cool place. Only problem is I don't know how much of a shelf life they have. Does the shelf life vary with each oil? I wouldn't want to waste them by using too much at a time or not using enough. Any advise?
Blessed Be

Laiste,
I'm not sure of the shelf lives of most oils but I do know that when an essential oil is added to a base oil the essential oil takes on the shelf life of that base oil. Whew! There should be an easier way to say that. As far as wasting it, just go with the motto that less is best instead of more is better. The amount actually varies with what you intend to do with the oils and I'm definitely not an expert so check with someone else for more accurate info. Happy hunting.
