For many, many years wolf was my primary totem and protector. He's now stepped back for Bear to come forward in my life and O my! She has done so with SUCH power and love! I find that Bear also suits me better on a physcial level cause that's about how I'm built. ;)

Heh, watch Turtle. Some women who swim with her wisdom often find themselves blessed with children! :)

The only one I have that I know about is a cougar. A shaman performed a soul retrieval for me and I was helped by a cougar. Immediately afterwards, I found a medicine bag that had a hand painted cougar on it.

I don't know much about totems. I don't know the animals that are usually represented in them either, but I have been likened to a cat by many people so I consider the cat my protector. I just have not found the certain feline totem to express this yet...

I don't know about 'favourite' I didn't go out and choose my totem it was just 'there'. But I get on with it pretty well... the rat.

The two totems I am aware of are the cat and the wolf. The cat, I think, has been with me my entire life, and I believe the wolf "joined me" when I moved to Alaska (my birthplace), and has stayed with me.

When I first "discovered" that I was pagan, a butterfly became one of my totems, and revealed itself to me in a dream. Since then, I believe it has gone along its way. :)

Eagle guided me for awhile. But now Bison and Red-Tailed Hawk have stepped up to the plate.

I like all of Them. :)

Panther and Eagle are the two that I most closely associate with... but I have several, or so I'm told. Horse, wolf, owl... etc.

Panther, The panther symbolizes stealth and grace, as well as the ability to provide for itself.

Eagle, because it symbolizes freedom, wisdom, and strength in the face of adversity. That's me.

These are the first two that "chose" me... although I have quite an affinity for animals.

Blessings,

Kalika

I would definitely agree with your statement veinglory. Your totems, animal guides, fetish, whatever you want to call them really, are just there.

I grew up in Southwestern Colorado practically on the reservations. I'm of Native heritage myself (along with Scotch-Irish, and German), and we have quite a few Native friends. As such, in my family, when we came of age, the medicine man thereabouts gave us our medicine bags and our guardian fetish. Mine is Rabbit. However recently in my meditations, I've been greeted by Stag and his 'family.'

My mentors where worried that it was a bunny once...

Why exactly is that cause for worry? You can actually learn quite a lot from Rabbit. He teaches us to face our fears and call upon our own inner strength. As well, as that by being too eager you can actually turn your greatest fears into reality. Those who have Rabbit as a totem are usually quite skilled at living by their wits, and in that way can really be said to be quite wise. In fact according to Native tradition, the greatest lesson Rabbit can teach is that only the spirit/soul is immortal while the physical is transitory.

So perhaps you could explain to me why they were 'afraid' your totem would be Rabbit. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that, and in fact am quite thrilled to count Rabbit as one of my fetishes.

For me it's the otter. That was one nickname I had, then on one of my first meditations I swam with one. He said I was too serious, and he was there to teach me how to play.

When dealing with totems, please keep in mind that being approached by an insect, a rodent, a fish or a herbavore isn't *any* less important than one of the bigger predator types that so many ppl want to be connected with. Unlike humans, animals are not size queens. ;)

Each creature brings work, messages, lessons and blessings, so long as you open both your heart and your mind to what it has to say.

I have found most totems drift in and out your life when you have need of them but i guess some stay permantly with you ,my favourites would have to be those that stay with me Wolf and Raven both serve as teachers but in very different ways ,my Wolf is the gentler one giving me strength and her swiftness,my raven is rather caustic and blunt, sharp and to the point and a lot of the time tells me what i don't want to hear, does anyone else wish sometimes they could shut their totem up? walk softly.

Python, female deer are my two totems that are always with me. I use to live in PA, our house backed up on agaist the woods. We have a salt block out there for them. I loved watching them as a child. The snake came to me when I needed to let my true self out (Sed my skin). In many ways I think I'm still letting myself out bit by bit.
