MM All!

I had to share w/ you all a terrific video I bought through One Spirit book club. It's called Preparation of Herbs for Home Remedies. It features a woman whose name is Kay Moon Dreamer. She discusses herbal remedials from a "Native American" viewpoint, but I tell you, it has "PAGAN" written all over it!
Very good info for the beginner, and a good quick resource for all. How to make infusions/decoctions/tinctures from oil and alcohol/ointments, drying, storing, etc. She also says to "thank the plant" if you want to, and the video opens with her singing and shaking a gourd in the background while it shows a table spread with herbs, mortar and pestle, and all sorts of bottles and such with herbal oils, tinctures, etc in them. She sings "Give thanks to the Mother Gaia, Give thanks to the Father Sun. Give thanks to the healing garden where the mother and father are one. Give thanks, give thanks to you we do give thanks.."

Not only did it give me information, but that nifty chant as well.. now all I need is a dried gourd to shake.. :)

The only bad part about it is she talks like she's reading cue-cards. If you can handle her lack of acting ability and see through to the good informational content it is really a good video. I'm going to be getting the first video in the series, the one I have is the second. The first talks about different herbs for different ailments.
I don't recall what the third one talks about, but I'm sure it's pretty good also.

Thanks PaganKattGrrl, I will put that tape on my wish list. It sounds very informative. Actually the Native American teachings are quite similar to our Pagan philosophies.

My herb teacher (as I said before) studies with a Cherokee medicine man. She always thanks the plant before taking any of it. When looking in the wild for a particular plant, never take the first one you see, but walk on until you find a few more, never take the largest plant either (a way of not depleting the species I suppose). And when making the medicine, the reason is thought about while preparing the plant. Tell the plant you are taking it to cure "person's name" who needs to get better, repeat you are cutting the plant to help this person, when shaking it in the alcohol or simmering in water, keep thinking of the intention.

This is what modern physicians leave out with their million dollar studies, that is why those studies sometimes don't have conclusive results. The magic is left out of the medicine.

MM :)
I'm about 1/4 Cherokee, so that's why I'd bought the video.. trying to get back to some Native American roots :) Then when I discovered it was so close to what I've already been taught as a Pagan for the last 10 years or so it blended quite nicely in my already-formed tradition.. :)

Pretty spiffy stuff

Yep, that part of our blood just keeps calling us. Doesn't it?
