I'll give you the 'academic' viewpoint. Druids were one class of celtic society that also included the bards and the ovates. They held the history, the laws and the religion in oral traditions and were responsible for administering them. In that capacity, they were also advisors to the chiefs and kings of celtic society.

Well, that depends on what Culture, region, tribe, sect, etc and so forth you're wanting to know about.

Is there no general philosophy?

They were part of celtic society, so that their beliefs were the same beliefs found in celtic society as a whole. __The Apple Branch__by Alexei Kondratiev is a good book for bringing celtic beliefs into contemporary society. Each celtic nation did differ slightly in beliefs and practices, you'd have to read each one's literature for more detail. There isn't any difference between what the druids believed and what the rest of their culture believed.........

Greetings Socharis! Your question is a little vague my friend. Are you asking on the history of the druid caste or what WE, as modern druids, belive in.

If you could restate your question we might be able to help better.

Remember, we are All here for you.

Peace,
Twig

First of all differand Druids look at things differantly.
For instance some of us view the gods, and everything else that exist as manifestations of one supreme unknowable being.
Others view the gods as seperate individuals.
Most of us believe in learning about the gods by observing their effect on the world around us.
One of the central tenets of most Druidic paths is the seeking of truth.

There is a new school of thought that says that "Druid" was a social class that consisted of the intelligentsia, rather than being a class of priest. This social class would consist of the healers, priests, judges, lawyers, historians, etc.

Not yet a widely accepted school of thought, but spreading.

As for beliefs... Well, very few of the gods were common to all Celts. Taranis seems to have been one of the most widespread. When speaking of the Celts, one must remember that they were peoples who were classed by language usage. They had very little else in common. They covered most of Europe and the Middle East, even making inroads into China. Mixing with the indigenous peoples of all those areas, there is no way they could have retained a homogenous culture.
