View Full Version : Reiki Level Two- Expensive, but is it worth it?

I went for a Reiki I attunement last year and really loved it. I just got the information in the mail about the Level II class next month. Yay. Then I saw the price- $175. I know compared to some Masters, that is very cheap. But still, it is a lot of money for me. I did get some cash for the holidays, but that leaves me nothing left to spend if anything else comes up, like needing new clothes....

So on the one hand, I say I should take the money and just do it. It is something I wanted to do anyway, and I might not have the money and opportunity at a later time.

On the other hand, it is a lot of money...sheesh... Is the level two worth being broke until my birthday in June?

:) Not sure anyone can really answer that question but you.

It was worth it for me. Just as getting my Master's level was as well. However, will you use it for anyone besides yourself? Will you start a Reiki practice where you are charging for treatments? If not then you may want to look into getting free attunements. A lot of people on the internet offer free attunements, and some even offer certification for the cost of printing and mailing the certificate. You may even be able to find someone around here at MW who could do so.

Me, I paid for my attunement before I knew about the free attunements.

And on a personal note about why it was worth it for me:

I've suffered from gallstone attacks since my pregnancy with my son in 1997. For anyone who's never had a gallstone attack, they are extremely painful, causing nausea and other symptoms. I had been encouraged to have surgery, however I believe we need to leave our bodies as intact as possible, we were born with all these parts for a reason. I got the Reiki I attunement in 1998. The next day I had a severe gallstone attack. After that I didn't have an attack for six months. Then they started to gradually come back. In 2000 I got my Reiki II attunement. The gallstone attack after that was worse than the one after Reiki I. This time it was a year before another attack. In early 2003 I got the Reiki III/Master attunement. I had the worst gallstone attack I had ever had. Fever for three days and I ended up in the hospital at the end of it. They scheduled me for surgery, I finally accepted it needed to be done because this was bad. The day of the surgery my fever broke and I felt fine. The did an ultrasound to determine the condition of the gallbladder before surgery. NO MORE GALLSTONES!!!!! Just the day before I'd had at least 6 visible stones with who knows how many small ones. The gallbladder was inflamed and huge from the attack. And then, nothing, it was a normal healthy gallbladder. I attribute this to the Reiki. People often have a "healing crisis" after Reiki treatments and especially after Reiki attunements.

So yeah, I think it was worth it. I haven't had a gallbladder attack since :)

Right now I'm training for Reiki Level 2 and I do think it's worth it. Although, I did not pay that much.

Are you taking classes in person or over the internet? Because that makes a difference.

I don't live in a place that I can get Reiki classes, so I have had to do mine over the internet. But I have a teacher who has lessons and assignments for me to turn in. I can do them at my own pace. (the assignments are like practicing Reiki on a partner and reporting what happened) I'm really excited about learning level 2 because you learn how to do distant healings. And with my job, (I do psychic readings on a website) this is something that can help out my clients. So I definately think it will be worth it. (Not monetarily, but I have a wide audience that can receive it and get some help).

If you are open to the idea of getting attuned via the internet I would suggest shopping around. Although, there are a lot of scam artists out there so buyer beware. I ran into a fraudulent teacher, and it's just not something you want to go through...believe me.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks everyone.

Aine- That is an great story! And that is one of the reasons why I want to go for Level 2. I have a bad back and since I had the first attunement, I have had amazingly very little pain. I also have freinds who don't live nearby that I would like to be able to do distance healings on.

Two questions for you--
Do you feel the power of Reiki II, the actual energy you use, is much stronger? In other words, will you get more bang for your buck ((sorry I can't find better words than that LOL!) when doing a healing?

And do you have hints about how you find a reputable master online? crashtime, would you be able to trll me about your Master you are working with? Feel free to pm me if you prefer.

Many thanks!

I wouldn't necessarily say it feels more powerful, just a little different. Being able to send distance healing is nice, most of the people I know are far, far away. Without the internet I live a very isolated life.

As far as finding a reputable master online, my first hint is to trust your gut feelings. Also if you come across a site with something like "focus on the screen for 10 minutes and you'll be attuned to Master level Reiki" or "your attunement will be sent by email" run, run away very fast. You want somebody who is going to actually take the time out of their day to send the attunement to you Try http://www.reiki-do.org They've got free reiki teacher listings here: http://reiki-do.org/free.htm

I'm sorry, but it sounds like you're talking about a video game RPG where you're standing in the Magic Shoppe trying to decide how to spend your gold. :p "Should I get Reiki 2 or Fireball 3? Hmm..."

I'm sorry.. I just have a rather large button when it comes to mass-produced instruction in spiritual/magical paths. Sort of trivializes the whole learning experience, in my veiw.

Plus, when it comes to Reiki, it's very easy to get ripped off. A level II "attunement" (my HP is a reiki practitioner, I'll ask her if that's a real thing or a sham when I talk to her tonight) for $175 sounds suspiciously like a fleecing session waiting to happen.

Actually $175 is cheap when you consider the prices charged by the "big" names. If you go to the current "head" of the tradition, you'll pay around $225 for level one, $1000 for level two and $10,000 for level three!!!!!

It's based on the idea of energy exchange, that people don't value things unless they really pay for them.

Sorry- I didn't mean to come off like that. :p

What I was getting at was that $175 is a lot of money for me right now, being a stay at home mom with lots of bills piling up. I was wondering if it was worth being "broke-er."

Aine- thanks for the link- I am checking out the site now.

One of the reasons I am not doing Reiki in a shop is that the owner wants me to charge a set fee, which I think is too high. Dr. Usui wanted Reiki to be accessible to everyone. While there must be an exchange, the exchange only needs to be some sort of energy, not necessarily money. When I do Reiki in a setting where an exchange other than Reiki is appropriate, I work by donation and am always surprised at how much the person gives me.

I hate to take away from someone who is probably making their living by teaching Reiki - but I believe it goes against Dr. Usui's wishes to charge that much. If you look around you can probably find someone who works by donation, or even a Master who will give you a long-distance attunement for a reasonable fee or barter. Unless you have that kind of money, I don't think you should pay that much.

I gave $60 and a deck of tarot cards for my Reiki II.

I'm just now looking into my Level One. It will cost about $260 Canadian (so much less in USD). It is in person teaching, with a person registered with the Canadian Reiki Association (thank goodness!).

I am hoping to make it a job eventually (I also plan on taking reflexology, aromatherapy, and basic herbal healing as well), so I think it will be worth it. Not to mention, if I can heal my own ills (and I have A LOT for someone who is only 24), it will be well worth it (vs. the price for medication and the pain).

Reiki is definitely "worth it," but not everyone can afford that type of exchange. My point is that there are other options and it's not the monetary cost that determines its worth. When exhorbitant fees are charged, this makes Reiki inacessible to some people. Usui wanted it to be accessible to all, so those who charge high fees without some flexibility in the exchange are going against his wishes, IMHO.

Origin of the $10,000.00 Fee
As time went by, Mrs. Takata contemplated the need to train other Reiki Masters. She realized that the Japanese concept of respect might be difficult to instill in the Western mind. Because Reiki Mastership is so easily learned, being simply passed on during the Reiki Master attunement, she felt that Westerners might not value it. So she devised a plan of charging a large sum of money for those wanting to become Reiki Masters. She felt that money was something that Western people understood and respected and this would help create the appreciation and gratitude for Reiki that was needed. She decided that $10,000 would be a large enough sum to instill the respect needed for the Reiki Master attunement. She also set the fees for Reiki I at $175 and Reiki II at $500. These high fees have continued to be charged by some Reiki Masters, but many are now considering a lower fee structure that makes it possible for anyone who feels guided to do so to become a Reiki Master.
The International Center for Reiki Training offers classes for reasonable fees. For Reiki class and fee information see the Reiki Trainings page.

I am at reiki II right now, and I got here for free, but I was very lucky to find a teacher who would attune me and teach me for free, so when I hear these outrageous prices sometimes all I can do is sit and stare with my mouth hanging open.

any time there is a level one course for it here where I live I do not either have the money for it or a babysitter, but it is something I hope to pursue to.

:) Not sure anyone can really answer that question but you.

Totally agree.

Would I have paid $175 for Level 2 if I had no other options? Probably, if I had to, but I didn't. For me it would be silly.

Is it worth it? It's worth a lot more than $175... but that doesn't mean you have to pay that much.

I can't speak from experience but my mother has taken the 2nd attunement(sp?) and she has found it to be well worth the money.

I generally charge $100 for level one, and $125 for level two, and $300 for level three. That is perhaps a little on the low side, but not by much. Personally, I don't care if someone is a member of a reiki alliance or other organization. As long as the teacher teaches the required material, then the degree should be recognized as Usui by any organization. These organizations are essentially social cliques rather than any guarantee of quality. BTW the reason for the aforementioned $10,000 US according to the story that I heard is that this was what Takata was charged when she got her level 3. But there are so many apocroful stories about the reiki personalities. Oh and Calliope, your icon looks just like you.

When I took my Reiki I, in 1993, it was $150.00 (US). Level II, in 1994, was $250.00. Level III, in 1995 was $500.00. I paid it, and found it worth every cent. It also seemed to me that when the Universe was calling me to take the classes, the money was available. At one point, when I thought I was ready for level II, I just couldn't get the money together. (That was three months after level I). A year later, the Universe opened the door.

Now, in 2005, I charge $100.00 for level I. $175.00 for level II. And $350.00 for Mastership training. As of right now I probably won't lower my fees as I also feel that Dr. Usui's rule that there should be an even exchange for Reiki is a good rule. If a person feels that I did them a "favor", then they will feel indebted to me, and I want no one to feel that way when they leave my class. The classes are worth every penny.

Bright Blessings!

hello ;) its been a minyte since i was here, but i got that email from semele and company about missing those who havent been on in a while. so anyway. a quick history on reiki by Dionysis, because i cant remember the names of the people who started it ;) one day a master monk was sitting in his temple, when one of his students asked him a very odd question,
"Master?" he started, "How is it that Jesus healed with just a touch?"
this puzzled the master and so he set out on a 28 day fast/journey, where in he sat on a cliffside, and each day he waited. and each day he would throw a stone over the side of the cliff. 10 days went by, 15, 18, 23. and on the 28th day, after he threw his 28th stone, nothing f@%king happened. So a slightly enraged and extreemly hungry monk started contemplating some rice. maybe a little duck, or some...THEN IT HAPPENED! the Reiki Symbols appeared in bubbles moving toward him and the hit him like a mack truck! he about did a back flip i hear. so being all happy he made his way for that rice, and he had decided he was DEFINATLY getting the duck, he didnt care if its a greasy bird. so the man sits himself down to eat, and the waitress spills hot tea all over herself. so our hero decides its time to try out his new powers. and by god it healed her right up! everyone was amazed. soon all the lepers and the terminally ill, or the bum who just never got to any other doctor, were coming around for free healings, and everyone was so happy!....Except.....that...the people who were all poor just kept themselves in the same situation and thought it would be all right because they could just get healed by that monk who did it for free. and this done pissed that monk right off. RIGHT OFF. well not that bad, really it just made him see that if you constantly do for someone they will never do for themselves. so he started charging people. and if im not mistaken, it was a woman that brought it over to america, and i believe she was just going by the same principal of if its something you want its something you should be willing to pay for. the 3rd is like 8-10k or something ridiculous like that. alot of people now though are learning that this is a magic that needs to be on the planet, and alot have stopped charging for attunements. I have my second, and i have no doubt its just as potent as someone's who paid for it. but everyone that knows reiki, has the same basic lineage. THATS my favorite part. its like having a bunch of family ;)

well i hope you like my rendition of the story of REIKI
(all events in this story were based on actual facts, the names have been forgotten to protect the identity of the participents and their families)

-Dionysis ;)

Reiki at all levels can be had free of charge for those willing to seek out those opportunities.

I personally preferred to pay and support my teacher and favourite bookstore, but I payed for her time, because I would have felt guilty otherwise.

Still, many people are offering these energies without charge, because like me, they believe it's something that the world desperately needs, and we want to make a difference!

I recently got my Reiki I attunement and I am having a wonderful experience ( barring the lovely healing crisis that followed for a couple of days after)
I am lucky to teach with a group in my area and because there were so many of us who wanted to learn, the Masters gave us a wonderful price and even donated a portion back to the group.

We are scheduled to get our Reiki II at a later date and we will get the same wonderful rate ($75). For me the ability to do distance treatments is the main factor in getting my Reiki II.
