I'm thinking of buying, so I'm after some advice ;)

Personally, I use the pendulum method. Seems to work fine for me.

Well, if you are thinking of 'buying', why not try all and see what works best for you? However, I recommend starting with a bowl of water first. Bowls are not overtly expensive normally, and you can find a good silver one (excellent for scrying in my experiences) often in thrift shops, or even at your local Wal-Mart. Afterward move up to the pendelum, which only requiers a significant object, such as a ring or crystal (something you may already have!) tied to a string or cord. Next, move up to a mirror, since it will cost a bit more. Finally, if you feel you need to, invest in a crystal ball since those can be rather costly.

Of course there are numerous other ways to scry, such as a formula I created myself drawing on voodoo and ceremonial magic, where you take a piece of wax paper (available in most, if not all grocery stores and sections) and cover it with graveyard dirt. I suggest taking dirt from a grave that has a great deal of meaning to you, such as that of a loved one, or if that is not available (such as in my case) pay visits to local cemetaries and see which grave draws you to it. For me, it happened to be a fat woman (no, really, she was the fat woman with the traveling carnival that stops here every year and simply died in this town) Ma Amor as I really enjoy her energy. I would most definitely leave a gift to the person you took the dirt from, burying it into the ground where you took the place from. Afterward, cover the wax paper in the graveyard dirt and sprinkle holy water on it, making note of any symbols or pictographs that jump out at you. It's cheaps, only requires wax paper for you to buy (unless you do not have anything to create holy water from, and there are varying recipes), and very effective for me.

To divine the future, past, and present. Most people see it, as with all or many forms of divination as fortune telling, when truthfully the future is simply not that set in stone. Divination shows us possibilities, and most likely outcomes so that we can prepare and possibly adjust our course in life appropriately.

As far as I know, Quartz is good for a general use pendulum :)

When I last scried (sp?!) into a cup of dark water I saw a glowing figure in a white cloak, walking left to right (west to east in my circle) through a dark area (I think maybe a forest) and she seemed to twirl at times as though dancing - is this the normal kind of thing people see?
Lots of websites tell you ~how~ to scry, but not what they personally see. Would be interesting to know what you guys see when you scry :)

All I know is I suck at scrying

I've tried pendulums, bowls of water, darkened mirrors, crystals, etc. I just can't see anything!

I guess I'm more suited to 'nature' techniques. If I sit by the ocean or a stream and lose focus in the sound of the water, I get loads of information, visions, etc.

I'd say that comes under the title scrying :)
Apparently the Native Americans use the smoke from their fires...

What you see is what you see. If you saw that only you can discern what it is.

When I scried for my chief totem animal I did so with a large clear quartz sphere. I saw lots of black feathers clouding up the ball and then a raven flying out of the feather chaos and into the sky.

Things can be weird, but most often they're weird to suit your perception and if you take a bit of time, you'll figure them out.

Glad I could help. Just remember, what you see is something that your unconcious knows you can unlock the meaning to, otherwise you would not see it. It may be difficult in some cases, or easy in others, but it is always possible. :)

Unfortunately I'm one of those people who doesn't realise what their dreams mean until 6 months has passed ;)
