OK, I've got the runes out and I found a decent web site which provided me with some basic information.
Most of the web sites I have visited have said basically the same thing when it comes to learning the runes, study them get to know them, from what I understand you take one rune at a time and get to know it. understand what it stands for and then move on.
Since I am just begining to study and work my way through things I would like to know . . .
As I get to learn an aett, can I use just those eight runes for divination?
or am I cutting my self short by only using eight instead of a full set?
I'm pretty sure of what the majority of opinions will be but am just looking for some ideas. I usually learn best from doing instead of just looking and studying. :)
Thanks,
Loki

...using only an aett at a time... that's a very interesting concept... I say give it a whirl... I doubt anyone will be killed :D , & it probably will work OK (you may just get some weird 'messages').

is, when the runes are used only a few are used at a time so what is the difference whether all are used or just a few?
You need enough to make the out come less predictable, but still if all of them aren't going to be used in the reading then it seems to me to be just as good to use one Aett than three.
As I learn them I would add them to the ones I am using, of course.
Just my thoughts anyway. :)

Thats a really good way of learning the rune Loki! (now why didnt I think of that when I learnt!?)
I totally agree with what you are saying!
Aett means family or group of eight, so it would make perfect sense to leanr them in there families.
Ive also heard that aett is a journey (this is how they are to me) and I believe each family/journey to different ~
The first ~ Freya's aett:
~ love, life and happiness.
The second ~ Hagal's aett:
~ money, achievements and success.
The third ~ Tyr's aett:
~ Intellect, understanding and spiritual growth.
I believe that you do need all three aett to determine a wide range of answers and thus a accurate answer in the long run.
Id love to find out how they were all placed in each aett the way they were.. but if you go through them all you can make up your own story.

The order of the Elder Futhark tells the history of the Old Germanic/Norse Myths... we'll discuss it when we begin our Rune discussions (hopefully, later today, or tomorrow).

it made sense to me :)
When I actually start using them I will let you know how things work out.

I want to try my hand at the runes. I don't have any pressing matters in my life right now so, what do I ask?
What kind of questions do I ask or what do I look for in the runes?
can I just draw runes with no particular thought in mind and try to interpret them?
If all goes well I'm sure there will be lots more! ;)

...most any reading I do for myself (or get from someone else), I just phrase it, "Tell me what I need to know."
One thing about Runes: they are brutally frank. And they have a tendency to tell you what you need to hear, as opposed to what you may have asked.

So I can throw a bunch of runes out and try to read them, but it would be easier if I had a goal or particular thought of some sort in mind?
Reguardless they will tell me what they think whether I like it or not, is that right?

Yep Loki thats right..think about something you want the Runes to answer then throw them out and read what comes up according to your question!
