After discussing some of the differences between Green Wicca/Witchcraft and kitchen witches, we thought that Kitchen Witchery and folk magic deserved its own thread here.

I have been a Kitchen Witch "officially" for a few years now, but have always used a bit of energy and magic in my cooking and cleaning, and in my daily life.

Many kitchen witches do not connect the religious and magical features of Witchcraft in their workings. However I do. My relgious take is similar to that of Wicca- I believe in The One, which consists of masculine and feminine energies. These different aspects of energy are what I consider the different God/desses to be. I also follow the Wheel of the Year and many of the Elemental represenations that Wiccans do.

However, much of the ritual involved with Wicca has no part of my practices. I tend to be very simplistic in how I do spell work, honor the Divine or celebrate the Sabbats. And yes, my "athame" is my kitchen knife. :p

I am thinking about running a course as part of the MW cCircle of Teaching- so if anyone thinks they might be interested in that, please let me know.

Wooooo folklore. *does the folklore dance*

I can definately understand the stuff about the kitchen witchery. I'm not very good at cooking or anything but my first spells were trimmed to meet what we had in the pantry... heh. And my sister knows just a bunch of herbal remedies from the civil war on up. *boggles*

I'd certainly be interested in a kitchen witch course.

Ok, that sounds very interesting. The setting up of a kitchen altar and the Magical household are the clincher for me. :)

When do you think it might be up and running?

Sounds like it'll be a great course. I may have to break my own rule about only two classes. Kitchen witchery is something that always fascinated me.

It probably won't start for ...um... 2 weeks. I have to make sure morr and mol give it the go ahead. And I want to flesh out my ideas a bit more.
Most of the information flits around in my head- I just have to catch it and write it all down- coherently- and that is the hard part.

And as a disclaimer, my path is a very simple, sometimes made up on the fly kind of thing. But I hope that we can get some good discussions going.

Blessings.

That would be fantastic to have a course on kitchen witchery, since a lot of kitchen witches tend to be solitary (that I have noticed anyway) and it would at least be a good chance for people in that path to maybe get to know each other, not to mention learn from each other.

I was raised kitchen witch. Well, village witch actually, people have always come to our home telling us they have a headache or whatnot and we give them teas or whatnot that help. I could help with the course if you'd like!

Windigo, I would love it! I wasn't planning on too much discussion on healing, since we have a Healing class here. And IMHO, I see healings more as a green witch/hedgewitch path. However those three paths are very close and overlap oftentimes, so if discussion comes up on that, it will be bonus. I would love your input and experience. :)

nvrgnabok- Sure you would be good. Please sign up. I promise the lessons and assignments will not be difficult. Or time consuming. And if you feel like you are having any dificulty, just pm me and we'll work it out.

Chryssi, great idea. Now that's a class I could really go for! I've been very much a combination of Hedgewitch and Kitchenwitch the last couple of years. Your lesson plan looks very interesting - I can't wait! *hurries back to kitchen to check on madeira cake in oven*

I'm pretty ecclectic, but I've always found kitchen witchcraft interesting. I'd be interested in that class too!

Could someone tell me what a hedgewitch is? I'm not familiar with that term. Thanks!

Just for the heck of it I'm going to guess that a hedgewtich is a witch using plants and plant life with their magick....am i right or wrong?

I think, but correct me if I'm wrong, that the term Hedgewitch reflects a witch who is solitary, and practices in an informal and simple way (yet no less powerful and spiritual than those of us who ascribe to set ritual pieces and ceremonial magick). The author Rae Beth, in her book 'The Hedgewitch's Way' says that the term may be derived from the nineteenth century term 'Hedge-Priest', who was a priest who belonged to no church or group, but travelled the countryside teach on ministering informally - beside the hedgerow. She doesn't quote her sources, so I'm not sure how true it is, but there you go.

I have practiced quite elaborate rituals, but I tend to feel a little silly doing them on my own, which affects the energy raised and really doesn't work for me. I'm a lot more informal, these days, and get a lot more results!

I've signed up! I am excited about this one.

I hope the fact that I never learned to cook won't effect my magic that much!

So what is the difference between a kitchen witch and a hedge witch? I was under the impression that kitchen witches were fairly solitary and informal too.

I just wanted to direct people to Macha's thread on Traditional Witchcraft in the Paths forum. I believe that hedgewitchery is extremely similar to, if not the same thing as, Traditional Witchcraft.

And here is a good website with a description of hedgewitch:
