I just got the book, A Practical Guide to The Runes by Lisa Peschel.
As I started to read through the book I noticed she gives meanings for reversed runes. I was also reading some stuff on the internet which didn't mention the reversed positions.
Should I be taking note of these positions?
Or does it depend on how you cast the runes whether or not you take into consideration the reversed position or not?
In the book the author gives specific layouts for readings, where as I thought they were just strewn out in a random pattern and read that way.
I realize there is more than one way to do things, but what is the most common method and is the reversed rune taken into account?

Well, my answer may not hold much meaning as I use a rather unusual runeset. For me though, in magick the runes know no reverse, and for divination, the runes generally hold the same meaning in reverse, but being reversed signifies that the meaning isn't from a perspective that we would usually look at it.

How do you reverse Isa - I ? Or the other 7 non-reversible Runes in the Elder Futhark (the ones that, when you turn them upside down, look the same)? Does the author give 'reversed' meanings for these Runes (don't laugh yet; I've read authors that do give reversed meanings for them).

I don't think it matters, as long as what you do is consistent in your readings. I personally don't consider the reversed position in any type of readings. I look for all aspects of the Rune (or card, etc, depending on what I'm reading); how does it seem to fit into the general flavor of the reading, what does your intuition tell you, etc.

The different layouts often have different uses: quick 'yes or no', 3 Rune 'past, present, future' of an issue, full cast, etc. No right way or wrong way, just different ways.

I agree with Rick and think that there is no need for them to be reversed ~ each rune already holds its own positive's and negative's ~ some more positive or negative than others so I always determine whats 'good' and 'bad' from the runes surrounding the runes... If that makes sense :D

I can see how the layouts can assist in learning how the runes may relate to each other in a reading, but I always got the feeling that just reading them from the way they fall from my hand is better. More of an accurate way to view the universe in its chaotic form. with that perspective I can't see how you could view a rune as being reversed seeing as how there really wouldn't be an up or down. The runes are read from your perspective and when scattered there would be many perspectives to read them from.

I hope you followed that?!
(Yike that got ugly)
