Merry Meet
Well I have decided to follow my own path and choose what I want from other traditions, I look to numerous Deities from the Celtic Pantheon, I follow the Wiccan Rede, I enjoy healing with Herbs and Crystals, but what is an eclectic?
Where does this word come from?
And what does it mean?
I am still learning to find my own two feet, so please bear with me as I am still learing and will be forever learning! Thanks and
Blessed Be

Eclectic according to webster's means
Eclectic \Ec*lec"tic\, a. [Gr. ?, fr. ? to pick out, choose out:
cf. F. ['e]clectique. See Eclogue, and cf. Elect.]
1. Selecting; choosing (what is true or excellent in
doctrines, opinions, etc.) from various sources or
systems; as, an eclectic philosopher.
I think different people have different definitions of what being an eclectic pagan is but I basically view it as this....Eclectics pick and choose what works best for them!

I think AriaBeltane sums it up pretty nicely...for me it's all about what works for each individual. I follow a mainly Celtic path myself but there's a lot of Norse, Stregheria, and Native American in there as well.

From one of the newest articles on my website:
A definition of eclectic, from the The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language - Fourth Edition:
1. Selecting or employing individual elements from a variety of sources, systems, or styles
2. Made up of or combining elements from a variety of sources
Generally speaking, most consider the sects of British/English Traditional Wicca the traditional ones: Gardnerian, Alexandrian, Kingstone, Majestic, Georgian, ect. Many consider the following to fall under the traditional title as well: Welsh, Celtic, Norse, and Santeria. When I think of traditional Wicca, it is the British sects that come to mind.
The eclectic branches include Feminists, Wiccan Shamanism, Kitchen Witches, Radical Faeries, and many solitary practitioners.
The path of the Eclectic encourages and allows freedom to pick and choose, to tailor the path to the individual that tradition bound persons may not have (or at least not to the same extent). Being Eclectic requires that you remain open to new experiences and ideas, be tolerant of other ways, and develop a feel for what works and what doesn’t. The greatest challenge facing an Eclectic is to learn the basics of what works for them and then create from what seems chaotic because of all the options, a way or doing things that fulfills their spiritual needs.

Although I am a traditionally trained Pagan now, for many years I was eclectic. I think there is much to respect in both paths.
