View Full Version : Nana broke her hip yesterday..

Nana is 79 and while getting dressed for church yesterday, she fell and broke her hip. Luckily it was a clean snap at the ball, but she just had surgery tonight and she could use some healing energy if anyone could send some.
She has been taking care of Grandfather for the last year (he had major bowel surgey twice in the last year, and is doing well now) and she's given herself wholely and tirelessly to our family for as long as I can remember, and I can't imagine her being down and out any longer than necessary.
Thank-you for your time!:hugz:

:steppy: Thank-you; she should be out of the hospital in four or five days, then she'll probably come to the hospital/nursing home where I work for rehab. At least I'll be able to visit with her on my dinner breaks!

Oh.. I am so sorry. My mother broke her hip... well really the thigh bone, just after Halloween. It's a hard thing for those old folks to get over.
I will keep her in my prayers and those taking care of her while she recovers.

Needless to say, as your beloved Nana is my beloved Mom, I am focused very much on her healing. And you're right, Twilightsky -- she is a most remarkably loving and giving woman who deserves all the strength, comfort, and energy that Love can give her...

Thanks for all your prayers! Nana is now in the hospital where I work, in pain, but doing therapy- she walked today when I was visiting her on my break! If all goes well, she'll be home in 2-3 weeks! Grandfather sure misses Nana, but thankfully she's closer to home now, and he can come down a couple times a day to see her! I wish I had 1/2 her strength!;)

Yes, I think the last time he had cooked his own meals was when Nana was in the hospital after giving birth to Aunt Abby in 1960!..... My Mom + Uncle Chris really did love the maraschino cherries in the macaroni salad, though! (Of course, they were all out of pimientos and he wanted some color in it..)

Twilight! :hugz:
It is good that you are able to be there for her.
I worked in a hospital about 10 years ago, but it is another thing when it is your own family.
1 week sounds about right post op.
My grandmother has Parkinsins and Osteoperosis, she had fell and broke her hip too, she had to get the bone put back and has a pin to hold it in place. She didnt need a hip replacement.
THe Surgeon told me that most elderly people when they fall like that, they dont walk again...
All the cards were stacked against her, but ONE MONTH later, she is home, and has her walker but she sometimes gets around without it.
They were giving her Darvecet for Pain, but as the hip started to heal and she is able to do more, and is not laying on the couch all day, the pain is greater, DR says this is normal and is a sign that she is healing.. he switched her to Ultram (Tramadol HCL) for pain, it is non narcotic and doesnt have codine...
This is very important: you will have to be patient with Nana, she will be shaky for a few weeks, Physical Therapy can only work if she has the support of her family... When she is transfered from the hospital to the Nurseing home, it is EXTREMELY important that you re assure her that she is just there for therapy... My grandmother was crying when she was transfered, and she was scared,... all she knew was she was in the Nurseing home so it took a week or so for her to realise we werent just dumping her off there... even if it is for a minute, if you are on duty and just pop in and say hi, it will make a world of difference...
The wing where my grandmother was in had about 15 rooms, and I would say maybe 3 of them had visitors that I saw... and I was there jsut about every day after work and I even asked the nurse, and she said that My grandmother and the Guy across the hall were the only ones that got as much visitors...
another thing is that it is common for older people to get depressed after they fall like that, whenever you notice Nana is able to do something she wasnt able to do 2 or 3 days ago, make sure you point it out and remind her that she has to give her self time to heal. She may or may not feel discouraged, and by all means, DONT BABY HER, if she is able to do something, then let her, and tell her how proud you are of her...
when it was time for My grandmother to come home, My mother and I went to the Nurseing home and we had a meeting with the "Care Plan Team" we were about to start the meeting and then I said, "Why dont we bring my Grandmother in and surprise her" the nurse looked at me and said "that is the most wonderful Idea"
You should have seen it, they wheeled her in the room and my grandma was like "What's going on " what happened?? and the Nurse told her that they were sending her home, and My grandmother was in tears. she was sooo happy...
we put new carpeting in the house and made a few accomodations for her, but you should see her gettting in and out of the car... I took her to my sister's for her "Father's day lunch" and yesterday she went to see the Surgeon, and while they were doing her X-rays, The Dr said to me that he was glad to see us, and I said that I was glad my grandmother is in the Minority that he spoke of, and The Dr said "Thank God she has you" of course you know i lost it, and started crying lol
If you need any advice or need to talk, im here ...
DONT WORRY, Nana will be fine!

Thanks for all of your warm thoughts- Nana is thriving, though I can tell she's getting sick of hospital life.
I come to visit her on my 15 min. break and my dinner break, and I think it's great for both of us. We brought the kids in to see her today- my daughter calls her Mama Nana( appropriate, I think, since she is the matriarch of our family! It's nice too, if she's in need of extra care, I can usually get it quickly for her since I work there! The only problem is that my breaks aren't longer...
Thanks again, guys!

 I remember that -- only it was eggsalad, not macaroni, and the little bits of masaschino cherries were delightful, at least at the age of 10 I thought so. Must admit I haven't tried it since. (My mom was less than thrilled to hear about it.)

- my daughter calls her Mama Nana( appropriate, I think, since she is the matriarch of our family!
That's because she decided that I was "Nana" too ("Me have two Nana's", said Adrienne one day at my mom's house). When Twilightsky asks if she wants to talk to Nana on the phone, she'll ask, "Me Nana? You Nana?" to differentiate... Then she started to refer to my mom as "Mama Nana" which, as Twilightsky pointed out, is most appropriate for the family matriarch! But it's really short for "My Mama's Nana"
Thank you all so very much for your kind thoughts and energy -- my mother is a very, very beloved and special person to all who know her.

That's wonderful. My mom only had to be in the hospital for a week but then she also had therapists come to the house twice a week for a while.
She is getting around too fast for me. I think she needs to slow down. I'm always telling her not to forget her cane..
I hope your Nana, is careful. We wouldn't want her to have to go through all that again.!!!!
