The rumor that New Orleans is going to sink with every hurricane that hits it has been going on forever... I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure it'll still be there after this one (assuming it hits New Orleans). But I sure as heck wouldn't stay there for one. I know how bad they can get here and we aren't that close to the coast.

I hope for the best too, but I think it is smart to head to higher ground for a few days, look at what Francis did... and this one is stronger and moving about the same speed as francis..

They've been leaving the city. It's just one of the hazards of living on the Gulf Coast. The reason people get freaked when a hurricane points even vaguely at New Orleans is because not only do you have a lot of people concentrated there, much of it is also below sea level, one of the absolute worst places to be during a hurricane.

I hope I don't die

Don't worry... if it becomes a definite thing, New Orleans will be subject to a mandatory evacuation and your job will have to let you leave.

not to sound nitpicky..... but New Orleans is below sea level.... instead of sinking wouldn't it be submersed?

I hope everyone out there gets out safe... I've been wishing to move to the coast (Possibly Tiki Island) but when stuff like this happens... I rethink my dream.

ewwh.. i had a weird thought.... what if Ivan got so big it split into two hurricanes? I know tornadoes can do that (and merge) but I don't think hurricanes can do that so close to landfall. Crazy Ivan is what I would call it.

And look on the bright side. If worse comes to worse, I'm sure you will be reincarnated as something nice for your sacrifice to the earth-mother and wind-gods

Well, crap. :( My boyfriend is about 50 miles north of New Orleans and I've been worried about him all day. I talked to him on the phone earlier and he was off to go help his neighbors get ready to get out of there, but he said he doesn't plan on leaving. If he gets through this in one piece, I'm gonna kick his butt.
