View Full Version : What colors do you live in?

The color of a room really defines it's character, and can
have dramatic effect upon the temperments and emotions of
the people surrounded by it. Why not share the colors you
live in?
.
My living room is pastel purple. The walls, the curtains,
even the pillows. Green is the main color of my dining room,
two shades- mint, and hunter. The walls of my bedroom are
the color of lapis, with golden stars sprinkled across the upper
perimeter. My den is painted to look like the inside of a
granite cave: grey, black, and white speckled stone. The kitchen
is lemon and white, and the bathroom is textured earth-tones.
In all, I'd say I feel most relaxed bathed in the purple glow
of the living room, and most introspective within the shadowy
confines of the den. I find the bright, sunny colors of my
kitchen really energize me, and the natural earthy walls of the
bathroom are great for, well, when "nature calls".
.
So how about you? What colors do you live in, and how do they
affect you? Why did you choose them, and what would you like
to change?

Well I can't comment too much, since I dont own my own home and the only room I've had any say in are my bedroom and the living room (lounge).
The living-room/lounge is a cool sponge-effect ice blue with artsy fleur de lys, and a small amount of silver writing on it. The carpet is a slightly warmer dark blue, and to warm the room up the sofas are covered in teracotta. It sounds like it doesn't work, but it really does look nice!
My bedroom (my sanctuary) is a warm sunshine yellow. It was quite expensive to decorate, because all the cheaper paint and paper was lemon yellow  which is a negative colour to surround yourself with and cause all kinds of problems in your third chakra. There is a warm orange border around the centre, and I have a lilac carpet to cool the room down a little. My bed is un-finished pine, with a yellow and orange bed-spread my sister gave me. My walls are covered in my own artwork (I'm my own biggest fan  ) and I'm in the process of making a gecko wall-hanging with some yellow, orange and purple silk which I bought in Cambodia :D
There's a picture of my bedroom wallpaper (you can just see the coloures around the edge of my painting) here:
http://www.mysticwicks.com/photoalbum/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=18189&pos=6
The carpet is roughly the same colour as the little lamp-lites you can see along the top of the wall :D
OH, the kitchen! I LOVE the kitchen, although it was my mother's project not mine - it's a similar sunshine yellow (I instisted she get sunshine, not lemon, although she's not People) with dark green tiles on the floor, a dark green work surface and multicoloured tiles just about the work-surface - teracotta, dark green, lime green, sunshine yellow. It's lovely, really cheerful :D

My ugly rental house has dirty pale-apricot walls and darker apricot doors.
I loathe apricot. I have always loathed apricot.
When I owned my apartment, I painted the bedroom, my sanctuary a deep avocado green, and only used lamps, never the overhead light. I had gorgeous brocade bed linen, and painted the words to a favorite Bronte poem on the wall above my bed.
I *loved* that room. One day, when I can afford another place, I'm going to paint that bedroom exactly the same color. Till then...apricot. Damn apricot.

When I repainted my bedroom, I did it lavender with a grey and lavender bedspread. I love it - it is so much more soothing than when I had it white and grey, or beige and rust.

We didn't have the money to paint this house, but if we own the next one I'm going to town on the colors. At the moment I content myself with fabrics in deep blues and greens in the bedroom.
We also have Tibetan prayer flags up in the office, which for those of you who don't know come in red, white, blue, yellow, and green.

my whole house has super short midnight blue carpet with little red, purple, orange and light blue design thingamabobbers in it. the walls are all bone colored. but we just moved here, i'm going to paint sometime... lol. i've been saying that for a month. my furniture is blue... kind of a steel blue color. white sheer curtains in the living room. maroon curtains in the kitchen. umm... i have paintings all over the walls. not by famous people, just by people i know. i dunno..... my house is pretty non-descript.

Our house is predominately a greyish-taupe color. Describing it is difficult, because it sounds icky. It's really not. It is a lovely color that changes whenever light hits it. It is on the darker side. It is inviting and serves as an excellent backdrop to make pictures and artwork really pop. Our master bedroom is a dark olive green that is textured. It is serene and comforting. We have a massive four poster/canopy bed with a beige brocade comforter, with burgandy and green pillows. There is an antique French armoire and an antique dresser in there as well. The woods are mellow, not dark. That bedroom is so relaxing. Our master bath is a sage green. I garden, so these colors reflect my love of the outdoors. Our upstairs gameroom is a very dark forest green. As we have just had it painted, I haven't done much with it yet, but am happy with the color. It clashes horribly with the taupe hallway though! :bug: I shall have to install some crown molding around the entrance to the room to separate the two colors and lessen the jarring impact. My oldest daughter's room is a lovely purple that we just painted. The youngest duaghter's room is apple green with flowers that I painted and ivy stenciled around the walls.
The guest room is a putrid shade of pink that we haven't had painted yet. I HATE that color. It reminds me of pepto bismol. :yikes:
Our kitchen has some navy paisley wallpaper, which is next on the list to be refurbished.
Overall, the themes seem to be shades of green, burgandy, and earth colors. It is restful and serene.
Whew! :)

Calyx, your place sounds gorgeous. There's something very soothing about green rooms, isn't there?
We've covered our ghastly apricot walls with armloads of posters and art, meters of black lace and old shawls, and it *still* peeks out and drives me insane.
I think it was the most popular color in the late 70's to 80's...every single rental house I've had...apricot. Every last one. The apartment I used toown was apricot when I bought it...a week later, it was green. Sea foam green in the living areas, and the avocado like I said in the previous post in the bedroom.
Next house I own, I want a deep dark burgandy dining room, and another dark green bedroom...and a room in sari colors.
Lots of dark, rich jewel colors with black as a background accent...many pillows, billows of fabric, mosquito nets on the beds....really decadent and hedonistic. :)

After Cambodia, mosquito nets just fill me with a feeling of paranoia - "what if there's a hole? There's a hole!! Oh wait, just a shadow..."
My bfriend comes out in ghastly lumps when he gets bitten, and even when hole-free, they still find a way in... :collapse:

My apartment is decorated in natural (beige/bone/sand) and secondary colors (greens, purples, and oranges). All of my furniture, except my altar-in-progress, is of beech, oak or birch. Might sound boring to others, but I find these colors soothing and harmonious.

My house (which I just bought this summer) is BEAUTIFUL! The living room is a nice golden yellow! It has the original oak woodwork, with piano windows and the most gorgeous mission-style door!
My dining room (which functions as my computer room...) is RED! It has textured wallpaper above a plate rail and plaster texture under...all RED...well, the woodwoork is dark oak...
These two rooms really made it hard NOT to buy the house! LOL!
All the other rooms are still plain...

We live in an apartment, so our colors as far as walls go are pretty neutral--white everywhere except for the beige bathrooms. We could paint, but we'd have to re-paint whenever we leave and it's jsut not worth the hassle with as much as we tend to move! So for now, the color of our stuff pretty much goes with the flow of that....white sofa and papastan chair with a couple blue pillows. In our bedroom, we have a blue comfortor that has some Chinese print on it.
I'm hoping once we get a house, we can do more in the way of decorating!!

My living room is a silver-teal on two walls and cream on the other two walls. The teal walls have a cream strip on the top and bottom.
My computer room is two shades of green. I lighter green on top and a darker green (close to hunter) under the chair rail. I can't remember the names from the paint chips.
My guest bedroom is a lighter blue on top and a dark celtic grey under the chair rail.
My bedroom is a silver purple and another purple that actually didn't dry the color I wanted it to. My ugly bedroom is temporary.
The bathroom is a silver purple.
The kitchen is a cream, soon to be a deep golden yellow.
The family room is a cream with white washed oak panelling on the bottom.

Well, as we're temporarily living with the in-laws we only have two rooms that we could decorate, but the were kind enough to let us paint them.
The "media room" where we have our computer, tv and video games is this lovely bright green name Lettuce Alone Green. It's gorgeous, very bright and cheerful. On the closet doors which were also painted I stenciled some bright pink, almost fuschia, roses alternating with white daisies tinged with the same pink at the base of the petals. The drapes are navy. And while it doesn't sound like those colors would work together, they look great. The bedroom, is unfortunately a mish-mash and doesn't go at all with our comforter and bed decor. However the walls are a bright sunny yellow that is very energizing. But it seems to make it impossible to sleep in because the light just reflects of the walls and wakes you.
Once we are able to purchase our own house I have all sorts of ideas about what I'm going to do. The bedroom will be decorated to go with our bedding which is oriental inspired. The walls will be a deep red/burgandy shade with metallic platinum/gold blossoms painted over top and the carpet will be a goldish taupe that is in the comforter.
The dining room will be orange on top with white beadboard along the bottom half with dark wood furniture. Would prefer hardwood floors, but barring that will probably be a white carpet. While not usually a fan of white, I think it would look very nice together.
Haven't planned out the other rooms, but I always have ideas floating around in my head. I'm sure some room or another will be done in greens as it's my favorite color. Perhaps the living room (as opposed to family room, I want both. Will finish basement if I have to in order to get both), with leather furniture along with dark wood furniture and trim.

My bedroom at home is done in white, pink, purple and lilac. It sound like a bit of a mish-mash but it's really nice. We have wooden floors throughout, a really warm cherry colour downstairs and a lovely pale beech upstairs. The lounge is done in autumn colours with dark wood furniture. It's really warm and inviting.

my walls, which i don't have control over, are dirty, standard boring white. floors are sort of pale beige with black speckles, except in the hallway, where they are horrid medium gray tiles with ridges that make noise. bathroom tiles are so non descript i can't remember what color, and the shower has a disgusting gray floor to match the hallway with industrial (read: somehow dirty and depressing) bright blue stalls.
i have burgundy rugs with a golden-brown fleur-de-lis pattern, and also a black velour-ish one, on my bedroom floor. black sheets, with satin pillowcase & comforter that reverse from black to gold. i also have an Irish flag (green, white, orange) on my wall. so what if it clashes? i need to look up the florida state flag, which it has been mistaken for, along with canada's. :whatgives

The living room walls are a deep, warm brown with a big sectional wraparound couch in (you guessed it) shades of brown, with lots of pillows. The kitchen is a mustardy yellow with painted grapes and leaves in various spots and on one wall theres a garden arch. The office is a red, real, vibrant red, and hasn't been decorated (I have everything for it, we just have to build some bookshelves). That's all that's done so far. The bathroom will be this awesome grey/green that matches the marble in the countertops and the 'wicca' roomm will have forest green walls one of these days. Oh, and the bedroom will be decked out Egyptian style..........

my bedroom is cranberry (or merlot if you go to lowe's) with pale white trim
my guest room is the same pale white as the trim above but with dark green/brown/olive trim.
my hall is a grey/green color with pale white trim
bathroom....well Skatha_mare has witnessed this mess...currently its primer white, was yellow, blue, pink, green...can you tell i was stripping the bathroom? bathroom will be pale blue with dark blue, heather blue and white tiles when i get around to finishing it.
the living room has that awful wood panelling that makes it really dark in here....that will change in the winter....
the kitchen is a really pale yellow/warm white with white and blue tile for backsplash and a green/blue for trim.
laundry room is the same color, but different trim color (white)
my 3rd bedroom has that grey wood panelling that is peeling off the wall....i really want to strip that room!!!!

I live with my dad and everything in our whole house is beige.....with the exception of my bedroom. My room used to be a rec room but my dad wanted to steal the rec room and fill it with trains. So we came to a comprimise: I'd move into a significantly smaller room and let my dad have the rec room, if I could decorate any way I want. So I painted it lime green. :-)

Our walls are antique white,to my eye its almost a very soft yellow. Our carpet is very light gray(our steanm cleaner is constantly in use). I really love color and get so bored I decorate with whatever colors I feel like..it seems to work. Mostly green, blue, pink, burgundy, and purple. I collect fiestaware and instead of settling on one or two colors I use all of them..everyone has a different color plate at the dinner table. I'm thinking about painting the master bedroom and/or master bathroom lavender. Our landlord is wonderful and lets us do anything.

As I live with my parents, the first time round, I got no say. We recently repainted, and needless to say I had more say, but for ease I'm only going to comment on my room.
Which happens to be painted in two shades of purple. The ceiling and trim around the ceiling are white. Unfortunately my funiture is a little miss matched. Half of it is white, and the other half is stained a nice dark cherry (?) colour. The wood was originally pine, and my parents didn't really want to see nice pine chest of drawers ruined with white paint. It's not so bad. If I had the money, I'd have the sheets, blankets and stuff matching. Right now its a mix of purples, whites and pinks. With doesn't look too bad, really. It's rather eclectic, to say the least.

I just realized I haven't posted here yet! Eeek!
Well ... my office/altar room is the color of the current background for Mystic Wicks .. a rich, lovely violet. It's called Sorcerer. The living room is a rich hunter/forst green. The dining room and kitchen are a goldenrod hue .. not quite a sunny yellow, but close enough to brighten my mornings. Our upstairs bedroom is close to the same .. a bit more rusty, but very warm and cozy. And our remaining guest bedroom (I converted the first into the aforementioned office) is a lilac/wysteria purple .. very light, very delicate, but lovely.

that sounds fantastic, amberwolf!
the colours i live in are not my choice, but here they are:
living room: green walls, sky blue ceiling, brown beams. dark blue curtains but i want to change them for plain white ones.
bedroom: beige walls, black windows and blinds
kitchen: brown & beige tiles and beechwood, lino floor but we're going to take that out soon.
bathroom: boring white with a green ceiling
hall: (almost) flourescent yellow walls
if i had a choice, though, i'd either go crazy with the oranges, purples and reds like amberwolf, or i'd keep everything in beige and cream colors with loads of dark wood everywhere.
and i'd love to paint midieval (sp? :hairraise ) murals on my kitchen wall.

I've been temporarily living with my parents (for a long time) and can't paint the way I'd like to. But I have decorated with fabric. Right now, my bedroom is garnet and black. My daughter's room is mostly pink and purple. I am planning to paint the kitchen and dining room apple green and accent it with purple sheers. I have a collection of witches and witchy signs that I usually keep in the kitchen that it will match quite well. The living room will probably be a faux finish of various golds for a parchment effect... but I haven't made a final decision on that. My room will be done in light and dark grey, probably a large diamond design on one wall and another wall in garnet. My daughter's room will probably be sponged light and medium pink with large pink and purple diamonds on the long wall. If I move into the house I'm planning to live in, the bathroom will be really hard to paint. It's got high ceilings, a clawfoot tub close to one wall, and not a whole lot of space to get close to any walls with a ladder. If I can figure out how, I'd like to paint it white and periwinkle blue. There is a small hallway in the house, and it's already been painted pink and sage with a lattice border and ivy stencilled on by hand (I know, I did it). If it's not in bad shape, I may leave it that way.

We went a bit crazy with color when we painted our house last year, the result is that none of the rooms "flow," as they each have their own color-scheme.
The kitchen is a sunflower-ish color called Dalia.
The huge stand-alone cabinet that guards the kitchen is painted Tomato red on the outside, with the shelves being black. It's very cool and looks like a shadowbox.
The bathroom is green, kind of Granny Smith apple green. I love that room. The sink and towel cabinet are in maple, and everything else is white.
My dressing room is Bazooka bubble gum pink and very bright. I'm trying to think of a way to tone it down in there.
My bedroom is a very light purple called Imagine on 3 walls, and the wall that the headboard is against is Lapis Lazuli...it's a specialty paint that has sparklies in it, so it looks like the night sky.
The attic, which is the kids bedroom, has a grassy-green floor and yellow walls.
The living room isn't finished yet, but the walls will be a soft white called Moonshine, and dark red accents.

living room = black. it was a lovely shade of green, but i had some black left over and had the urge to paint... and did... it's not too bad with the victorian type furniture in the room, but when i move my own furniture back it'll be lightened up a bunch. but it's really cool to watch movies in there with the black walls. the room doesn't get used much during the day anymore though... it used to be our main room when it was green.
kitchen = purple. 'gothic grape' lol. i love it :D seems to make everyone feel kind of funky (in that silly kind of way)... the best conversations happen in my kitchen.
hallways (up and down) = a soft but still fairly vibrant yellow. it's a nice colour to see when i open my front door... makes me happy to be home!
Jake's room = "hulk" green. he chose it *shrug* it gives me a headache, but he likes it.
Juliet's room = burgundy at the moment (it was my bedroom for quite a while, the burgundy is left over from me), but we have a can of deep pink she picked out. it's called fuschia berry.
My room = black. when this room was the 'den' it was a grey-blue. i hated it. it felt dingy and dirty. i always wanted to try black and did when this became my room. i like it :) it's dark and kind of mysterious, which works out nicely in my bedroom ;)
upstairs bathroom = green with blue trim. kind of seventies. it's on it's way out.
downstairs bathroom = deep navy to go with the celestial theme.
all that said, i paint more often than most people. i've painted every room in this house... it was all done up in pastel colours when i moved in. i'm really not a pastel kinda gal. i love changing things and living in new colours. just blame the artist in me ;)

The entire color scheme of my house is natural. The outside is wood and beige/brown brick. My living room walls are beige, brick, and wood panel. My dining room, library, and master bedroom walls are green (I can't think of what type of green right now--there's a picture below, though none of the furninture is in the house now. It belonged to the people we bought it from). The walls around the stairs are the same green as well. The rest of the walls are beige.

Next house I own, I want a deep dark burgandy dining room, and another dark green bedroom...and a room in sari colors.
Lots of dark, rich jewel colors with black as a background accent...many pillows, billows of fabric, mosquito nets on the beds....really decadent and hedonistic. :)
You and I have some similar tastes--while we can't paint our walls (we rent), my favorite decorating colors are burgundy and hunter. My dishes are a ruby colored cut crystal, my tablecloth is an ivory linen-like material with pale pink cabbage rose print on it (very nice with the dishes), place mats and napkins are bugundy, and found prints to match the table cloth so now have a very decked out dining room.
Living room is Victorian style cabbage rose/calla lilly print on the sofa/loveseat/chair in a dark green/rose/rust mixture...bedroom is burgundy and green decor. I had a lovely burgundy bathroom set but got stupid and decided to go with blue and now I don't like it so need to change back.
I'd love to paint the walls ivory and do a woodland border around the ceiling.

Yes, do! I love fireplaces! My fiance and I were so determined not to buy one of the new houses out here (though we almost ended up building one). All of them now have gas fireplaces put in them. I can't stand them. I hate that fake blue gas flame and the fake logs. It just seems so...dead. We got so lucky when we found this house late last year. :D

Actually, realized I do have a picture or two (from past Yuletides). The one with the fire was taken in 2001, the one with Luna-kitty was taken in 2002, the one of our hardwood floors and tree (the fireplace would be to the left) was taken last year.

I love my room...It's blue, and fades from light sky blue at the bottom to dark almost-midnight blue at the top, like a sunset. There's a celestial kind of border around the top with these smiling suns and mons in a gold/bronzey color. And gold-ish curtains. It's really pretty. :loveduv:

Lets see... first of all, my hubby is a painter and I do murals. That said...
Our living room (20 foot high walls) is a color called "Morroccan Spice"- it's kind of a dull muted brick red- which was painted over hand applied spackle. It looks like deep clay walls that were hand done. The furniture is sage green and oak with earth tone pillows. There is a half wall of wood all the way around the room. The artwork on the walls are all paintings of Medieval scenes- also in earth tones.
The kitchen is part of the living room so it's also painted the same color- but the floor is honey oak and the counter tops (soon to be done) will be oak as well. One wall is covered with the baskets I weave. The master bedroom is lavender and yellow. The master bathroom is natural- the walls are sided like a house (except they are stained with poly). When we first looked at this house we thought the room was a sauna. The main bath is set up like a beach. We live on the beach so we thought we'd bring it home. there is a mural of the beach all along the bottom edge of the wall, the top edge is like the sky. the ceiling is also painted like the sky. I always paint my celings. One shade lighter than the walls makes the room look HUGE! optical illusions....
Anyway- my oldest sons room is midnight blue. (not as dark as it sounds) and the ceiling is a shade lighter so the room doesnt looks so dark. The other two have wooden walls as well- just like the master bath but it's tarred every once in a while so it looks like the inside of a ship. it even has a gunport with a real live block and tackle with a rope. The one window in the room has a Jolly Roger on it for a curtain. The 2 youngest LOVED Pirates of the Carribean!
The sapare room is painted like the ocean. The ceiling is a lighter blue than the walls but they blend into each other so that you almost can't tell where one ends and the other begins. There are even streaks of "light" in the walls to look like the light rays slicing through the water.
All in all my favorite room is the living room. It's soft and comforting and natural. I like bright vibrant colors, but I like them very earthy. the colors of fall. The beachy rooms are in the process of being changed to more earthy tones. Maybe I'll go from the beach theme to the woods... thats more me.
