View Full Version : Agnostic/atheists?

I dunno what I'm trying to say, so forgive me if I ramble on.

I'm confused as to where I stand religiously. I flounder back and forth between atheism and agosticism (is that a word? LOL) I personally believe that there are no gods, but I do believe there is more than "nothing" out there. I believe in energies of the earth and universe and spirits-ish type things. Which leaves me in a state of confusion, a quandary, if you will. It's also why I keep coming back to paganism and why I'm still a member at my atheist board (though they would laugh me into next week if I tried to talk about anything even remotely spiritual).

I understand that I'll never fit into anything organized (christianity, wicca, etc) and I'm okay with that. But the feeling that I just don't fit in anywhere does have me frustrated. I hate not having anyone to discuss my beliefs with.

So I guess the point of this thread is to look for someone to talk to. I know there has to be someone here who is agnostic/atheist. Yes? No? LOL

Please PM me or contact me on an IM.

You sound like you're more of an agnostic than an atheist. An atheist, in my understanding does not validate the belief in any higher power.

Perhaps you are like me. I believe that the collective unconscious is the force that humanity tries to label as god/goddess. We're all respecting the same force, just labelling it differently.

The collective unconscious is described as all consciousness that was, is and ever will be, as you cannot destroy energy, only transform it.

I am a Universalist.

And some days I am. When I say atheist I go by the dictionary to mean "beliving in no gods". Which is truly how I feel, enter the quandry I was speaking of. LOL I know, it's confusing.

Possibly. This isn't a concept I've thought much about and it's something I'll be pondering for a bit, I'm sure.

I am a Universalist.

I googled this and came up with Unitarian Universalist, which really didn't explain much. Should I dig deeper on this?

No, this is kind of my own term, although I think others use it.

I believe that the energy that mankind is trying to label as god is all the same, everyone is just using different names for the energy.

I accept and respect all religions and I look for the common thread in them all.

It boils down to You Are God/I am God/We are All God.

I know how you feel. I’m a Naturalistic Pagan – an “atheist” when it comes to personal gods (that you could chat with), but deeply spiritual. I find that I’m in a little atheist closet which is inside the broom closet, so I have to “come out” to my Pagan friends as an atheist, but I also have to “come out” to others as a Pagan! D ‘Oh!!

I see the universe as divine, and I love celebrating the wheel of the year holidays. For me, it is a balance. On one hand, I am spiritual & celebrate life, on the other hand, I am rational and don’t believe in anything without good (testable) evidence. I describe this a bit at www.naturalpagan.org.

I talk a bit more about it at this page: http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~leta/TREATISE/tjchap8.htm

Plus, there is a link to my homepage below in my .sig.

You aren’t alone! I’ve met many Pagans like us, some here on MW.

Au Contraire!! :blor:
I’ve found a spiritual home and many other Pagans like me at the Unitarian Universalist church (which you already stumbled upon). You are very lucky to live where there are about a half dozen of them within a few miles of your house! Here is a list.

http://www.uua.org/CONG/results.php?s_method=zip&zip=22150&radius=25&submit=GO%21

UUs love talking – that’s one of our main things – discussion of different spiritual views. Our main point religiously is that we respect all people, and that this respect is more important than doctrinal differences.

I know many UUs there who aren’t Pagan, but we all get along. Nationally, UUs are about half agnostics, with the other half made up of Pagans, Christians, Buddhists, etc.

Hey, in fact, the UU church near you has an big CUUPS group (a Pagan group). Here is their webpage:

http://www.uucava.org/MoonFire/index.html

They are probably a good place to start. Ask them about UU, ask them about their beliefs, ask them what they think of your beliefs, and overall, ask them if they’d like to discuss spirituality.

May the stars light your path-

I do believe there is more than "nothing" out there. I believe in energies of the earth and universe.... Just like you, my partner says things just like this and considers herself an Atheist.

Don't make the mistake of interpreting God by the beliefs of others. To me, the word God represents a divine power, or as you put it "energies of the earth and universe".

Just something to think about.

Old thread! :awilly:

I'm confused as to where I stand religiously. I flounder back and forth between atheism and agosticism...
I personally believe that there are no gods, but I do believe there is more than "nothing" out there.
I believe in energies of the earth and universe and spirits-ish type things.
Which leaves me in a state of confusion, a quandary, if you will.
I understand that I'll never fit into anything organized (christianity, wicca, etc) and I'm okay with that. But the feeling that I just don't fit in anywhere does have me frustrated.

Wow. That basically sounded like it was coming out of my mouth!

Same here. No gods, but I believe in spirits and energies. And an afterlife (reincarnation) and other things hard atheists don't believe in.
I consider myself agnostic right now, but there are times when I feel like an atheist.
I consider myself a pantheist to a degree, but not all of my beliefs fit into the pantheist ideal.
So I'm just...hovering.

I understand that I'll never fit into anything organized (christianity, wicca, etc) and I'm okay with that. But the feeling that I just don't fit in anywhere does have me frustrated.

Same here. It is quite frusturating.:awilly:

I'm an agnostic. I view my 'religion' more as a philosophy.

Interesting topic. I find that I, too, have a hard time defining my beliefs. Try as I might, I just can't quite bring myself to believe in any "gods" yet I feel there is a divine power out there. I guess I'll go label-less because I don't feel I fit into the agnostic or atheist categories :).

Wowza~! :spaceman:

I've come along way since, uh, Oct 2004. Nothing has really changed except that what I wrote isn't confusing to me anymore.

The only god that I feel truly atheistic about is the god of the Bible. In my own little pea-brain, I am 100% sure that he does not exist. I feel like there is something at work in the universe. I'm just not quite sure what it is. It could be wishful thinking on my part, or not. But I like to think I'm approaching it with a mind open to possibilities.
