MM all-
I would really like to make my own wand but I don't want it to turn out looking like a 5 yr olds art project. I haven't found any books on the procedure for making them, only the different supplies you can use. Does anyone have any idea where I could find good, easy to follow instructions? :weirdsmil

Making a Wand for High IQ Persons:
1. Enter forest.
2. Pickup fallen branch or cut from desired tree.
3. Sandpaper it.
4. Call it a wand.

Okay so what about this type of wood means this, and this needs to be engraved on it etc, etc.??

I used a branch from an oak tree,i asked permission first and then left an offering.
You can engrave it with whatever feels right to you, personalise it so it feels special to you.

Okay so what about this type of wood means this, and this needs to be engraved on it etc, etc.?? Nemme and nemme! Wood is simply so, it means nothing. If you want to relate it to your Gods then perhaps choose one that has them written all over it ... (ie. choose one that reminds you of your God(s))
As for what needs to be engraved: perhaps the name of the wand, if you are giving it a name. But nothing other than that. You might want to put the names of deities that you seek on it. Don't put any anglo-saxon runes on it though, those are pure evil lol jk

I found a lovely piece of oak which had fell in sherwood forest and i thanked the tree and left an offering and brought the branch home stripped and sanded it down the i bought some of the tiny faery crystals and glued themm along the length of the wand and i have an amythest pointed crystal at the tip and at the bottom i have ribbons wound round the end of the branch:)

I had a wand from the branch of my favourite climbing tree- it was also my favourite kind of tree, which only grows (that I've seen) on the island I visit every summer. Arbutus. They're beautiful, and remind me of my favourite place on earth...
But I don't have it anymore. ;) I need a new one.

namaste,
that depends a bit from your tradition.
different trees have different meanings.

5 year project eh? Well my wand has only been in the creative stages, all of 1 and a half years. See, I know how I want it to end up, but stringing beads is a tedious artform in itself.

I have about a dozen or so. They are all of different types of wood from various trees. I find them or they find me although I rarely looked for them. Some were cut from a tree, some were found on the ground. They get cleaned up, bark (if any) stripped off and then sanded. In sanding I just go with the general shape of the piece. I leave them unembellished, no carvngs, marking or add ons. Generally I like them about the length of my forearm and hand. My favorite is a piece from a still living willow tree that was blown apart by lightning . I have my eye on a branch of my neighbor's apple tree, if they prune it I'll ask for the piece.

Once you find the right piece of wood, ask it what it would like for decorations. Talk to it... sleep with it. Then you'll know. :)

Hazel is good for a basic rune-of-the-mill wand :)

I have made several wands, I used to have a cork skrew willow in my back yard, it died a couple years ago, but I kept a few lovely branches. I just made two of them this past month, one for a sister and one for a daughter. If you would like I would be happy to make you one of these and send it to you. I like the cork skrew willow, its not straight like most people like, but to me the spiral covers more area than a straight line. If you would like one of these wands let me know.

I wanted a willow wand for sometime...just seemed like it was "right" for me. Of course, willow trees aren't that common in my neck of the woods. But, one morning after a stormy night, I was walking the dog, and decided to take a "different path"....one that led me to a beautiful willow tree, and a fallen branch that was just perfect. Took it home, peeled off the bark, sanded it, dressed it with the last of my sandalwood oil, attached a quartz point to one end, and a bit of purple trim.....and, voila....a nice wand, a real mess all over the living room floor (sanding and peeling should have been done outside I guess), and ultimately, a very satisfying end result.

Sorry to hi-jack your thread but I decided to ask here....
What element does a wand represent? Air or fire?
Because for me, it's air, and I use a long feather I found long time ago.

I live in Florida, and there aren't many varieties of trees here. Just palm trees, and some I don't know the name of. Is it possible that I can just get (I, of course, will ask permission first) a branch and it will be easy to peel off the bark? And what kind of offerings should I leave? Thanks! :achug:

WHy take off the bark? If it's not soiled or wet or peeling off anyway, I say leave it on. It will feel more natural. I plan on doing that with a branch I find to use as a wand once I decide I want something other than my feather.(read my previous post if you haven't)
