I'd like to teach a class, or most likely two seperate classes, on these subjects. Anybody interested? Otherwise, I'll just keep using guerrilla tactics and posting little bits of info on various threads.

I, too, would be interested.

I have a deep suspicion my grandma-in-law practiced Santeria, but sadly she passed away before I worked up the nerve to ask her. I would like to learn more about it.

Ooohh...I'd be interested in a voodoo class and a Santeria class...probably more voodoo than Santeria but both out of curiousity. Dunno much about either. :)

I'd be interested in both! How extensive/time consuming are you thinking?

I'd definately be interested. It would be nice to have more of an understanding of what my neighbors practice. Here in South Fla, there's a little wee bit of Santaria :)

I'd be interested, but I'd also be interested in your qualifications (no offense intended... something I want to know of any teacher is where they are coming from regarding the subject... particularly in areas I don't know much about.)

Sure thing! That's definitely something I'm interested in but know next to nothing about!:spinner:

Thank you, everyone, for your interest in this. The class will be on Santeria and the African religion it comes from, called Ifa. Voodoo is different enough from Santeria/Ifa and complex enough to deserve its own class so I'll do that, maybe, sometime after The Santeria/Ifa class.

How much time will it take? I don't know. I'm putting to gether a lesson plan and I'll post it at the end of the week (if it's approved). I was thinking about posting a new lesson topic every 5 days in honor of the 5-day calendar of the Yoruba people(who practiced Ifa). If I do that, based on my current class outline, the class will last 60 days. I don't know if that is too long or not. Let me know what you think. Also, I'm trying to make the class more interactive, not just a lecture/discussion group, but I'm not sure how. Working on it. But what I come up with may change the time frame.

My qualifications. In this religion there are "Houses" much like other religions have churches or temples. I have been practicing Ifa for 10 and a half years, but I don't belong to a House. I work with a local House sometimes and the man who runs it offered to train me to be his "right hand" the day he met me. He said I have a lot of power. But they use animal sacrifice at this House and I can't/won't take part in that. And I still haven't found a House that doesn't use animal sacrifice so I have never joined a House. Still, I am given a good amount of respect in the community. Just this year I have been invited to visit houses in DC, N. Carolina, and W. Virginia, and I've been flirting with a Voodoo house in New Orleans for awhile now. I will most most likely join one or more this year or next.

Because I have done this for so long mostly on my own I have sort of developed my own system. What I do is technically not Ifa because I don't use animals. And it's definitely not Santeria because I don't use the saints or any other Christian iconography. But in the class I will discuss my methods and the traditional methods. There is a young but growing movement in the tradition, as well as in Voodoo, that is moving away from animal sacrifice. I am one of the forerunners of this growing trend. I get into debates with the traditionalists but they cannot deny that the bloodless methods work.

So, I don't know, does that count as qualifications? If not, sorry, that's all I've got. I hope to be organized by the end of the week and ready to go maybe next week.

Any more questions or comments? Anyone? Anyone? Just let me know. Thanks.

Ok, here's my plan. I condensed things a little bit to get it done in 6 or 7 weeks. It won't be graded, but more of a discussion group. I will post the intro to the class this week. This will be on Santeria/Ifa only, Voodoo will be later in the year. However, I'd still be happy to take Voodoo questions in PMs if you really need answers now.

Sorry for the delays but I'm very busy these days Joined another band, taking a shot at acting, writing constantly, editing a magazine, and a bunch of other stuff I can't even think of right now, BUT I love you guys and I'm here to serve this community so I'll make plenty of time to do this class once it starts. It'll be fun. Maybe even informative.

I would be very interested, someday. I am so excited about all the on-line opportunities and what to give each class the attention it deserves. I am taking one on line via Cherry Hill, and one through here, and would need to wait for one to end. Basically if you do them on an ongoing basis, you'll see me in one eventually. Also I am more interested in Santeria, so I think you should teach Voodoo first ;)

How do the classes work on MW?
Are they through email or a chat room?

I would like to see the Voodoo discussions or class continue. I love to get different perspectives from other areas since it varies from one place to the next.

Yes. Why?

That was a poor answer to Dragoncrone's questions. Rude. I apologized to her. I apologize to anyone else who was offended, if anyone. I get a little edgey, hostile, and aggressive sometimes. Too much caffiene.

The answers to her questions are on threads in the CoT. If anyone has more questions, please refer to those threads, post a question here, or PM me. I'm open to answering any questions about my religion or about myself in regards to my religion.

And if you're interested in this stuff, you should check out the CoT anyway. I'll be posting more topics in there soon.

Thanks.

In all fairness, I should have elaborated upon my question a bit more.
I recently had the opportunity to attend a presentation on voodoo, by a woman who (long story short) ended up going to Haiti to be immersed in voodoo - after she discovered that she had Creole lineage.
Her journey to her chosen path was fascinating, and made me curious about how other teachers were drawn to their craft.

I have always wondered what Santeria was (I may be ignorant, but I am a curious ignorant). Count me in! That is if it is not too late...

Darn me for not noticing how old this thread is...
