View Full Version : Flar's in the Hospital

Flar's Freyja
October 21st, 2004, 11:18 PM
He was admitted today. For those who aren't aware, he has had cystic fibrosis since birth. He typically goes in to the hospital about 4 times a year for a good antibiotic flush and is usually a bit sicker than usual by the time he gets there.

The past few weeks have not been good. If his heart rate goes up at all, he can't breathe and has had to ask for help. More than being scary - he just absolutely hates any loss of independence. Part of the reason he's lived so long is because he has not succumbed. He's a fighter and has always said he will not give in to this awful thing.

I've been very worried and scared. My hope that they'll fix him may be false, since he's lived longer than most with this disease already. My own health hasn't been good for the past year and I've felt terribly guilty that I can't give him the care he needs. This surgery should help, but right now I'm still having to take it slow.

Any energy, candles, prayers would be so appreciated.

Wow, thanks again for all the sweet replies. I talked to him a few times today, he sounds good. Dorky sense of humor as usual. I asked if they were fixing him up and he said he got a new leg...... :nicetie:

That could change, the antibiotics have made him really sick before but not for the past few visits. At least I know that Semele's up there tonight and he won't be too lonely.

You guys are great and so appreciated.

At least I know that Semele's up there tonight and he won't be too lonely.

Lonely? He has no time to be lonely. He was far too busy ordering me around. "I need oxygen, can I have some water, my eyeall fell out, my IV is beeping, sing me a song!" Ok so he never wanted a song, but he was up until 0500 yakking.

He seemed to be feeling pretty good. We laughed a lot and we talked about Halloween which is over a week away and he said something about maybe still being there, so maybe he will stay long enough to get better this time! Last few times he was checking out before his name on the board was dry. (Maybe since Freyja is "laid up" healing, he decided to do the same and then they can blow up balloons together when they are all better!

His only concern is Freyja and how she is doing! He is such a sappy sucker.

Freyja, take care of yourself and focus on getting better and he will do the same. We will take care of him and visit him frequently and I am sure my husband will stuff his gullett with vast amounts of raw fish.

Well, last night after his sushi yeilding buddies left, flar took a long nap, giving me time to catch up on all the work for my four other patients on the entire floor. Yeah..rough week end so far. (someone must have known I needed Flartime!) Then he was out at the desk where we discussed such fun topics as electromagnetic energy, brains, memory and who you are or where your memories go when you die, to me almost killing him (it always comes up) to what Winnie the pooh's last name was. It was great. We laughed a lot and he was out of breathe a lot.

I walked in on him blowing up a baloon...imagine my suprise! I was like.."Is Freyja coming?" He laughed and explained to his dumb nurse how that was good exercise for folks with CF. I will share that with others..in fact I already did! That's why we keep him around on the kids floor..he is teaching them how to do things and be old and cranky like him. He commented on how the RT, Chris, used to play chess with him..thirty years ago! Damn!

Overall, I think he is doing well. He is very tired and having some headaches. His oxygen levels are good and he is up moving so I think he has it under his control. Thanks to all the boosts and prayers from here no doubt. I am headed back tonight with some decent snacks for him because we have nothing good to offer him and he is so pathetic with those big eyes asking for snacks. Lots of Pepsi because he drives me nuts going downstairs for pepsi all the time. Also some strawberry banana yogurt and sliced kraft cheese. Hey...I don't pretend to understand him, I just think he is fun to hang around with!

{{{Semele}}} And I appreciate your donation of groceries! His cheese and Mountain Dew addiction is a major drain on the checkbook when I am working! I did buy him some movies today, Walgreen's had one of his favorites for $3.99. That's another addiction of his - I always say he can't leave me any money but I can open a goddamn video store, lol.

Keep it coming {{{MW friends}}} He is still using oxygen and I hate that. It's just so dang obvious :( I can't sleep up there since my incision is still pretty painful. We've been together 24/7 and I think we need a little break, although he doesn't agree. But days are coming where that won't be possible, so I'm making sure I have enough energy for when those days do come.

I think this guy represents the human struggle to grasp that which is just out of our reach and then we get it and look down suddenly realising that we simply cannot grasp the concept and live it at the same time. We need a friend. Then we could stand on their back and snatch it down to earth..whatever "it" is. Or maybe it is just a smiley trying to reach a strawberry, like grasping at sraw.....s.....bery or something.

:hugz: and energy and lots of positive thoughts for Flar and Freyja. :hugz:

Pooh Bear's last name is....uh I think I will wait and let him tell you! Heh!

Also see if you an figure out which personality disorder we labeled each character with!

I think Mol is going to take Trey for a visit later today. They both keep asking about each other. ;) Trey thinks Flar is his age!

Okay, I'm not going to look because I'm sure somebody posted the answer. Is Pooh's last name Sanders? Isn't that what's over the door of his house? Anyhow.

Personality disorders (well, more like psychological problems, because personality disorders are specific things, but anyhow :P ) ...

Rabbit - OCD (Okay, that IS a personality disorder. ;) )
Tigger - ADHD
Eeyore - Chronic depression
Kanga and Roo - Far too normal :p
Pigglet - Hmmm. Agoraphobia, maybe?

No, wait...I'm remembering a scene from Charlie Brown where Lucy is counseling Charlie Brown and she says, "Pantophobia. Do YOU have pantophobia, Charlie Brown?" And Charlie Brown says, "What's that?", and Lucy says, "The fear of everything!" and Charlie Brown screams, "THAT'S IT!"

That must be Pigglet, too.

EDIT: Interesting! I just looked it up, and pantophobia is the fear of everything, while pantaphobia is a "dangerous absence of fear."

Don't mind me. I'm just amusing myself and giving Flar and Freyja and Semele more stuff to talk about. :D

The winnah was Rick! Come on down and claim your prize. An all expense paid trip to SJMC to spend the evening with a handsome, clever dream date! A delightful culinary treat from the cafeteria which will likely have jello. A soft ambiance of beeping iv's and call lights and the pleasant aroma of aresolysed antibiotics that make your eyes tear up. Ah, the romantic fog! Enjoy!
I want pictures of them running down the halls in butt-flap gowns:rollingla

Well......we saw the doctor on Thursday and he said, "Let's put it this way. If you applied for a lung transplant, you'd be accepted."

Which translates to - he's not doing so good. With CF, they don't accept people for transplants until they don't have much time left. 39 years of his poor lungs working against CF is taking its toll.

He doesn't want a transplant for many reasons, and it's not up to me to give ultimatums. It's his life and his decision. I did, however, ask him if he planned to tell St. Peter that he's a little early because he doesn't like to drive to Oklahoma City.....

I do wish he'd at least get on the waiting list, because I know my baby. He loves life and if it comes down to having a transplant or dying, he will probably change his mind.

His doctor's been wrong before, and I'm hoping that he is again. Flar's been very sick and that last fiasco of a hospital stay did him more harm than good, I think. He has the strongest spirit I've ever known and I know he'll fight with all he's got. But the sad reality is that our bodies give out whether we want them to or not, and sometimes there's no fighting it because we can only take so much.

Sorry - I just had to get that out. I can't imagine my life without him and although I entered into this relationship with no illusions, I will never be ready to let him go. I know that you all are always thinking of him and it is very much appreciated. Blessed Be.

Thank you it is nice to know that one is appreciated. I haven't been around as long as most of the regulars have. I have watched as Flar went into and came out of the hospital, and wanted to send energy for him. You have answers for my questions where we have crossed paths. I have seen your handfasting pictures, and feel like I probably know you better than you know me. I just love the folks here, and like to help when I can.

_catroll_ *Sending energy to you and your husband*, will light candles for both of you. Stay positive, you and your husband are both Warriors of Life!! His work here on this plain is very important or he would not of survived his illness as long as he has. _firedevil tell your husband to keep fighting and we will all send energy from our little part of the world.

Walk in Peace :D

:huddle: I am sorry that you have to go through hun love and energy to you both .... just a thought though ... hubby was born with a Heart defect and it was not his fault does that mean he deservers to be on a heart transplant list more or less than someone who clogged their heart with big mac's everyday for 50 years ... Flar has had cystic fibrosis since birth so does he deserver a lung transplant more or less than someone who smoke 2 packs a day and was careless with their lungs .... just my personal opinion since it was due to no fault of his own ...I feel the Dr should at least try to do something .... Dr should try and do more for those with Congenital defects and for those that are in the condition they are in due to abuse make them wait a bit longer ..... Candle lit for you both .... :huddle:

{{{{WJ}}}} Thanks so much, I know you and yours have issues of your own. I think the issue is not so much as whether someone deserves one as it is that lungs and surgeons are so scarce. I do question why they feel that someone has to be at death's door in order to get the transplant - unless it is that trying to survive on one's own organs may be less strain on the body since there are so many risks associated with transplants.

He could explain it to you better - the drugs involved in maintaining the transplant have many side effects, among them making diabetes worse because they mess with blood sugar. And Flar HATES low blood sugar episodes. He's already having to stick himself twice a day, takes numerous drugs and breathing treatments - I don't blame him for not wanting to add to that.

He is strong, so strong. I'm hoping that he has many years left before he is actually at that point. But I do wish he'd at least get on the waiting list just in case!

Freya,

I hope that he is doing better soon. I will light candles for you both nightly. Healing energies have been sent your way as well. I do know that without you he would be lost - at least that's the feeling I get. Hang on to each other and he will pull through. I know that with all of the energy sent to him from this group, he will be feeling better soon. Please make sure and keep us updated as to his condition.

May the God and Goddess watch over you both,
-Isis
