I was reading in a post and for the life of me I can't remember who did it but they spoke of a familiar. So my questions are as follows.
What is a familiar??
Do they find you or you find them??

Yah...know...I am at a loss for words on how to explain this...perhaps someone can shed some light for you....or give me a bit and I will explain it. LOL!

I guess a familiar is like a "familiar spirit". These can be animal companions, or spirit animals, or just familiar spirits. You can find them, or they can find you, but you know when you have found them. There is a certain feeling that you get when you find each other, something like a meeting of soulmates. That's just my take on it...

Well, now see I was thinking about something long and drawn out...but that was to the point. Short and sweet. Thanks Kaylara!

Well, seeing as how I do not presently have a familiar, and have only the experience of others to go on, I explained it the best way I know how. I have had two cats that I felt particularly close to, but both of them departed from me shortly after our meeting.
Hence, a short explaination, because I know a little about it, but not enough to go on and on about it. :)

I don't think cats are familiars. More like peculiars. LOL! :D

A friend f mine is totally convinced that cats are aliens come down to observe the human race. In fact, she's found out that all cats are decended from the Abyssinian (think Bast) in Egypt. Pretty cool, huh? :D

AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH? Somebody should start a new thread on stupid cat tricks.

Do you mean to trick the cat? Or when the cat tricks you? That happens to me all the time.

Personally, I wouldn't keep a cat if you paid me. They just sit and stare at me. They look at me with that look that says that they know something that I don't. It just creeps me out. *shudders*
But I have two familiars. One is a wolf that helps me in meditation and my magical work. The other is the spirit of my twin sister that died shortly after we were born. I've talked to her since as long as I can remember. My mom used to try to tell me that it was just an imaginary friend when I was a kid, but I knew better. How many imaginary friends would get you in trouble just because it was funny to them?!

...seems to be my down side...
Familiar n. - a close friend or associate.

Shouldn't this go under Shamanism.
My "Power Animal" is a Familiar - The Hummingbird.
What is your power animal, All?
And why, do you feel it has found you?

I've been thinking about that one a lot lately, rantnraven. I finally asked it to show itself to me. Turns out it's a lion. Well, I've never felt anything in particular about that animal so I asked for confirmation. (I do that a lot.) It came out that I have a lot of Leos in my life and it has usually been a Leo who showed up to rescue me whenever I need it. Trickster again! He loves to play jokes like that on me! He does it every time I start taking myself too seriously.
I don't think we have only one spirit animal helper though. I think they're like angels. There will be one there when you need it and it could take any form. Before I moved here, I lived in a place where there were lots of hummingbirds and ducks. They came every day to lift my spirits. One hummingbird in particular, whom I named "the mess sarge," would hang around on the perch near the feeder and talk to me through the window after he finished feeding. He took care of the others too, raising a ruckus when the feeder was empty until I went out and filled it.
Here in Sacramento, I enjoy the gifts that the crows bring me - such as bits of bright colored paper, plums, and pecans that they stole from somewhere. They like my yard because I usually make a garden so the dirt is soft enough to dig in.
One year I had a couple of doves who made their home in my garden, They actually followed me around cooing and picking bugs out of the freshly turned dirt when I worked in the garden.
One thing to keep in mind when you're trying to attract spirit animal helpers is to make 'your place' an inviting place for them to be.
