The house I live in is a duplex. I am renting to own. My "landlady" lives next door.
We are having some problems with woodpeckers pecking on our house! :geez:
We have columns near our front doors with over hangs made of wood.
The little bugger has made a hole on my column, the size of a quarter, and on my neighbors picture window about the same size.
I have never heard of a woodpecker pecking on a house. It is very distracting. We live in a rural type of area.
HELP!!
Any suggestions????

Unfortunately, no suggestions. We get a lot of woodpeckers here, too. Last year, our landlord (who lives in the garage apartment attached to the house) had to fill in a whole bunch of holes that the little buggers had made in the walls outside his windows.

Thanks anyhow.
I'll see if any of my bird-loving friends know anything.

Okay, here's what two of the people I asked (who both tend to know a lot about birds) said:
Actually, I'm wondering if the presence of woodpeckers might not be an indication of some insect infestation of the wood. Might be a good idea for the person to have someone take a look. WP's aren't interested in the wood, but the insects it harbors.

That is a possibility, which is what I was about to say. You could have termites, for example.
The other possibility, according to a friend of mine who is the leader of the Foothills Bird Club and a member of the Carolina Bird Club said they often do this to announce themselves since they posses no song and to mark their territory.
In the case of the former, removing the infestation might work are detouring them from your property. In the case of the latter, there is no much you can do. There are birds of prey which are the natural enemy of woodpeckers, but inviting one of those onto your property can highly difficult-if not impossible for the most part to achieve unless you work with them in some fashion. You could, however, buy an owl decoy he said, and my mother bought one not too long ago for aesthetic purposes that is solar powered. Before this we had many woodpeckers announcing themself around the clock and now I have never heard one since.
You could try to approach the situation magically, since there are few practical solutions it would seem. Banishing them from your property, for example, or working something to repel them. You could include a picture of a woodpecker since obtaining a feather-while preferable-would be difficult.

I was struck with a bit of inspiration.
If you're not averse to working with animal energies, you could invite the energies of a bird of prey onto your property as an astral guard, to watch over it and protect it from the maniacal peckers as well. I've done this before in in other scenarios for very different reasons, but I see no reason why this would not work.
Of course, the astral guard will want something in return. Often merely acknowledging it each day or speaking to it through prayer will be enough. Sometimes a small section of your altar or a mini-altar dedicated to it for as long as you wish to keep its presence a part of your life is more appropriate, and that can be adorned with feathers of the bird, pictures or whatever else you feel may honor the animal's spirit.
I know many people dislike having to resort to magic to solve most of life's problems. I personally do not, but with so few mundane solutions available for this problem it would seem only logical to at least attempt approaching it from a magical angle.

Yeah, my parents, when we had a house in the woods, bought a fake owl thing (I don't recall what exactly it was) to scare them away and it worked pretty well.

"The woodpecker pecked on the outhouse door..."
He's certainly looking for something to eat. Maybe a bird feeder with nuts might be an alternative attraction. I certainly get woodpeckers coming to mine over the winter.

yep, the owl's work.
You might try the local co-op, or a sporting store to see if they might have one.
And yeah, most of the time if they peck the house, i.e. then there's proably termites...
