Presuming you are using a quartz crystal, pointing downward, dangling from a silver chain, this is how it goes:

Method #1

For yes/no answers only;
a) circling either clockwise or counterclockwise~~YES
b) moving from side-to-side~~NO

or:

Method #2

For yes/no answers only;
a) clockwise~~YES
b) counterclockwise~~NO
c) side-to-side~~No Answer Available

Use the one you fell most comfortable with, it may take a few tries.

As to anwers to other types of questions, this will come from your using the pendulum and attuning yourself to it. You will know when it feels right. It is a very powerful tool when used with the subconcious mind.

Hope this helped!

Thanks a bunch. That is exactly what I was asking.
I have only ever heard of method 1, but i have only ever seen it using it to determine the sex of children. Hey it works!! It tells all... Use it all the time on me and friends and it has worked every time. (tee-hee)
I was suggested by a friend that I use a pendulum to start out with to attune myself. The only thing I was unsure of what which swing meant what.
Alas though, thanks to you, I can now work with it.

Thanks BUNCHES!!

From what I have learned,you are supposed to ask the pendulum:What is yes?and what is no?.Whatever way the pendulum moves for each of these questions is what you should go by!!!

I have heard of that method as well...but have never used it. Isn't that the beauty of the craft? We are all so deversified in our ways, that we arrive at the same solutions, using different methods of the same aparatus. Thanks for the input Moon!

Those of you that use pendulums...

could you describe the process? And the type pendulum you have? What kind of questions can you ask? Do you use your pendulum with some sort of board?

Inquiring minds want to know... :sunny:

My pendulum is a moss agate stone on a silver chain with a small, round moss agate at the other end of the chain. Sometimes I use mine with a board, sometimes I don't.

Honestly, you can use it for any type of question. You can even make your own boards for different situations. I have a really useful book called "The Pendulum Kit" by Sig Lonegren... it came with a small, cheesy pendulum, but the book is good. It has a whole chapter of dowsing charts, and another whole chapter of dowsing applications.

My pendulum is smokey quartz, linked with a silver chain & the top is a rose quartz. I made this myself. I really feel that your tools are more personal & magical when you make them yourself. I usually use it for making tough decisions...usually yes/no type question. I would sit quietly for a few minutes, thinking of the question, holding the pendulum in my hand. then I hold the rose quartz end in my right hand, hand the pendulum over my left palm & wait for the answer. I don't use it a lot...only for really toughies when I've weighed the choices & really can't decide which one's better.

I don't have a pendulum per se. I know they work wonderfully though. Before my first child was born, my boyfriends mother (at the time) used a needle on the end of a thread to predict my children. She said I'd have a boy, then a girl, then a boy, and finally boy/girl twins. Needless to say, she was right with the exception of the twins. I decided after my third that there was NO WAY I was having twins! hehe So, no excuses, use what you got! It works!

How exactly do you use pendulums? Do you just hold them and try and receive images and energy, like with stones or crystals? If you were trying to find someone and had a map, would it point to where the person was?

Feeling painfully stupid now. :D

Dria El
June 19th, 2001, 03:59 AM
Well, I've never actually done it myself but she (the lady who predicted my children) held it over the open palm of my hand. Rocking in one direction meant one thing, rocking in another direction meant another, and twirling in circles meant something else. I don't remember exactly what she said each meant (this was over 10 years ago). Oh, and it always stopped in between.

Btw, just an odd tidbit... she was Catholic. :)

My grandmother & one of my aunt's used the needle on the thread to foretell number & sex of one's children. They would suspend the needle over one's wrist above the pulse point. A back & forth motion indicated a boy; a circular motion meant a girl. And yes, the motion stopped of its own, momentarily, between "children" (they would also give opinions as to years between children, according to length of time between motions). It worked on me. Predicted a boy, a girl, & a boy. That's the number & order of the children I've fathered. There was a long pause between the last two; my youngest is 11 years younger than his sister. Kinda eerie, ain't it? :D

I have that kit too. I do use that cheesy brass pendulum, but the cord broke, so I have just strung some thicker cotten thread threw it.

I use it mostly for my chakras....make sure they are open and spinning correctly. But I do also use it for "Yes/No/Maybe" questions also. When I don't have the board/chart, I just draw a circle, divide it like a pie into 6th's and write yes in the top and bottom "slice" and no on the left and right...then the maybe goes in the two remaining.

Once, when I was checking my Heart Chakra, I was laying on my bed to do this....and the pendulum was swinging in a circular manner. ...it was so hypnotic! I actually saw the color from the chakra "shoot" up like a flame off my chest ...it was almost a florescent pink...I'm talking a really bright pink! The first time it happened it freaked me out! I thought I was seeing things and didn't know what it was (back in my ametur days)! lol :D So, I tried it again,....and sure enough it leaped up again. I tried to see if I could "see" any of my other chakras, but couldn't. I attribute that to the angle/tilt my head had to be in to see the lower chakras....and of course there was no way I could have seen my throat, brow or crown chakras. It was an awesome experience....first time I have seen the "colors" of the body!

Loopy,

You can hold the pendulum about a half an inch-inch above your "chart". I rest my elbow on the table so I'm not all shaky. ;) I don't see any images or wait for messages in the terms you are thinking of. Like above, with the chart, I hold the pendulum string/chain about 5 or 6 inches from the dangling pendulum, placing the point of the pendulum in the center of the chart. First I say "Show me yes" then I ask it to stop. Then I ask it to "Show me no"...then I ask it to "Stop". ...then the same with Maybe. You can ask any yes/no/maybe questions you want. There are other methods, but I can't find my book at the moment.
If I don't have a chart, I just hold it over my open palm, and ask it to show me yes, no and maybe.....this way I know what it is trying to tell me....then ask my questions. Yes could be circular swinging, no could be north/south swinging and maybe could either swinging up and either east/west swinging or circular swinging in the opposite direction of what Yes was.

That book sounds really good ~ do you recommend it as a really good one for Dowsing with because I havent got one on Pendulums yet?

Dagda ~ your chakra technique sounds really cool and powerful. I work with my chakras alot but have never dowsed to check on them before and I can imagine the colour flowing up the pendulum is really something ~ Ill give that a try when Ive got some time to myself :)

In the past I have just used my Pendulum for parcific questions for Yes, No or Maybe answers.. I first ask the Pendulum what is Yes, No and Maybe for it then focus all my energy and clear my mind before I concentrate on the question and watch which way the pendulum swings...Whe I first started I was amazing at the accuracy of my Pendulum ~ she is always right :)

Does anyone else know of other ways to use a pendulum?

Hi Rick although I havent read through everyones Replys

Ive used a pendulum a few times the one I used had a Quartz Crystal on a silver chain.

I generally asked it questions that could have a yes or no answer
I used my palm with the pendulum held in my other hand so that the pendulum started in the middel of the palm. and first ask it which way it will rotate for Yes and which for no then you ask questions.

Its kinda usefull for getting answers to questions you already in your heart know but havent come to accept yet.

Use it Dont use is ...

It's the only book/kit I have about pendulums. It's pretty informative and as Emerald said....it comes with a "cheesy" brass pendulum. ;) It's great for beginner's and it's the only pendulum I have at the moment. :D

I think the book was pretty well done....but mine is playing hide and seek with me....and I haven't really looked at it in over a year....just use the pendulum. :D

Ok, the energy from your hand runs down the length of the pendulum, so when u create a certain thought form, it affects the swing of the pendulum.

SigFire

Pendulums can be of almost any shape & within reason any size. The thread should be about 15 inches in length. It is essential that the pendulum be black or a dull colour, for ordinary purposes it should be of wood or ebonite, in fact any material that is a non conductor of electricity. Metal & bright colours are not suitable as they may produce special effects by acting as "samples " instead of being the medium between the operator & the "sample."
Hollow pendulums are used for special purposes, being filled with a small quantity of the substance sought, such as gold, silver, oil etc. The pendulum by itself can do nothing, you only have to suspend it from some inanimate object to prove this; it will remain stationary even if a railway engine is placed under it, but once it comes into contact with the human hand, a piece of metal the size of a pin head will bring it to life. The pendulum will do one of four things:
1. It will remain stationary;
2. Swing or oscillate;
3. Gyrate in a clockwise direction;
4. Gyrate in an anti-clockwise direction. Under certain conditions it will move in an
Ellipse

Hope its usefull.

This is why pendulum magic/divination is perfect for children to learn. I taught my boys when they were 4 and 3, respectively. Actually, they taught themselves. I heard them giggling one day, and saw them holding up a hematite I'd attached to yarn ~ it was swinging wildly of its own accord. So, I showed them what to do. :D

Hiya fellow pendulum swinging peeps!!

When you deliberately think the pendulum to swing in one direction or other it's called ideo-motor action. You don't think you are moving your hand but lots of little muscles secretly twitch away until your pendulum is swinging merrily. So when you use a pendulum to seek an answer you have to be carefull to only focus on the yes or no question, which can be very hard!

You can use pendulums like a dowing rod to find lost items. As I am a Gold Prospector I sometimes use it to find good rich ground on a map and then close in with a metal detector. I know some peope in the U.S that use pendulum, dowsing rods and a strange looking rod called a "doodlebug" (a dowel rod with a string of wire leading to a glass bottle with a cork stopper which has the mineral or oil you want to find, it operates like a witness)for mining companies. Archeologists are using dowsing clubs now to help in making finds too. Personally I use a plain wooden bob at the end of the string. I've used the same one for 14 years.

Here are a couple of experiments that are excellent. The first is for locating a lost object in the house. Draw a straight line around an inch long and hold your pendulum in one hand, set it swinging to and fro, now concentrate on the object you want to find and slowly turn your paper with the line on it. When the line is in the direction of the object it will start to gyrate. Try it, it works! The other experiment is with finding people. Just do the same thing. The only difference is, if the person is dead the pendulum will not gyrate at all. It is good to use on sceptics by asking them to name 3 people alive and one dead that you wouldn't know. When you tell them the name they are gobsmacked.

If you haven't heard of him already, why not look up books by Tom Lethbridge, he was a scientist who developed a very strong dowsing technique and used spells and standing stones in his work. Sadly they are hard to find now, libraries are the best bet.

Happy dowsing!

Jazzy!

Rick

...OK, being as serious as I can be... someone I knew made some dowsing rods from coat hangers, using copper tubing for "handles", & wiring small quartz points to the end. She would go around dowsing at people, & declaring whether their energy was balanced or not. One time she did this to me & said I was way out of balance, 'cuz the rods spread really far apart. I placed my hand between the rods, focused on the quartz tips & "pulled" the rods together (I did not physically touch them). For some reason, it scared her so badly, she never waved her dowsing rods around me again.

True story.

A simple way to start is with a ring if you wear one, run a string thru and let the ring be the weight that hangs down. You can use anything from corks, to stones your imagination is the limit. After you have it make 2 cards one with Yes and one with No and hold it over each card and let it show you what motion is Yes and what motion is no. Everyone has a little different response, some are back and forth or circle around, it doesn't matter just learn the difference of yours. Then ask Y/N questions. Make sure you ask one question at a time. "Should I move to Bermuda and work on a boat?" Maybe you should work on a boat but notmove to Bermuda, so ask each question.

Most importantly RELAX and enjoy your new tool.

Blessed Be!

MM, Mark -

I, too, use the Yes/No cards. Depending on what I'm doing will depend on what I use as a pendulum. As a general rule, I have an I Ching coin on a straw string. It's whatever works for you, though.

I usually set the mood with candles and an invocation to clear the room of any unwanted energy, then ask away! Hope you enjoy it!

I love collecting pendulums and purchased 2 from www.E-Witch.com auction last year from a seller named Seamstressperth, one was a carved owl body made of a bone looking material and the other was a cat's head also made of a bone material, both with quartz crystal points and silver chains. Haven't been to E-Witch Auction but it may be worth checking out!

I was just reading about the missing pendulum and I was wondering exactly how one uses a pendulum? It answers yes/no questions, correct? How does it work, exactly?

Hello ASR!

There are many different ways to use the pendulum. I like to use a sheet of paper with a cross marked upon it. Hold the chain between the thumb and forefinger, let the pendulum hang down, it should not touch anything. Suspend it over the cross. But make sure your hand and arm are completely still. Wait until the crystal has stopped swinging at the end of the chain before you begin. Ask a question. The crystal should begin to move either side to side, back and forth or clockwise or anticlockwise etc. If the answer to the question is YES, it will swing back and forth along the vertical arm of the cross. If the answer is NO, it will swing side to side along the horizontal arm of the cross.

There are many other ways to use the Pendulum and there is a thread on Pendulums where I listed books regarding the same. I will bump it up for you! Have fun with it!

I saw such beautiful pendulums at a New Age store today!

Anyway, before I digress, the store used a glass pentacle where one point was "yes," two points were "no," one "maybe," one "DWA" (Don't want to answer). The topmost point was yes, the points to its both sides were both "no," the southwest point was "maybe" and the southeast point was "DWA."

You first swing the pendulum in the "yes" direction and say either loudly or in your mind (I went for this one coz the store was quite crowded) that this direction indicates a "yes" answer to the question that you are about to ask. The same is done to all other points, finally you hold the pendulum still with your thumb and forefinger at the center of the pentacle (a point is marked for convenience). Ask your question. And the pendulum would swing naturally in a certain direction continuously. Voila! Your question has been answered!

I believe my divination was accurate...well, I will know for sure in another three months or so!

I was taught to hold the pendulum in your dominant hand over your palm, then to ask it, "Show me yes, show me no and show me maybe," thanking it after it shows you which motion it will use for each answer. Each pendulum will go different ways for each response. While one will circle for yes, another one might go back and forth. I always play with them when I see them in stores or at fairs. Some will not do anything for me. The one that I bought started vibrating as soon as I held it over my palm. The other one I have was a gift from a stranger. Although I can get them to work for me, I really don't care to use them for divination. They're just not the right path for me.

Hi there. Here's a question for you all!
I am very comfortable with the I-Ching and Tarot as divination methods, and about a year ago I tried a pendullum. At first it worked out great - I could do it, I was very excited. Somewhere along the way, it started to give me wrong answers, stopping... Today I just can't work the pendullum - I bought books and seeked advice but it just doesn't work!
Please help me find an explanation!

P.S. I drink A LOT of coffee, and my hand is sometimes a little shaky. Could it be a spiritual plus physical thing? :bigredgri

Thanx a lot!

You may have somehow lost your resonance with it or it's just plain too much coffee - Stop That! :)

Hi! It could also be that too many thoughts are going through your mind or you are feeling too stressed out at the time you are trying to use the pendulum. It's just a thought. ;)

If your hands shaking is a normal thing for you, then maybe the pendulum isn't the divination tool for you. Have you tried stabilizing your elbow on a table to steady your hands? I have low blood sugar and sometimes shake, and this is something that has worked for me although I haven't tried it when using a pendulum.

I have also been told that even if we don't shake, we sometimes initiate the movement subconsciously with ever-so-slight movements of our hands. Has anyone else heard this?

yup, i did hear that too!

but... it's not normal for me to be shaky... i usually am not... tho, I've been pretty stressed these last few weeks...

I wonder if you did a cleansing on the pendulum lately? That might help a bit too. You don't have to stop drinking coffee altogether but maybe at least a couple of hours before you use the pendulum. Try burning some incense with a calming scent.

Ok, so here's what I've got so far:

a) I could have lost my ressonance (could you please explain that a little better, Freyja? I don't think I ever heard of that);

b) My pendullum can be in need of cleansing;

c) The pendullum can be wrong for me (and since I get along fine with Tarot and I-Ching, it's not a drama, really!);

d) I can be stressed (I'm not anymore, but I sure was!!!)

e) STOP THE COFFEE CRAZE!

Thank you, guys! That was really helpful! :)

Not an expert by any means, the pendulum's not my tool, either - but I'll try to explain.....

When I was shopping for a pendulum, I would pick up some that wouldn't do anything, and others that worked immediately. The one that I did buy vibrated like a purring kitty the second I placed it over my palm. "Resonance" means that the pendulum connected with my energy. Another one that was given to me as a gift doesn't vibrate quite like that but works well also.

Hope that helps!

And just because one pendulum has stopped working for you doesn't mean all would be the same. You might have to find another one. I find pendulums are like crystals. You're just the temporary owner. Perhaps it's time to move on to another.

Thank you for these too last inputs. I guess that could be it. As soon as I can, I'll go somewhere they sell pendullums and try a few of them. That could be it!
And if a pendullum is still not my tool... well... I'll always have Tarot! :)

Just one more little tidbit for you, Jupiter: A friend of mine is really into pendulums and sells them. The way she taught me to try them is as follows: Hold the end of the pendulum in your dominant hand and let the crystal, etc. hang over your receiving hand. Ask it to tell you "Show Me Yes," note the movement, say thank you, then "Show Me No" and "Show Me Maybe" thanking it each time. This gives you a chance to see how strongly - or not - the tool responds to you.

I found the pendulum a bit frustrating and couldn't help but think that I was influencing it. I prefer to stick to my tarot and runes!;)

Jupiter, have you thought about making your own? They don't have to be made out of fancy gemstones with gold chain, etc. I've made impromptu ones using a ring and a piece of thread.

I find the ones I've made works better for me than the ones at the store.

Next time you go for a walk, ask the Spirits to guide to a rock you can use. When you find that rock, thank the Spirits and leave a small offerring. Take it home & cleanse it with smoke or incense or salt...whatever you usually use. Take a small piece of wire and wrap it around the stone to make a basket. Make a loop at the top to tie a cord around. You can use a cord or a chain for the top part. There you go...a pendulum.

Test it out using the yes/no method Freyja suggested.

have u tried a different crystal? u might have offended your crystal! (it is quite possible, i've read about it multiple places). Try drinking some teas with clairvoyant properties b4 hand and see if it helps, burn divination incense, etc. try cleansing the crystal. there might be something else nearby influencing it's answers, try it in a different location.
hope this helps!

I am in the process of writing a book on pendulum divination. It's going to cover all aspects of pendulum divination (dowsing), but a large portion of it will cover using pendulums to uncover the details of past lives. I was just wondering if anyone else had experiences using pendulums for divination.

Thanks for bringing this up. We had a ton of threads on the pendulum and I just merged them together. You can find a lot of info here:

http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7437&highlight=pendulums

If you do a search, you'll also find a thread in Just Talk and numerous other threads that mention this topic.

I have two pendulums and don't use them very often. It doesn't seem to be a tool that resonates with me. I always question whether I am influencing the movement, thereby letting it tell me what I want to hear :)

I agree...But lately I've been trying to make my mind a complete blank when I use mine....and have asked the same question 3 times - have got the same answer all 3 times. (Pretty uplifting. :D)

When I first began working with pendulums, I had doubts about whether I was moving the pendulum or not. But, then the answers kept being right. There have been many times when I was caught off guard by the answer. (Like when I was asking who my soul mate was - it was exactly the person I didn't want it to be...) I'm making a board that will allow a person to ask the pendulum without having to hold it themselves, although, I'm not sure if it will work or not (Hope....)

I hope it works out for you. I really don't like having to hold the pendulum and worry that it's my shaking that's really making the pendulum move sometimes. :rolleyes:

I have DJ Conway's Little Book of Pendulum Magic. It's half instructions and half diagrams and charts. They're really small (it truly IS a little book), but easy-as-pie(especially since most of them look like pie charts, lol) to draw freehand on larger paper. For example, if one is enquiring about a possible psychic cause of an illness, it suggests drawing a half circle divided evenly from the bottom center into ten sections, which are labeled grief, sleeplessness, job, relationship, worries, dissappointment, fear, frustration, control, and psychic attack, from left to right.

It also includes a very interesting set of charts to help one in past life inquiries, including dates, locations, social backgrounds, occupations, karmic relationships (i.e. "who was this person to me in my past life?"), etc.

I think that this is a very easy mode in which to draw your own charts. For whatever question you have, write down all of the possible answers YOU can think of, leaving a space for "none of the above".

On another note, I noticed that everyone here seems to have pretty standard pendulums. By standard, I mean pointy. :p Mine is not. Mine is a small rose quartz ball grasped by three silver 'claws' (which, from the side, look like little moons) which attatch it to a silver cone (point up) with a cabochon moonstone set on the front, and is on a silver chain.

I was wondering what everyone's opinions on how the style of a pendulum affects it's results were. Personally, I find that this style of pendulum is very accurate in divination, but not so accurate in dowsing, which I think is explained by it's lack of a sharp point with which to indicate an exact location. It was also the first and only penulum(so far) that I have felt the urge to buy.

And on yet another note, does anyone here use a Mermet style pendulum, especially for divination(instead of dowsing)? (traditionally made of several different metals with a removable top so that peices of sought samples can be placed inside)
