Anyone know a safe and humane way of getting rid of mice? I had thought about putting out Decon but then I have pets and don't want them to find it. I also hate the idea of killing.

unfortunately, the only method i have found to work is snap traps. they are still humane, but they do kill. at least they kill instantly so theice don't suffer. NEVER use glue traps, as the mouse gets stuck on it and you either have to drown it, or let it suffer and die. We had a huge mouse problem once, they would steal food from our rabbits. we tried a few things, but unless you can find a pied piper, there really isn't a way to get rid of them without killing them.

Get a cat - au natural :)

They still kill the mice, but at least it's not using a toxin or something harmful to other, friendlier animals.

My house had a mouse problem for a while.. stole from the dogs, the ferrets (ironic, huh...should be eating those mice and they feed them instead) and the hamster. We tried all sort of "humane" traps and none worked. The cat, however, did.

I seem to recall there once having been something like decon that was supposed to be fairly safe for other animals if they came across a poisoned mouse... doesn't help if you think the other animals would find it and eat it directly though.

we have cats works wonder all but the rat. then we put tom catpoison in the basement where the animals are not allowed to go. works great rightnow but we keep setting it out. it kills thembut usually that the only way to get rid of them, sorry i don't have a better solution.

Wait i just thought of something the have these plug in now that make an annoying noise to the pests and drive them away. i don't know if it works or not but it could be worth a try.

those electronic things don't work.. been there done that.. now we have live traps that we got from Walmart.. have caught a few.. but we also have 9 cats who I think are in a conspiracy with the mice (they let them go where ever they want)... go figure

Damn straight, and they will either eat the carcass or give it too you as a gift :) You can mount the carcasses on pikes to warn off other mice :evilway:

When I lived with my mom we had a mouse problem. They stole food from my birds and killed 4 of my beloved birds. One night I even seen a piece of easter candy from my sisters room run across the floor! The only thing she ever used was posion. It did the trick. The only pets we had was the birds, a hamster and the dog. She just put it in places the dog couldnt get it. However I dont think I could do it now because I share my apartment with 9 rats that I love very much. But posion is the only thing that has worked for us aside from the traps.

I've got a cat but he won't get his lazy butt of the couch to work.:rollingla
_catroll_Last time that we had rat problems, I found a rat snake in my bathroom who had most likely come in looking for food. Sadly, I had to release it because my Mom's terrified of snakes.

We had a mice problem and I got a kitten from a farm. It's kept them down a bit and my dogs hunt for rats.

Maybe it's just the mice in Colorado, but I've found that if they have an adequate food source, they won't touch the damn poison.

Cat's can only do so much. Basically they have to get lucky and catch the little booger out in a spot that it can get to.

I would really go for traps. They do have these new ones now that just trap their head I think.

But no matter what you do to get rid of them, you have to think about keeping them away. For that, use steel wool. Go around and find every hole you think they could creep into and stuff a wad of steel wool in it. They can't chew through it cause it will kill them. Just remember it doesn't take a very big hole. Something the size of a quarter is big enough for an adult to get through.

I live in a very old house, right in my back yard there is a huge swamp and next door there are horses and up the road a junk yard.... We had mouse prob fer a while( can u beleave it???? ) we had a cat and used traps. But then the cat died :raining: and then winter came.... Then rats came from the swamp wanting shelter.... They took care of all the mice.... Then becamee a huge prob!!!!!!!! w used traps... they didnt work enough... Then we dicided we had to get poison... It worked real good. Fer mice u can buy a 'house" 4 the poison, its like a box and animals cant get to it but the mice can. We used lil bowls an put them in unused cupboards and such. Dog never got ahold of it. The only downfall of poison is if they die in the wall....*its smelly*
But ya i say poison. better safe thaan sorry.

I had to stop filling the birdfeeder in front of the house because mice had moved in under the porch & would come into the porch to grocery shop if the birds hadn't dropped enough seed. I have cats, & I've found mice in the house a couple of times in the last year. Once as soon as the cats had injured the mouse, they lost interest in it & left it for me to deal with. Once I found a mouse squashed flat under a pile of books. I'm still wondering how the cats tipped the pile over on the mouse.

I read in one of my herbal books that you should put peppermint leaves where mice hang out; they don't like the smell & will leave the area. I've never tried it, though.

Use herbs...
Fresh or dried leaves of Pennyroyal, Tansy, and Mint. It really helps discourage the little varmits. Just scatter the herbs where the mice are most seen...behind furniture, in cabinets, etc.
If you want a bit of revenge on the rodents, soak some tasty candy or other treat in habanero juice (PLEASE wear gloves when dealing with those peppers! And ya dun wanna scratch nuttin' while wearing them gloves I found out the *hard* way)
