View Full Version : Raccoons on the deck...

We've got raccoons in the neighborhood. The other night, one was staring in the window that we have that's "way up high" as the kitties say--it's near the ceiling and runs the length of the living room. Anyway, there's part of the roof outside of it where cats often run across and peek in, and the raccoons make a rare visit.
This morning three raccoons walked across the back deck (or should I say waddled). I ran to get the camera but the cats had scared them away (from through the window with a whole lot of yowling) by the time I got out. I got one shot of a raccoon who scurried up to the window to peek in. I warned our landlord (who lives in the garage apartment attached to our house) to keep his cat inside for awhile--raccoons will kill cats on occasion. But they sure are fun to watch, and the intelligence behind those eyes is pretty startling.

Your lucky, I love raccoons! The place I used to live at had some, there was a mom and her babies living near by that would come every night to eat my dogs food off the back porch...after a few months theyd eat out of my hands....so cute! I had two baby raccoons when I was youngerl, the mother had been killed in an attic before the people realized there was babies. I had them for 2 weeks all to myself, it was neat.

durring this past blood moon, two little 'coons were all snuggled up on my deck (mind you on the seconf floor of our apt building) until i opened the door to go out and see the moon. Fortunately, I saw them ::before:: i went outside ^^;; lol. Saw a little bit of motion, then two little masked faces looking in at me. They were like "Ooo, what are you doing in there?? You're kinda neat..." Unfortunately, they left before i could get a picture of them.
At home (i'm at school now), we live in teh woods and we have two cats. Both indoor outdoor. We've had cats my entire life, we also have 'coons...we've never had a problem w/ them and the cats. Could be cause either our cats are smart enough to stay away, or they are good enough fighters to get away (our cats have gotten into fights on and off, sometimes w/ the neighbor cat, sometimes w/ other things..dunno what..could be lots of things tho. We've got everything from moose, to bear, to coy-dogs, 'coons, skunks, and most dangerous for kitties: Fisher cats...they nearly cleaned out all the cats and small dogs in our neighborhood...). We used to compost, but stopped cause the coons and skunks kept getting into the compost bin, no matter how it was secured or fenced off. The coons usually won't come around, unless there's catfood out on the deck (which we don't do anymore)...cause there's more food in the woods for 'em than in my yard and on our deck ^^;;

We are surrounded by woods and critters - oppossum, racoons etc etc.
We try and not feed them or let them into the trash. The babies are cute!

Yeah, they are really cute, aren't they? But you're right, it's best not to feed them--they're wild animals and shouldn't get too dependent on humans.

How delightful!
Living in the UK and Australia, I've never seen a real live racoon :(
But I imagine they're gorgeous. We have possums...one house I lived in, we used to have a whole family of them come up to the verandah every night, dead on 6pm to get their daily apple. I loved those little guys, I got to see 3 generations born and grow before I moved away.

true enough, but around the area I was living there were so many, and they just went from house to house eating dog/cat food, garbage, whatever...so I didnt feel to bad., I wouldnt feed any wildlife around where I am now.... the poor ducks at the lagoon, people feed them alll summer long so they get all hooked on the easy meal and dont fly away for the winter...all those people dont want get cold so they dont go down and feed them all winter, the things almost starve to death!

Aren't they fun! We have a mama racoon that started letting us hand feed her about 3 years ago when my daughter was 2. She brings her new crop of babies every year to feed too. They won't let us feed them by hand but she'll come right up to us. And they've never bothered our cats. Even when we had kittens. In fact, the cats scare the racoons now and then but the racoons have never offered to bother the cats. We'll be moving soon and I'm really going to miss our furry woodland friends.

They are cute! And babies--these were all fat and pretty big, but the babies must be adorable. You're lucky in that they haven't bothered your cats--they can be nasty tempered and those claws are pretty sharp. We live right in the suburbs of a large city, and we have so many squirrels and a lot of raccoons, so maybe where you move will still have some fun woodland buddies hanging around.

We have possums here too--they're usually found as roadkill, unfortunately, because they're so...uh...not bright and not fast. They look like giant rats and the first time I saw one, years ago, I almost freaked out!

Ok, this is more possum related, but reading about all the baby critters made me think of when I was nursing and how I wished humans had been marsupials with the convient pouch to hold our kids in and feed them in......
Ok... that's my random thought on Motherhood for the day....
Back to your regularly scheduled topic!

While I didn't get any good clear shots, I did get one of the cats gathering to drive off the 'innerlopurz' and you can just see the raccoon a bit on the other side of the window, and then I got one when the raccoon was up on the roof outside the upper windows (the highest point in the room--which is pretty much at the beam where the lights are on the left--is about 10-11' high).

We had a pet coon named Merlin. I will see if I have any baby pics of him! He was adorable and made the funniest lil noises!
