I'm going to be gone for a couple hours while I clean my apartment... :shhhh:
I was wondering is there anyone else that cleans habitually...like every saturday morning or just every now and again when it needs it? I took my dirty clothes off last night and forgot to put 'em in hamper! >.< They are on the floor in my closet lol...
So are you all once-in-a-while cleaners or habitual?

I clean when I feel like it. Usually around the same time I get grossed out about the place.
The one thing I do try to keep spotless is the bathroom. All the rest gets cleaned when needed.

I have an illness that zaps my energy. I can either work or clean house, not both. Dishes and laundry and bed making and cleaning cat boxes gets done, but the heavy stuff - well, when the mood strikes.
Especially after the last time I scrubbed our huge kitchen floor for hours and Flar missed the trash can with a bowl of cereal and let it sit there. My kids are grown and I am fed up with cleaning up after people, especially adults.
It bothers me because I used to be a meticulous housekeeper. My son agrees that I went completely downhill after my first back surgery.

Everyday, all the time...with 2 kids and 3 dogs and 4 cats all in a small place...its a constant chore to keep it from turning into a mess!!!!!!

I usually only clean when I'm in the mood (bored) and that tends to be after everything is a shameful mess...

i'm a once in a while cleaner. i clean when: 1) it's really gross here, 2) i get a wild hair and happen to feel like cleaning, or 3) there's an inspection coming up.

I actually just finished cleaning my room. I clean when I have the time for the most part. For the most part I'm only in my room for sleeping and doing homework every so often (which I like once a month 8O ). But I don't think I could ever have a big house, cause all that cleaning would drive me nutty.

i tend to clean either on weekends or on mondays. weekends feel wasted if i've spent them cleaning, but at the same time i have more time to do everything then.
laundry is always monday night unless i run out of clothes. i find it really hard to keep motivated when there are so many other things i could be doing. sometimes i let it slip for a couple of days but someone always manages to drop by and i sit there obsessing about the mess in the kitchen, etc.

to the next, theres no point in not doing it all the time, besides
i don't like messes, there just to... messy LOL.

When I notice a layer of grime on things, I tend to get out the duster and vacuum. Laundry is whenever I run out of things to wear.

I try to pick up everyday so it looks neat, but I do all the deep cleaning (laundry, vacuuming, mopping, etc...) on Saturdays. It's usually a nice break from academia, nothing to think too hard about! :tongueout

Kinda old thread, but since this is along the lines of cleaning - I might as well post here. :D
What kind of products does everyone clean with? I'm in the process of majorly cleaning out my house, and I need some heavy duty stuff for things like the sink and bathroom, and possibly something for the carpet? :fpoke:

I'm a slob. A total slob. I only clean when I'm tripping oover it, or when company is coming over. And I mean really, really tripping over it. As in no more paths through the room..... And that was before I got sick! This of course is odd because I'm a Virgo, a sign that is full of neat-freaks.....
My husband on the other hand is a neat-freak. A Gemini neat-freak.... But a defeated one as well. He's pretty much given up on ever having a clean house. At least in the house that we've got now. It's just way too big. We're moving to a townhouse next month, much, much smaller. Like a quarter of the size of this house! It will be much, much easier to keep clean.

I usually do a full-scale cleaning every other week. It's just me in my apt, so it doesn't get very dirty. Usually on Sunday mornings I do a basic clean-up--wipe down the bathroom sink with Clorox wipes, do whatever dishes there are, run the vacuum, and generally pick up & organize. Every other week I do the entire mopping/scrubbing down.

I clean when I have time. So, the place is much cleaner during winter and summer breaks. Though my boyfriend isn't much of a help keeping the place tidy. =/
I tried coming up with a system of cleaning certain rooms on certain days and doing the laundry on certain dates, but I couldn't keep it up for long.

well i was spoilt till i was like 19.my grandmother (when i lived there) would clean my room everyday! then at home mom cleaned my room like once a week. Now that im living with my soon to be old man i wash clothes when were out of clothes to wear.I Wash dishes...never i cant!i cant touch the washing stuff and i cant touch rubber.he cleans them about everyother day!(sometimes i run the dish washer.)I clean the rest of the house when i get mad at the fact that it looks this way and there is someone comming over. But when it comes to the pets (one rabbit, one hamster and a fish tank) they get cleaned everyday!(the bunny gets cleaned 2 times a day and they fish i change there water once a week!) So i guess you could say i clean the house when ever it gets real bad! but i am working on it!

I used to be a total slob. I've always completely despised cleaning, figured I had better things to do with my time. I still don't like it and I'm still far from perfect, but with 2 young kids, 3 BIG dogs, 2 cats, and a rather messy hubby, I have to keep somewhat up on the cleaning in my rather small house. I actually started the Flylady program a while back, and while I don't follow her system exactly, it sure has helped me improve the condition of my house.

I do dishes and laundry every day. Other stuff I clean as needed, i guess. Clutter is my big downfall. I clean off the 'flat surfaces' when there's no more room to pile stuff on them. :weirdsmil
If I get the house really clean, pick up all the legos off the floor and everything, our black lab will go find a cardboard box, and tear it into a thousand pieces all over the place, and then she looks all proud about it. :T

*LOL* Aren't black Labs such brats? Mine will drag trash to her crate and tear it up, or she'll wait until I have the hallway all vaccuumed and cleaned up, and then she'll pee in the middle of the hall (after she had just been outside for half an hour!!!). Luckily she's the only one of our 3 dogs that'll pee in the house. And that doesn't happen too often anyways. Still, with her being nearly 4 years old and crate/housetrained, you'd think she'd get over it...I think she just likes to see me riled up. Silly puppies :)

If my house isn't clean, my husband starts to spin like a top.
No, not literally. But he's OCD. It's very stressful for him if the house is a mess. We simply keep on top of it every other day or more so it doesn't get so bad that it feels like cleaning.

cleaning? What is this cleaning you speak of?
 jk Call me another member of the "Doesn't clean until there are NO paths" group. I do clean, but 2 days later, it's junked up again. :flamer: Dang it! Cleaning would be SO much easier if I could just walk around naked and never eat. Stupid laundry and dishes. I haven't vaccuumed in months :bigredblu I did get a new vaccuum though. Still in my car.... my old vaccuum scared the jeebers out of me. When I tried to use it, you'd swear one of those flying creatures the wraiths in lord of the rings rides on was in my apartment. That's another problem I have. I have a HOUSE worth of stuff, and a 1 bedroom apartment.
I'm going to go look at flylady
hmm, some editing to the system are in order
I HAVE to have my shower first thing in the morning. It's what wakes me up most mornings. Breakfast is NEXT. Or breakfast then shower, depending on how hungry I am. I have been known to actually growl at people when hungry :bigredblu

I do a little cleaning everyday (its a must with three kids and a cat ). But as for real cleaning - I have to be in the mood. I go through these phases where I will clean like a mad woman for a day or two, and then I don't do anything for like two weeks. I always thought maybe I'm bipolar or something? I pick up, vacuum and light dust every day. Mondays are linens days (gotta wash all the linens), Wednesdays are spot cleaning bathrooms days (two and half baths) and Fridays are full fledged cleaning days (also laundry day). I also do Spring and Fall cleaning. Note the use of the word "I" in there. I have three boys (ages 15, 11, & 3), a husband and a dog (she's not much help cleaning although her tail works well as a duster). It's a lot to keep up with, lately I have been making my older two boys clean their rooms and their bathroom. That has helped some.
For light cleaning I love to use Clorox wipes, sure makes life a bit easier. Good bathroom cleaner is Kaboom (I know I saw someone asking about cleaners). Mr. Clean is great for overall cleaning. Windex wipes are pretty darn cool too.
Hard to believe it is almost time to start spring cleaning. :)

oh he noticed allright...but he afraid to say anything. if he says how great it is, he thinks u will think he is saying how dirty it was. or he is afraid if he comments on it, he might be asked to help because he has shown he cares. or he may worry it will stop if he says anything. in either case, do it for you, aura, for the joy of your shiny sink and stop killing yourself to get a reaction from anyone else but you. trust me (and flylady, she says this too) he will catch on, it will just take time for him to see you are establishing habits, not just cleaning the house.

stick with it - it gets easier! i use vinegar and baking soda to clean almost everything. baking soda i use where i need to scrub, like in place of ajax or old dutch and vinegar i use where i need to shine, like windows(or your sink) or as an antibacterial like on bathroom countertops or the outside of the toilet. i use a chemical cleaner for the inside of the toilet and thats about it. my floors i use dish soap and some vinegar.

I will copy out some of the recipes. She has a core set of products that she does most of her stuff from. I love baking soda. I will have them up over the next few days.
For me, I love vinegar and baking soda. Baking soda is a mild abrasive that works well in tubs and showers. I love vinegar as a glass cleaner on the table, counters etc. It does not do too well over paint.
Be patient with me, my life has gotten a little nutty. I will get them for you. I know that I needed inexpensive items to clean with. Now I am spoiled. I love my clorox with teflon! Another person who I used tips from when I got married was Diane Thomas.

http://www.queenofclean.com/tips/index.html
From this page you can choose to go to several different tip pages. I like her suggestion on keeping the drains running clean. I have a garbage disposal. One of my personal tips is to periodically run an orange peel through the garbage disposal it makes the kitchen smell wonderful and helps with any odors that may collect in there.
A lot of her cleaners are there if you go through the different sections. I will list some more for you. I am glad to hear that you are having some success. My home took a while to get this bad and it is going to take a while to get fixed but my hubby and I are on our way.
http://www.speakeasy.org/~traceyb/thrift/sensegreen.html
These are like what I was using from the Diane Thomas book. For Brass instead of using the tomato Ketchup I will very often use blue cheese dressing. A friend of mine was wearing a necklace( or a bracelet I don't remember which) and she accidently dipped her tarnished charm in the blue cheese dressign that came with chicken wings. It immediately polished. I have liked it for that ever since.
You will notice that baking soda and vinegar play a lot of roles. This site uses a lot of ammonia. I do not because my husband really dislikes the odor of it.
http://groups.msn.com/FrugalLiving/frugalcleaners.msnw
These are along the same lines. I recognize a lot of these. I like the fact that they give you all of the warnings and the general info on the products.
I am thinking that I may not copy out the recipes. I think you will find the sites useful. I am nto sure that I could add anything worthwhile from the book when it comes to cleaners.
I like a lot of her tips. Things like using a children's rake to pull up matted down carper by gently running it one direction then the other. You can get a lot of her tips on line. She has a show on DIY.
This adds just a few things
http://www.frugal.org.uk/house.html
I hope that these help. I have to go start working but I will also get around to looking at Flylady. I am working with a book for right brainers when it comes to getting organized. The combo of cleaning tips and organizing tips and methods is a good things for me.

I knew the baisc things that I love abotu the simple inexpensive recipes so I simply searched "cheap cleaners" on google and went through them for a few minutes. You are very welcome. I think I said before that I know what it is like. I am going to be working hard on my house today. It is bad enough that I hate seeing it and living there. It is tiem for drastic measures. My husabnd has not been feeling well and he is the primary housecleaner. I am working through the stuff. I am determined to get my dishes caught up, the laundry caught up, get them both on a schedule and elimate the clutter. I have a bin of stuff for a spring garage sale.
My hubby is driving me out of my mind. He is ignoring the systems that we just set up to follow. He got all of the bills caught up by pinning them to the cork board. He was supposed to take care of them and make sure that they were paid. He and I were supposed to have a weekly check in. He skipped the check in and I found a collection of the upcoming bills on the couch. I got them pinned up, and I was there so I knwo he went through our banking on line. It is not as bad as it once was.
We are getting there in small steps.

Don't clean your kids rooms from them after they get to a age where they can do it them selfs.and give them chores to do.I didnt have to clean my room till i got married at 20!and i never had chores to do.NONE! and now im paying for it.My house looks like a 2 year olds room waiting on mommie to come clean it!so when i have kids im going to remember this and have them help with stuff!maybe by then i will be a cleaner! LOL

My sympathies! I did have chores to do but my house is still a disaster! I grew up being told that my room was never cleaned so I kind of gave up doing it. If the next time it got messy I was going to be told it had never been cleaned, waht was the point?
I am in a similar situation to yours. Wish me luck as well. Keep me posted and I will keep you posted. I did nto end up having people over on Wednesday, but I am this week. I am also working a few hours of overtime and added another night to martial arts.
My husband has been ill and completely let himself go. He gained 30 pounds that he could not afford to. Walking hurts so bad for him, but I insisted he start, that we are looking at swimming. That means that we will be joining the YMCA. Wish me luck finding time for that in my schedule. I am not giving up my martial arts classes. I am either going to be in the best shape of my life or pain and I are going to become close intimate friends.

I never clean. I live alone. I don't have to. I don't want to.
I am sure there will come a day when I must find some matching socks to wear tho..

I'm a panic cleaner...I clean when I'm expecting company. I try to clean, but I'm easily distracted. Honestly, if you look up the word 'slob' in a dictionary, you'll see my picture there.

Flylady calls that kind of cleaning the stash and dash. We have all done that one! Have you heard the term SHE? That applies to those of us who get easily distracted. Its stands for Sidetracked Home Executive. That one came from Pam and Peggy's system of the same name where you clean using a recipe box full of index cards of chores to do.

I sadly lack household skills. I'll do the dishes when their dirty, but I have a nasty habit of putting off cleaning its rather sad really. I ought to dust to today but I doubt I will. Maybe this weekend, I'm the only one in the house a lot of the time, and it doesn't really bother me. I'm a panic cleaner and closet stuffer when I have company I like, but otherwise they just have to deal with the mess.

I like to clean when the mood strikes me. ;) One thing I can't stand is cleaning when other people are around. I have to have the entire place to myself in order for me to feel comfortable cleaning. Plus an added bonus of that is I can turn up my music really loud and listen to it while I clean.
Dishes, even though there's a diswasher in my kitchen, I'd much rather wash by hand. To me they just feel and look cleaner and I can wash them as they get dirty instead of having to wait for them to pile up. Besides, last time I used the dishwasher I must have put the wrong soap in there or too much of it or something because when I opened the door all these bubles started coming out at me like you see in the movies. There was bubbles all over the kitchen! So I took the oportunity to wash the kitchen floor seeing how it had lots of bubbles on it already! :nyah:
As far as laundry itself goes, I only wash it about once every 6 weeks. I figured out that if I have enough clean clothes and towels to last me 6 weeks and wash them at the end of the 6 weeks I'll save time because I can spend an entire day washing clothes instead of taking out of my other days doing a load of laundry here and there. And yes I know I'm crazy.

I clean every couple of days. My house is very small so there isn't much to it. I have an eight-year-old son, but he cleans up after himself pretty well. He cleans the toilet too... because he's the one that makes it gross. I do the dishes every day, sometimes several times a day. I hate bugs and I'm paranoid that any leftover food stuff is going to invite them. I don't do laundry though till I just have nothing to wear because I hate doing laundry and the machines are all the way out in the garage. It's a good 15 or 20 steps I would have to take...

I clean when cleaning needs to be done. I don't like it when my fiance is around, because I don't like for people to watch me clean. I also clean when I'm in the mood to do it, mostly when I should be going to bed.

Great thread! :boing:
I used to clean a lot more than I currently do. Depression has zapped my desire, but a clean house does make me feel better. Maybe I should force myself to clean more.
I used to have a system where I did a little bit each day, but that was a PITA. I am currently on the "when it needs done" wagon or about twice a week. There are still things I have to do daily; we have 2 cats, a rabbit, a dog and a pool to take care of in the summer.
My problem is I think the OCD in me makes me go too much in depth when I do clean. I can't just "dust," I have to wipe down everything with a cleaner.
I did use to use the vinegar and baking soda bit when money was tight, and it does work very well! However, I still had to use Soft Scrub with Bleach for the commode and for the kitchen sink, otherwise it just would not feel clean. The baking soda worked well for everything else.
Can you mix bleach into baking soda to make your own Soft Scrub? I wonder.

I usually do the dishes every day, do the pickup, folding, sweeping etc everyother day. There is a lot of 'pick-up' to be done because my fiance has the unfortunate habit of leaving garbage and dishes where he uses them :S (I swear it's his only vice though so I'm willing to put up with it) I usually do the vacuuming once a week and give the bathroom a full scrub once a week. The floor gets washed once a month or so and that's when I move all the little appliances and clean behind them (microwave, toaster oven). Once a year we move the big stuff and bleach the floor. Andrew does the cat box and takes out the garbage. He also washes/dries the laundry and I fold it.
Of course on weeks like this one where I have non-stop midterms, the house turns into chaos in about a day and goes downhill from there.

I voted when cleaning needs to be done. For us that means dishes are done & the dish washer ran every day, garbage goes out atleast every other day unless it's already full, kitchen counters are wiped down every day, we do a load of laundry every other day so it doesn't pile up, the entire house gets vaccumed twice a week. Bedding is washed every other weekend unless hubby & I have been particularly froggy and bathrooms are cleaned when I can see dirt, dust, rings or anything else so that varies from days to a few weeks.
And my house WILL be 200% spotless & candles lit before any company comes over.

Like Shanti, where was the "Constantly" option.
I spend at least 1 hour a day picking up and cleaning. Basically, pick something up, pout it away, from the room I'm in then, pick something up, put it away, or dust or sweep... round and round and round.

I don't clean often - mostly because I am lucky that my bf is more keen on cleaning than me. Also, i've found that my standards are not as high as some people. Not to say that I live in a sty, but that I don't like things to be 100% clean. It is scary how many people have obsessive tendancies towards cleaning. I figure if it doesn't look dirty then why worry?

I need that 'constantly' option. I vacuum every single day, can't stand for crumbs or spills to sit around the kitchen counters, and empty wrappers and cans and boxes and whatnot immediately go in the garbage.

We've got 3 kids and 4 cats. There is NEVER a time when the house doesn't need cleaning.
However, I find that when I'm stressed out, I tend to clean everything in sight. It's my way of gaining control over my environment.
