Around here, we didn't get much snow last night, but the roads iced up real quick. A schoolmate of mine (a junior) was driving with a sophomore sometime between 3 and 4 AM. Don't ask me why a sober 16- and 15-year old were out gallavanting at 4AM on a Monday morning, but anyway--the car slipped on the ice. When the paramedics arrived, the sophomore was pronounced dead on arrival and the other boy was hospitalized for severe injuries. I was wondering if anyone here had any holiday energy to spare for the greiving families and friends of these boys. Their families are going to be going through some hard times this season.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family--my hometown saw a similar thing last year and I know how hard it can hit a community.

Sadly, there's new evidence now that the car didn't just slip on the icy road, as was originally thought. A farewell letter found with the boys proves it was actually an attempted double-suicide. The boys were both suffering from severe depression (though they appeared by all acounts fine) and had made a pact to go ahead and do this. They were apparently going an excess of 100 mph on a 4 lane highway, cut across all 4 lanes into oncoming trafffic (over/through the concrete divider), and slammed almost sideways into a utility pole. The car was torn in half and the driver (the 16 year old) was thrown a good distance, while the other boy was trapped inside and died while the rescue squad tried to get him out. It took almost 7 hours for them to free him because of the damage to the the car and the pole--there was a serious possiblity of live wires falling into the street or the pole itself falling over. And if the second boy lives, the police are going to arrest him for homicide--or at least aiding and abetting a suicide--and try to get him tried as an adult. I think it's just so sad that the two of them thought they had to do this at all, let alone chose to do it 5 days before Christmas. What a way to tear your family apart for the holidays.

This is a sad situation indeed. The boys were obviously serious. The survivor, hopefully, actually wanted to die to and they want to lock him in prison? He is 16 and obviously needs mental help not a prison! And technically the other boy would be guilty of the same charges if he would of survived. The poor families are suffering enough. They dont need to prosecute this severly depressed lad. They need to help him, his family and the family that did loose their son.
I sure hope he survives and gets help. He will probably be more suisidal than he was before.
All so sad. :(
