What are they? What are they used for? Where do you get them?

If inquiring minds want to know, I'll tell you! :D

You guys crack me up. And, uh, Sahm, that's a good one ~ just don't go giving me a big head, k? :D

~ What are they? They're muslin dolls stuffed with batting. The shape reminds me of the Nile Venus figures. The woman who created them stitches eyes (tiny five-pointed stars) on the faces and crescent moons on the hands. Then, she usually puts a small spiral where the womb would be. Then, she does other stitchwork where she feels it's needed, or where the owner of the doll needs something to go.

I personalized mine further when I brought it home. I have a broken biddy-bell bracelet that I stitched across the front ~ now it looks like she has a biddybell hipscarf! Because I'm the "Blue Butterfly Priestess", I used fabric paint to paint a blue butterfly on her. I also took the blue butterfly from a broken necklace and stitched it to the doll's throat. Then, I took silver embroidery floss to stitch a "chain" for the necklace. ;)

That's part of what makes them special; you can personalize them so easy! Mine also got a "cape" of light blue sprinkled with tiny blue stars, tied off with a yard of light blue 1/4 inch satin ribbon. (you can get the neatest things in the remnants bins!)

~ They're used in trance-dancing. You can use them for about anything. Mine's sitting on my altar being patient, waiting for a drum-session, or a round of dancing. :D The first time I danced with mine, I thought that I was going to feel silly, but the experience was quite the opposite. We have the idea of creating Elemental Dolls ~ one made specifically for each Element, for people who do Elemental magics.

~ My friend Cime makes the dolls. She can be reached via e-mail at cimeshadow@aol.com. Just put "Goddess Dolls" in the subject line and let her know you'd like to know more about them. :D

That she is, but that's not what I'm talking about.

Goddess dolls are wonderful! I didn't order mine from Mairwen's friend but made my own. I don't think I'll ever be done working on it. It is really special to me.

Here's a couple of links for those who want to give it a try...might be better in Arts & Crafts but it fits here in this thread...

You can make her as simple or as complicated as you want.

A few months ago, I had bumped into a website that had goddess dolls. They weren't the large hipped, dancing goddess style, but could stand or sit kind of like a regular doll. They had no faces, and I remember the woman did specific goddesses (I remember Aphrodite, Hera, Pele, Hectate, Persephone). The cool thing is, she had a story on each, told in a modern context from that particular goddesses point of view. For instance, Persephone had a controlling mother who never let her have any fun. She meets Hades at a party & decides to take a ride on his bike. When she doesn't come home on time Demeter freaks.

I can't seem to find this site again. Does this sound familiar to anyone here?????

You might be thinking of our very own Pandoras. She makes gorgeous Goddess dolls. Here's her link: Pandora's Bazaar (http://www.pandorasbazaar.com/)

This sounds a LOT like something *I'm* planning on making. I'm judging which would be my best medium. The posable limbs sound intriguing. Please check back with me as I certainly am serious - only mine would definitely have faces, faces being my specialty. ("Unti We Have Faces", C.S. Lewis...)
