View Full Version : Alchemy

I've been throwing around the idea of asking Morr about starting an Alchemy class here, but the thing is I think it would be cool to include both the Western school of Alchemy and the Chinese school. I have no experience with the Western study so I'd be looking for a co-teacher. Does anyone feel they have enough knowledge and experience to teach it? :D
I started studying Taoism about 7~8 years, two years ago this transitioned into Chinese Alchemy (which is not so much about turning lead into gold as it is about turning vital life energy into health and youth aka "immortality"). Class would start off with Taoist philosophy and text before it moved onto Alchemy meditation techniques and would include explorations of Buddhism, Confucianism and I Ching as needed (I will not be teaching Buddhism, Confucianism or the I Ching but some background in these areas is necessary to understand the more advanced Alchemical texts).
Would anybody be interested in such a course? (because there's no point in tracking down a co-teacher if no one is hahahah)

Me me me! I am a super-alchemic "student". I have been studying on alchemy for a while now actually. I may not be the greatest teacher, but I would be good I'll say that. If not a teacher, then definately a student.

It's hard for me to say given how little I know about Western Alchemy. I guess if you can explain the history, the symbols used, the theory/philosophy/world-view and some common practices that might be enough. Obviously when it comes to External Alchemy one doesn't want to give people the impression that an online course will teach you all you need to know versus an actual teacher. We don't want people poisoning themselves or blowing up their houses @_@ hahaha But I think we can do a course that gives people enough understanding to pick up an alchemic text and not go "whhhhaaaa? @__@"

Interested as a student. And might I recommend mentioning Indian alchemy (even if you don't go into it)? I wrote a final paper comparing Indian and Hermetic alchemies for a class last semester and it was really interesting to research. Anyway, I'm definitely interested.

Yes I've heard of it ^_^ ... is it derived from Tantra perhaps?
So yeah I think there's enough interest to start a small class ^.^ I'm just trying to get the co-teacher issue worked out XD XD XD

Oh good. I hope the class does get to start; it's a fascinating subject.

I'd be very interested in an alchemy class. I'm doing some research now. Unfortunately, I couldn't help as a teacher.

Did this class ever happen? I've been looking for it all over the site but couldn't find it. I am very much interested in this. I feel that I could make some contribution but more in a discursive way than in a teaching way. I find that the subject is so broad that it would be hard to give a comprehensive, all-in-a-nutshell account of it. And I consider my knowledge to be only the tip of a pretty colossal iceberg.

Why not both? I think a major... um... lack out there is the focus on only the philosophical aspects without actually performing any experiments. I dunno that it would be very easy to do in *this* kind of classroom setting, though.
