View Full Version : Tarot Readings

Okay, I said last week that this week I'd get you to start doing readings. It may seem a little pre-mature, because we haven't done the minor arcana, or signifier cards, or spreads or anything, but you really don't need all that to get started, right?

So, I'm going to rearrange the partner list a bit... there are 3 people who havent' done a single assignment and I'm just going to assume, until they contact me, that they are out of the class. I'll PM anyone affected and tell them about new partners.

Everyone else, I want you to do AT LEAST one reading (and as many as you want) for your partners per week from now until the end of class. Your partner will evaluate your reading, and PM me the results. These readings will factor in SLIGHTLY on your grades. If you don't do any readings in one week, your partner will return an evaluation form with 0 points, and that will lower your grade.

I expect an evaluation form from everyone by every MONDAY. I don't want to have to ask for them.

Please pay attention to the list of people who hasn't handed in assignments for your partner's name. If they are on that list they will NOT be doing readings, and I don't expect an evaluation from you.

We will start simple, with one card readings. Draw one card for your partner, describe that card to them, then tell them what the card means and how it pertains to them. Remember to go with your intuition first, then follow any symbolism the card uses for deeper explinations.

Here's the evaluation form you will use:

Possible 10 points

/2 followed instructions (describe card, then did the reading)

/1 explained symbolism

/5 correct card definitions (as you understand them)

/2 accuracy of the reading

Total points out of 10:

If, for any reason, you are unable to evaluate your partner, please let me know ASAP so arrangements can be made.

Any questions?

EDIT: Here's an example of what I want your readings to look like.

I've pulled one card for one of my students (if, you think that the reading pertains to you, pm me and I'll let you know if it was you. :))

Deck: Gendron Tarot

Card: 2 of Wands, reversed.

Description: A woman rests in a field of flowers, beside a white sand beach, with waves washing onto the shore. In the background is a large hill/mountain covered with trees, and the sky is hazy and grey. The woman, as I said, is in a field of Irises, which are orange and blue, and she has an Iris tucked behind her left ear as well. The woman is standing so I can only see her profile, the left side of her face. Between her hands, floating like a ball of energy, is the earth, and resting over her left arm are two staves, glowing with a soft light. She wears a very dark colored robe, and it's hard to tell what color it is. Her face seems very calm as she watches the earth between her hands.

Symbolism: Irises typically represent a message, and their colors orange and blue suggest success and ambition (orange) paired with calm patience and wisdom. The fact that the woman has one tucked behind her ear shows that these characteristics are somethign that she is concerned or focused on. The ocean can represent life and fertility, as all life came from the ocean. In this case, because we see the water washing up on the beach I'm going to assume it represents the movement and sometimes turmoil of life. The mountain of trees in the background represents growth in the future.

Card meaning: (reversed) powerlessness, fear of action, feeling out of control, forced to conform.

Card meaning for you: You feel like you're out of your comfort zone, and you're forced to go along with something you don't want to do. You know that it's necessary however, and that's why you're agreeing to it. It has left you afraid of the future, and hesitant to act.
Normally this card speaks of personal power and control over the world around you...this situation has taken this control from you and left you uncomfortable. Just be strong, do what has to be done, and you'll find that control comes to you again, and you'll feel better than ever.

I have a question--when we are reading for partner/whomever we end up with...how many card spread do we use?

Full Celtic Cross? 3 card-Past, Present, Future? Something totally different?

Just trying to clarify, for myself, what is needed.

You must have missed it in the first post... I said: "We will start simple, with one card readings." I'll let you know when we'll move to more advanced readings.

You send them to your partners so they can evaluate the reading, and then your partner sends the evaluation to me.

quick question...are we to use the entire deck or only the major arcana for the one card readings?

When we read for our partners are we supposed to do a general reading, or do we ask a question?

That's up to you. :) You can either ask your partner if they have a question they want answered, or you can just go ahead and do a general reading.

Bump. I added an example of a reading to the first post.

How the heck are we supposed to know things like Irises represent a message??? Ack! Stress!!!

LOL It's called research, dear. I didn't know that, either, until I typed "flower symbolism" into google. :) In time, just by working with the symbolism in your deck, you'll automatically know what the symbols mean and wont' have to look them up.

Will the new partners be soon I hope? I would really like to start, but, well, y'know.

Yeah, I'm antsy, but I'm really enjoying this!

Amethyst Rose: If necessary, I feel more than capable of working with more than one person. I'd be happy to work with Clockwork_Eros if his old partner was one of the 3 that have gotten lost in the æther of cyberspace.

Clockwork_Eros....pm your partner and see if she will be able to evaluate readings for you. If you don't hear back from her, then you can partner up with Dashifen. If she is able to work with you, then that's fine, she just won't be doing readings for you. Either way, let me know the out come. :)

(just an FYI, all people who have late assignments have been pmed and I hope to hear from them all shortly).

Ah! now I understand. I thought his partner diappeared. In that case, either way works for me. It's up to you Clockwork_Eros.

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to take a moment to let everyone know that the reason I'm asking partners to do the evaluations is because as much as I love you all, I just don't have the time to be doing 50 evaluations a week. :)

I just figured that someone would be wondering about that.... :)

My partner and I have been in touch, and we'll both figure things out, and get started with readings as well. Strangely enough, she went offline, and so did I.. and now we're sorta back. I have my loaner laptop figured out to the point of at least being able to log on, and I can probably arrange to be on messenger with her at some point on the main puter. So, yay us! I'm all caught up on assignments. It's gonna be yucky to have to transfer everything from one drive to the other when I finally get my own puter back, but that's life.

Hi Am, I have just a quick question. You mention you want evaluations every Monday - both myself and my partner have already done our readings. Would it be very inconvenient for you if our evaluations were sent to you early? I wouldn't ask except that I'm really afraid I'll forget if I leave it for a few days... I don't visit MW much and would love to know the assignment's all done and the evaluation sent so I don't have to worry about forgetting it.... But if it is terribly inconvenient for you that is ok, just let me know.

Thank you :)

Ah son of a.... I did not even see the Monday deadline. I went ahead and sent yours in, Rain. My apologies, Am. :fpatricks

I too would be interested in knowing if it would be acceptable if we sent them in before Monday. Unlike Rain I try to visit daily, but my memory is so blah that I'm afraid I may overlook it in the uproar that is my life.

 @ his uproar of a life.

Of course you can send them in before Monday...that's just the deadline. Also, you can do more than one a week, I just want them in by Monday, is all. :)

I'm gonna go clarify that in my description. Thanks for bringing that up.

I just thought of something. I've always read them for people who have been there to shuffle the cards and put their own energies into it. Do you have any advice for those of us who have never read cards for people far away? Do we just try to think of the person, or is there another trick for someone you hardly know and have never met before?

I have another question. Do you want us to just PM you the evaluations, or did you want the reading attached so you could look over it? I'm assuming you just want the evaluation, but I'm just making sure I read right.

Amethyst Rose

Hey, sorry for missing your question today, I didn't get an email notification for it and just didn't notice it, I guess.

In answer to your question, yes you just concentrate on the person you're reading on when they're far away. If you're reading over a chat, you have them concentrate as well. It can be slightly more difficult over email or PM, but I'm not all that concerned about accuracy just yet, (which is why I only made it 2 points). Dont' be concerned about if you if you know them at all or if you're right or wrong, just go with your intuition.

And yes, in an effort to protect reading confidentiality, I just want the evaluation sent to me. Thanks!

I have a question about shuffling the cards. I remember reading somewhere years ago that when you shuffling if one of the cards falls out that you should stop shuffling and use this card as your first card, basically this card is trying to jump out at you:)
Anyways I was wondering what your thoughts were on this?

Amethyst Rose
January 31st, 2005, 12:15 AM
good question. :) Actually, I do believe that the cards tell us when to stop shuffling, so if a card falls out, I stop shuffling and put it on the top of the deck. :)

This happened to me while I was doing my weekly reading for Rainlily. I finished shuffling, then when I went to cut the cards, one of them just kind of jumped out. I took that as that is the card I should use. :)

Mine fell out & i kept shuffling, then more came out. I knew it was a sign. But ultimately I know I pulled the perfect card for my partner.
