I'm curious, in your area (and do you live in a big city, small town, etc.), what are the average prices for a housecleaner/maid/cleaning lady? I'm looking for someone up here to do relatively light cleaning for $10 an hour several hours a week, but it's almost impossible to find and I'm sure not able to afford the $40-50 a maid service calls for. Does $10 an hour seem like a low wage to you? I'm not talking overhauling the house, just mopping/sweeping floors, washing down counters, cleaning the bathroom, dusting...stuff like that.

The lowest price I've ever heard was when my cousin was charging $12 an hour to clean houses. This was 10 years ago...and she was just working for herself. So, to me, $10 an hour seems low. But if you're lucky, you may be able to find someone that does it.

I had someone who did...but she moved...she seemed to think it was okay (it's very light cleaning). LOL, can't afford to pay more and can't afford the time to do it myself. The pits, all right.

Thanks for the input! :)

Yazzy, When I've done housekeeping for someone, I'd either get paid $15.00 an hour, or $15.00 per appliance.
Sometimes someone would just need a stove or frig cleaned.
That was 15 years ago, way down south in dixie.

And I have to tell you, when I get thru with cleaning something, it's clean!

I couldn't be afforded nowadays...

True, my cleaning lady wasn't spotless by any means and for what I could pay, I didn't expect her to be. :)

I live in a high middle class town...We've had a few cleaning ladies that my mom usually ended up being good friends with, so she usually tipped them pretty well....The last cleaning lady we had a few years ago I believe she paid her about $120 dollars for one day of cleaning from about 9am-2pm or so, however long it took her, but she cleaned 9 rooms (including kitchen) and 3 bathrooms...She vaccumed, dusted, washed floors, counters, she was also organize your stuff if it wasnt put away which used to bug me cuz I'd never be able to find anything :aburst: she'd also make mine and my brothers bed when we were younger...
My mom would also pay her an extra 50 bucks to help her fold laundry, like I said they became best friends so it was a bit different...

For what your looking for you need to look in the paper for an independant person, or place an ad looking for someone, probably someone looking for a second job or a college student or someone, 10 bucks an hour is low for my area, but maybe not for yours...I'm sure you can find someone.

Actually, for a professional it is very low here...but I'm looking more for someone who just is looking for a bit of pocket cash--if I could pay more, I'd hire a cleaning service, but can't afford to at this point and simply have no time left in the day to do it myself. Between my husband and I, we get about 70% of what needs to be done, but that's just not enough for me. So I think I'll check out the college boards around here.

I used to get $15 an hour for it. But that was years ago too:p

Put an ad in the paper. In my area, hundreds of people would jump at the chance for a $10 an hour part time job! Heck, if I lived near you I'd do it

See if you could put flyers at a college campus, or call your local high school honor society and see if there are any students looking for part time work.

$10 an hour may not seem like much to some people, but my husband makes $6.50 an hour and at the moment I make nothing at all. There are a LOT of people that are making what we make or less, who would be more than happy to clean for $10 an hour.

LOL...I wish you lived near here too! (Trouble is, we live in a very expensive city...rent is sky high, house prices astronomical, and not many people are willing to work for that...but we aren't on the end of wages yet where we can afford the higher costs). Yeah, I figure light cleaning (and I'm not a slave driver, at least not for that wage) isn't too taxing for 3-4 hours a week. And from what I've heard, the services like Merry Maids don't necessarily do all that great a job either, from a friend who hired them.

I charged 40 dollars..now if it took me two hours or 5 hours to clean the house that's what I got. Usually the first week was a long time. Getting the house clean and establishing a routine.
After that it usually took me 3 hours to clean a house. [3 bedrooms, 2 or 2 1/2 baths, kitchen (wash up a few dishes, vac and mop)] One lady paid me extra to do the sheets and another pd me extra per piece to iron. If they only wanted me bi monthly it would be more.... more to clean up.

If I lived near you I'd do it! Would love to have a little extra spending money.

I would assume you can make good money for it.

I have attached my price sheet... This is what I charge... I live in a small town, but most of my clients are and will be in the outskirts of Charlotte. I am by far the most reasonable out here. Matter of fact, in a month, I may be making changes to my list. I just want to become established before I do anything like that.

Oops, let me fix that... that was an old copy, that I was playing with, and makes no sense LOL... Here is the real one.
