Hi guys,

I know this is rather petty, but please read on.

Today when I tried to re-install windows, my whole computer basically messed up. It won't even let me on the main area where all my files are.

Now, usually I wouldn't be upset, but I have MY LIFE on that computer...school stuff, notes from bfs, pictures...things that have a lot of sentimental value to me, and that can't be replaced. My dad told me that it was "just a machine" and not to worry, but he doesn't realize how much it means to me.

He said that all my files are still there, but when someone comes in to fix the comp, they'll have to delete everything on the harddrive. :(:(:(

I don't know what else to do...please send your energy/prayers...I don't want everything to be lost. :(:(:(

Thanks so much---x0x

Crap,...you're in Canada!! My husband could fix it....he does it all the time for people. Find someone who knows there stuff and can retrieve the files before it's wiped.
Editted to add: It's ALOT of work. Thats why most will not do it. See if you can find someone willing to put in the time, but not charge so much.

Thank you so much for replying!

My dad used to be a computer analyst, and he has a few friends who are pretty good with computers.

Last time my dad got his friend to fix my computer, everything ended up getting wiped out, because there were so many viruses that there wasn't any other way.

The only way that we could really retrieve my stuff, is by putting in windows, saving my stuff, un-installing it, and then re-installing it again. It sounds easy, but I guess it isn't.

I'm just hoping that he could fix it without deleting my stuff...everything means so much to me. I suppose it's a learning lesson for next time, but I wish I would have saved my stuff onto disks earlier!

Thank you so much for offering help too, lol! It means a lot to me.

x0x!!

Data extraction on a good drive really isn't all that difficult (if you know what you're doing). You might want to ask one of your dad's friends to install Windows on a completely separate hard drive, then hook your current drive as a slave and transfer the important stuff. It's also completely possible to do that very same setup and run a complete virus scan on the drive before data transfer begins. I do stuff like this all the time for a living(along with networking junk).

Good luck to you :)

My sister once lost her dissertation, & with it her chance at a PhD, through having no backup (hers was on disk which is the opposite, but it's the same principle). It's not petty.

Glad to hear you were able to save your stuff! My laptop crashed last spring. I learned the hard way to back everything up from then on. I lost the pictures to my son's 5th birthday, forever! :wah:
