Actually, if things continue as they do it (and by 'it' I mean our species, not the Earth since one ending does not necessarily equate the other ending) will end much sooner, in about 3 million years. The moon is moving away from the Earth at about an inch a year (I believe) and when it sufficiently moves far enough away, the Earth will drastically change. If our axis were to change its rotation by 25 degrees or so, deserts could become lakes, lakes deserts, rain forests icelands, the polar ice caps could melt. When the moon moves away from us sufficiently, however, it will move far more than 25 degrees.
So, the Earth is going to drastically change, eventually. We may die out, we may not. My belief is our species will end when someone pushes the wrong button. Could be a nuclear war, could be something else. The point? Idiocy will kill us out, plain and simple, and with as much of it as we have floating around now we could be wiped out tomorrow.
Truthfully, I am not concerned. If we die out, the Earth will continue on most likely. It is not our Earth, we are just leasing it for the time being. Also, who says when we reincarnate we cannot come back as another species, a species that perhaps evolved to survive any climate changes here on this planet? Or perhaps we are reincarnated somewhere else, billions of light years from here, or that we all wait in a spiritual limbo, the Summerland, whatever you wish to call it, until the time is right for physical life to once again be reborn. It has happened throughout the centuries here on this planet. Drastic changes occur and all life for a time is seemingly wiped out, but comes back in a burst of glory eventually only to die out again later. So really, who cares if humans die out or not.
Perhaps we'll come back as something better, or perhaps not. People spend way too much time focusing on the end of the World (which will most likely happen long after we are gone) thinking they are one in the same and it will be utterly dismal. Such is the case with people who become so attached to our physical bodies. It's disturbing.
