Flora is a maiden goddess who comes out of Roman mythology. Springtime is her season and she represents fertility, and sexuality.
I have a little place in my heart for her. She is a very sweet goddess. Playful, and joyous.

She is one I've never seen much on either, mythology-wise. Dio pretty much covered it. Sometimes she gets drafted as a playmate of Kore/Proserpina. I know I've seen her connected to Hebe as a playmate as well... but that right there is questionable as I believe Hebe is greek... so the connection of the names was done by someone crossing cultures.

Flora only had one templum that I know of. It was next to the Circus Maximus and dedicated in 515 AUC (238 BC). But the Floralia, including games, were not made a regular event until 580. Animals were set loose, and if we're to believe Juvenal, this was done to the sound of trumpets blasted by matrons. Afterward the people would all be given lupines. (Don't try this at home, the American variety is POISONOUS!)
The Oscans held that she was married to a fellow named Florus. (How convenient ) To the south of Rome she and other goddesses became blurred into Ferentina - the mater terra (earth mother) of the first Latin League.By the last years of the Republic there were very few educated Romans who believed in the gods anymore. But Flora remained in their hearts for quite some time. Most of them considered themselves country folk exiled to the city. Every peristyle and roof garden was dedicated to her. Ember is right, she was also considered sister to Proserpina.

Flora is so special to me. I've been drawn to minor deities. Many people think of Flora around spring. I, however, have her with me all year round. She reminds me of all the possibilties that can blossom in life. She helps flower good thoughts in my mind and gives me a positive outlook.
That's just me though. Her Greek equivalency is Chloris. Here's some words that Ovid wrote on Flora. Flora Have you seen Botticelli's Primavera? He includes an image of Flora in that painting. Check it out!! BB |
