Your Body is Taboo

I read something in the paper last night that made me laugh. There was an "incident" at a Highschool in which a girl wore a button that stated she loved her vagina. This was bought at a showing of The Vagina Monologues. Apparently the school wants to suspend her or something. This reminds me of when I went to highschool. If you so much as glanced at the opposite sex, let alone show any affection, you would be out the door in the blink of an eye. The school that this incident occured at said that they received complaints from people. I can not help to think that those who registered complaints are children of family members who are still practising some medival form of Christianity. You know the one, where the male is cool "Hey i'm going to heaven no matter what" and the female is the one who has to spend her life making up for her original sin blah blah blah blah. I'm sure the family in question are still using "The Good Wife Guide" (remember that?) to teach their young girls how they are supposed to live. Anywho, i'm getting a bit off topic. What are your opinions on this? Is this freedom of speech? Do kids under 18 not qualify for the first ammendment right? Should sex and/or personal body references be taboo?

I love my vagina too.. I mean.. ummm err.. Yeah maybe she shouldn't wear that to school. I could see a school telling her to put it away or something but nothing major like suspension

I don't see what the problem is. Granted, i realize that high schools can be EXTREMELY picky as to what they do and don't allow (ie my high school banned black hoodies). But come on, a vagina's a vagina!! It's like not being able to say "arm" or "foot". Have we all forgotten sex-ed??

I actually do not remember having sex-ed in my school. I wouln't be suprised if that was banned for being "inappropriate." I learned all I know about sex by "street talk" in elementary school. Ahh, good 'ol public school systems!

I personally do not feel that it should be banned. But then again, hats were banned in my highschool.

I think when our generation become teachers things like sexual parts will be a little more talked about .. even if its on a pin. Some people are old fashioned

I love my vagina too! I love vaginas in general. Penises too, they're all great, really!

People need to get out of this PC crap about the human body. We are animals that have reproductive organs. We piss, we crap, and we have sex. That is what we were built for. Anything else that has come of human bodies is purely coincidental. All of this "No talking about one's private parts" is BS. People should love their reproductive organs and learn to appreciate them, not be taught that they're shameful and dirty.

The first thing I thought of is it does take away from her freedom of speech, however you are not guarenteed free speach everywhere. You would be fired from many jobs for wearing such buttons to work. Also might I add that if they allowed that then a guy would have the right to wear a shirt saying "I have the penis so I make the rules". It would be argued that it was no less offensive than a pin saying "I love my vagina"

There is a difference. One takes a job voluntarily, knowing ahead of time what the restrictions are. If you don't like them, you can work somewhere else. Schoolkids, on the other hand, are forced by the law to attend school and in with few exceptions do NOT get to choose which school they will attend.

Unless a behavior or expression is harmful or is truly disruptive (as opposed to "offensive" to a few hypersensitive whiners) the kids should be left alone.

No your body and sexuality shouldn't be taboo, and school dress codes and violations need major updates.

I agree, that your body and sexuality shouldn't be taboo. I also believe school is meant to prepare you for real life. In the real world there are times and places where your freedoms are restricted for many reasons. Also as mentioned many times above, if you allowed that button you would have to allow many things that are less appropriate
