  • Where do you buy lye

So, since it's so hard to find anywhere, I've got to order it online. While I've found some good prices, the shipping is outrageous. Where do you buy yours?

Never made soap and never will, but a quick web search turned up http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/co...lyesources.htm

This not only lissts sources for purchasing lye but a forum specifically for candle and soap makers where you could get tons of information.

Please be extremely careful when working with Lye, it will burn your skin.

Um, yup. Lots of things that are kept in household will cause harm to people. You know, I wasn't planning on soaking my flesh in it... but thanks, I guess? I've been working with lye for years.

You should be able to get lye in any good independent hardware store. It's often used as a drain opener. The box stores might not carry it, but I know True Value does.

Fantastic! I'll have to wander around town and see if I can find a hardware store... I didn't know if they still sold it or not. Thanks.

I get mine at either Ace hardware (they often have the red devil brand) or I can get it in the plumbing section at Lowes (it is in a yellow container whose brand name I forget).
