  • Jedism

After being brought up on another thread I got to thinking...

The Force philosophy makes a lot of sense to me.
"The force is an energy field created by all living things, it surrounds us, it penetrates us, it binds the galaxy together" Obi-Wan to Luke (A New Hope)
As some of you know, Jedism is actully a reconized religion. (See article)

I've heard people say its very close to Taoism.

    Some more good links;

    Jediism.org
    Beliefnet article
Article -Jedi Religion choice for 20,000 Canadians
    The Jedi Creed

I would love to hear some thoughts and opinions on this.

"Concentrate. Feel the Force flow. Not outside or inside, but part of all it is. Through the Force, things you will see. Reaches across time and space it does. Other places. The future... the past. Old friends long gone. Always in motion is the future. Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? And well you should not. For my ally is the Force. And a powerful ally it is. Life it creates, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we... not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you. Here, between you... me... the tree... the rock... everywhere! In balance is the Force. The Dark and the Light. With out one, there is no other. The Dark Side, tempting it is. Quick, easy at first, but a trap is the Dark Side. Corrupting, evil. Once you start down the Dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. For the Light Side, patience you need. Control. Peace and harmony it is."

I think it definitely shares a lot of elements with Taosim. With the recent movies' focus on the Anakin character, I see it more: the trap of falling prey to attachment and ego, allowing emotions to control you. I've never seen a statement from George Lucas that was specific about where he may have gotten the idea for the Force, but it certainly seems a lot like the Tao to me.

        From the article:

Pastor Alex Garcia of Mount Franklin Baptist Church is skeptical about an upstart faith that doesn't find its roots in an ancient text like the Bible but found its beginnings just over two decades ago on celluloid.

Now this I don't agree with. The message is what matters, not the messenger.

To expect the worst is to never have an unpleasant surprise.

Men often mistake the strength of their emotion for the strength of their argument.

The heated mind resents the chill touch and relentless scrutiny of logic.

Why not? :D Text, film - it's just a medium. For some Star Wars is modern mythology. I say more power to 'em.

Chaotes seem to do fine ala cthulhu mythos. This is not a new concept.

right then, i'm off to start 'Jonesism'. anybody want to join my Temple of doom?

some people are like slinkies -
not good for anything, but they bring a smile to your face when they are pushed downs the stairs.

True enlightenment comes from discovering principles which challenge your spiritual view, not from inventing principles to confirm it.
