  • the Urantia Book

    Is anyone here familiar with the Urantia Book? (How did you come across it?) I'm not entirely sure what to make of it, but it's definitely thought-provoking.

    It's in four parts;

    I. The Central and Superuniverses
    II. The Local Universe
    III. The History of Urantia [note: that's Earth]
    IV. The Life and Teachings of Jesus

    Reading it is dry, slow going in places. Some of it is vamiliar, some ideas new to me. The mysteries are intrigueing: Who wrote it? No author is credited. What's the motivation for publishing it? Not personal fame or power or someone would have their name publicized; not as a get-rich plan, the book isn't expensive enough for that, and it doesn't suggest you send money anywhere; not as a means of building up a group of believers under someone's authority, you're not asked to join anything...

    The entire 2000+ page manuscript is on-line, I'll add a link if I have time to find it, otherwise google "urantia book" and it won't be hard to find.

    It is biblical in nature. I have a copy of it, however I can never manage to get past the first for pages before falling asleep from boredom. I do know there is some controversy about the new published edition because it wasn't the 'true' Urantia group that published it.

      I too have a copy. Aquired it at "barnes and Noble", I believe. You gotta be nuts if you think Ive read it cover to cover, but I might try. There are some very...interesting...things to be found in there.

      To expect the worst is to never have an unpleasant surprise.

      Men often mistake the strength of their emotion for the strength of their argument.

      The heated mind resents the chill touch and relentless scrutiny of logic.

        The Urantia book is mentioned on the web in a few places.... including at http://www.ubfellowship.org/ which is a group devoted to studying this book. They appear to have the book available online as well for those who haven't seen it and want a look.

        http://www.urantia.org/ is the "official" site of the Urantia Foundation.

        The Urantia book is also described at http://www.religioustolerance.org/urantia.htm where its origins are discussed. Basically, it sounds like it was "channelled" purportedly from extraterrestrials or "higher beings" of some sort.

        For a very skeptical discussion of the Urantia book and its origins, check out http://skepdic.com/urantia.html

            Did you check out that skepdic.com entry yet? I find it interesting too that there is a possible connection with that Kellogg guy. You know, the one who started the whole breakfast cereal empire.
