  • Lions and Tigers and Demons! Oh My!

Rain and I got into a discussion in the Dark Paganism thread in New Pagans about demons, and I wanted to hear some other opinions on it so I thought I'd post something here.

The basic question is: Do you believe in demons?
If so, elaborate if you'd like, where you think they exist, what you think they are, anything else you feel like contributing.

For myself...*shrugs* I don't believe in them. I have a hard enough time believing in the Gods on a good day to put forth much energy into believing in demons and creepy crawlies as well. But I am interested to hear what everyone else thinks on the subject, as Phoenix told me last night that he has seen people be "possesed" by demons or entities before and he does believe in them.

Who knows, maybe I would have to have a first hand witnessing of it before I'll believe it. *Grins and shrugs*
    Oh Noz Oppression!
Because life is so much more exciting when you're being persecuted.

Your - the possessive form of you

    You're - a contraction of "you are"

I can't say I personally believe in demons, at least not in a "angels=good, demons=bad" context. Guess I better check out that thread so I know just what I'm responding to!

OK. Same answer. I believe in lions and tigers, but not in demons.

I don't believe in demons as evil dudes in red jumpsuits who come out of the ether to do mean things and reak havoc.

However, I do believe that in energy field that pervades the universe, there are wells of negative energy that can manifest on the physical plane in a number of ways. If people choose to call these demons, that's fine with me. (And, from what little reading I've done, I believe that my definition is basically how the Enochians of the 15th century [John Dee, Ned Kelly, etc.] viewed demons.)

I do believe in demons but not as 'evil' or 'good'. the soul evolves and grows and changes continuously throughout it's lifetime, eventually the soul reaches a state were it can nolonger be qualified as a soul or a spirit or a living being but than by reason of elimination it becomes a 'demon'. There are many different types of 'demons' in so much as no two beings are entirely alike. And to your lions and tigers statement, Once mine believed that the highest state a man could achieve was to become a 'demon' jaguar. It was a right of passage beyond humanity.

I tend to think of demons as negative somewhat but functional. I don't think that they are monsters, more like data streams programmed with certain vibrations. Wild energy...yes I do think they can be invoked the same as I think we can harness any type of energy, electricity for example.

I do very much so believe in demons, but not as the stereotype that they have become. In my own opinion, I do feel that demons are beings existing in this world as spirits of a sort and are neither “good” nor “evil”. They are creatures who inhabit this earth as same as we and occasionally interact with us by choice or whim.

I feel that they can be caring beings or mischievous, with emotional levels similar to ours. My lover feels they have always been here, coming and leaving as they wish, for all of our existence here, having no relationship with the human soul, in which I mean that they are not former humans in any way.

But that is just my two cents. :deviltail

Agreeing. I'll call them demons as much as I call bouts of positive energy angels.

Couldn't the spirit of a malicious, sentient being be considered a demon? For example, if I'm really hateful, cruel, and evil, and I die, wouldn't my spirit be considered a demon if it sticks around on some plane and causes trouble?

                    I'd consider that a demon.
