  • Cross Cultural Similarities

I've had a chance to both study and had the privelege of being part of several shamanic ceremonies recently and over the past few years. What always strikes me is how animist societies often have many similarities, though also many culturally specific traits. From the Yukaghir in far northern Asia, to the Sami peoples of Scandinavia to Native American religions and traditions... there seemed to have been many baseline similarities that Neo-Shamans draw on for inspiration.

So, discussion! What common similarities have you noticed and what fundamental character do they have? What is the purpose and power of culturally specific activities and practices?

The main I noticed is that it's initiatory and in order for one to be initiated, one must undergo shamanic sickness. The symptoms differ, naturally, across the continents and regions - but the general synopsis is that your life is going to be really shitty.
